s claims. for. 271-89) This invention relates to a iloat to be applied to the jogger4 of a printing press and itis an `object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which provides a box having a wall constructed to allow escape of air to facilitate even drop of the printed matter from the delivery end ofa press into the box.V
'It is also an object of the invention to provide `a. device of this kind wherein the escape of air from the box formed thereby may be varied or adjusted to accommodate the different weights of paper used in the printing process.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved spray float whereby certain important advantages are attained,l as will be hereinafter more fully set In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with'reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View in top plan illustrating a float constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position upon a Jogger;

Interposed between the bars or rails 2 and 3 Each of these boards I is provided with a rearwardly disposed arm c "which is adjustably connected, as at d, with a forwardly directed arm 'ne carried by the adjacent member A. This particular mounting for each of the side boards allows the same to be adjusted withinV certain limits with respect to the opposed side board. The jogger mechanism in its operation or detailed construction forms no particular part `of my invention other than as a supporting means for the float, as particularly illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawing.This oat in'itsassembly is supported by the side boards I and the members or rails 2 and 3 of the jogger mechanism and the float embodies a structure to allowthe same to be readily adjusted in accordance with the size of the paper used inthe printing process, and as delivered `from the printingpress. this oir-set portion 5 extending from -end to end of the plate 4 and being disposed on an upward and outward predetermined angle. The plate 4 is of considerable length and has its upper mar ginal portion defined by an outwardly disposed flange 6 at right anglesto the portion a ofthe plate 4. The outer longitudinal marginal portion of the flange 6 isdened by aidependng flange 1, this ilange` 1 co-acting with the adjacent portion a of theplate to provide a downwardly facing groove 8 in-which is snugly received the upper end portions of the upstanding posts 9 carried by the member or rail 3. `The upper Vportion a of the plate hasldirect contactwith these posts ,9,l thereby assuring the plate, 4 to be effectively suspended in desired working position.
The oat also comprises an elongated Yback plate I0 of a length substantially izo-extensive in length with the plate 4. This plate I0 is also of a heighth approximately the same as the heighth oi the portion of the plate 4 below the oiset portion 5 thereof. `The upper marginal portion of theplate II) has disposed therealong the outwardly directed' and perpendicularly related flange iI. The outer longitudinal margin ci this iiange II is provided therealong with a depending iiange I2. This flange I2 coacts with the upper portion of the plate II) to provide a i groove or channel I4 to receive the upper portions of the posts, one of which being shown at I5 in Figure 3, carried by the member or rail 2 at desired points spaced therealong. By this means the plate IIJ is suspended in desired position. The lower portion of the plate I is provided therealong and adjacent to its bottom edge with a plurality of outstanding anges I6, the outer portions of` which being returned, as at II, whereby are provided guide grooves I8 for the outstanding flanges I 9 carried by the'lower marginal portion of a slide '20; This slide 20 has close contact with the outer face of the plate IU and is provided at its upper margin with an out-j wardly disposed ange 2| which closely contacts from below with the flange II of the plate I0,
as is clearly illustrated in Figure 3. This flange` 2| also has close contact with the ilange I21. It will, therefore, be noted that tlie slide'20 is'effectively maintained in position with respectto the plate I0, yet free to have endwise sliding movementalong said platen). Y
The slide 20 is ofasubstantlal length andis provided therealong with the longitudinally 'spacedopenings 22, these openings 22 in the present'ernbodiment ofthe invention being relatively large and being adapted to be brought into full or 4partial Yregister with the openings V23 provided in thevplateID. The openings 23 are spaced apart to the same extent as the openings 22.
`Thegside membersof the 'float each comprises twosections v24 Vand 25, the upper marginal portions of these'sections being provided therealong with the outwardly disposed anges 26` terminating inthe depending flanges 21. The flange 25 of one o f the AsectionsA is of a greater width than the iiangei'of its associated section to allow the angesf26 andn2'l of one section,fas '24, to telescopically-:engage'within the vchannel formed by the ilanges 26 and Y21 o f the lsecond section 25.
"Itwill, therefore, be jobvious that the sections 24 f and 25 may-beadjusted endwise one with respect to the other. It is also believed to be` pointed out that the 'anges'26 of lthe sections Vofthe side members engage from above the side members I of the jogger mechanism and are thereby eifectively suspended in desired position.
Y'to ybe readily apparentV that the side sections of the float may be readily adjusted one toward the `oth-enas may alsov be the plates II and I0 so rthat `the iioatwil'l have the same requisite adjustment as the jogger mechanism,` as determined by the size of the printedsheetsdeliveredfrom the press.
`Iltis also believed to be obvious that as the sheets drop upon the ,pile and rwithin Vthe oat the 'requisite ,positioning of the sheets w'illbe facili- 'tatedlbycontact of the rear margins of the sheets with the oiT-set portion of the rear plate 4.
.As the .sheet drops within the iioat the air therebeneath will allow the sheet to drop even. The. openings 22 permit escape of air under the v.paper as it 4falls and thereby :permits the paper to ral] faster-in the Vback or rear lportion of the iloat `oni-account -of the lowering of the air resistance as the air escapes out through such openings.
@ne end por-tion of the slide 2G is provided with an outstanding bracket 29 `to provide means to facilitate the :desired moving .of the slide 20.
.From the foregoing description it is thought -to "mechanism, a front plate, channel means for engagement over and along the front bar of the jogger mechanism, side plates, means carried by the side plates for supporting the same upon the side boards of the jogger mechanism between the front and rear plates of the float, one of the plates being provided with air openings, and means for regulating the flow through said openings.

A float for usein connection with the joggel' :mechanism of a printing press, including-front and rear bars carried by the operating members, and side boards carried by said members; said iloat comprising a rear plate having a portion of its top edge formed to provide a. downwardly opening channel for engagement over and along the rear bar of the jogger mechanism for the hanging support of the plate, a front plate having a portion of its top edge formed to provide a downwardly opening channel adapted for engagement over and along the front bar of the jogger mechanism for the hanging support of the iront plate, side plates connected between the front and rear plates, means forming a part of the side plates for the engagement of the same with and the support of the same from the side boards of the jogger mechanism, one of said iirst mentioned plates having air openings therein, means forming a guide longitudinally of the outer face of the said one of the first mentioned plates beneath the air openings, and a side plate having openings corresponding With the openings of the said one of the rst mentioned plates and positioned against the outer side of the said one of the first mentioned plates between the guide ilangerand channel, the slide having outwardly extending longitudinal edge portions one of which is slidably engaged in the adjacent channel and the other of which is slidably engaged in the guide means.
6. A float as described in claim 5, in which said side plates are each formed in two sections telescopically joined together, the top portion of each of the two sections of each side plate being formed to provide a longitudinal downwardly opening channel for the reception of the top edge of a side board.
