Abstract
491,395. Printing - machines. GOSS FOSTER, Ltd. April 19, 1937, No. 11154. Convention date, May 19, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In a rotary intaglio printing-press of the type wherein a design cylinder is mounted within a substantially enclosed ink housing and provided with means for supplying ink to the cylinder, an auxiliary ink trough is disposed within the housing adjacent the lower part of the cylinder, and is so mounted that its position with respect to the axis of the cylinder may be varied in order to regulate or adjust the depth of immersion of the cylinder in the ink within the trough, and also to allow maintenance of a free space between the trough and cylinders of various sizes. As shown, a curved auxiliary ink trough 12 has two flat ends, is formed with a horizontal pivot mounting along one side edge for pivoting about the ink supply pipe 31, and its opposite side edge is used as a spillage edge 15 for the ink in the trough. Pins 20, 21 and 22 mounted at each end of the trough 12 can be engaged by notches in arms 24 pivoted at 25 to the machine frame, whereby the position of the trough can be varied. The supply pipe 31 has provided in the horizontal portion forming the support for the trough an ink ejecting slot or a series of orifices 32 positioned to project a sheet of ink against the design cylinder 1. The ink is projected against that side of the cylinder that emerges from the ink in the trough, and on the same walls 35, 36 supporting an ink strainer 37, and formed with an inclined base 39 having an outlet pipe 41 which conveys the excess ink to a circulating pump 42 adapted to return the ink to the pipe 31. A splash plate 44 is mounted on the side wall 35 and serves as a partial enclosure for the cylinder 1. The doctor-blade mechanism may be as described in Specification 490,540.
