The present invention relates to a shaving device in which the operating motor is enclosed within the handle.
The invention relates particularly to such devices where a shaving blade of conventional rectangular form-is moved toA and fro between holding and protecting elements and with its cutting edge in direct contact with the skin. The cutting edge of the blade slides upon a stationary supporting plate provided with cutting edges formed by holes and recesses having sharp edges in the path of the blade, saidholes and recesses acting as yretaining means for the hair extended into said holes or recesses, so that the hair is caught and cut by the cutting edges of the blade and said holes and recesses and so that also the portions of the skin carrying said hair are held fast by said holes and recesses during the cutting of the hair.
A further object of the vinvention is to have a shaving device where the blade is moved at an acute angle with regard to the supporting plate so that it alternately overlaps and uncovers the holes and gives to the hair freel access while the cut hair falls outside of the head.
Another object of the invention isa shaving device where the shaving blade can be axially displaced with its operating device and is pressed resiliently upon the supporting plate all with the aim'to secure the tight contact between the cut- .f ting edges of the blade and the edges ofI the holes and recesses and to permit the removal of the blade from the plate.
Still another object of the invention is the combination of the shaving device with a hair cutting device all in the same tool and to have the hair cutting blade moved either parallel to a hair cutting comb or at an acute angle.v
The present device may be used for wet or dry shaving while using soap or cream.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts. According to theFigs. 1 to 7 the shaving device designated at B is removably attached tok a hollow head A. The lower portion of the head A, as shown in Fig. 7', is provided with two spaced and externally threaded extensions'E of segmental form which are screwed into the internal threads of the handle C'and two screws El-support the motor D in position with respect to the extensions E. Between the electric motor D and the .inside walls of handle Cja free space F is left permitting the circulation of 'the air for cooling` of the stator. The pins 9, I9 and I I are cylindrical and are fast in the slide I2 and being engaged in holes in the blade 1, impart movement thereto. At the under surface of the slide a pin I5 is fixed to which is hinged the one end of the connecting rod I6 the other end of which engages a crank pin I1 xed to the gear wheel I8. Gear wheel I8 is mounted to rotate on a stationary pin I9 within the head A. This wheel meshes with the pinion 2| xed to the motor shaft 29. Motor shaft is supported in the lower end of the stator and in the bearing 22.
In a modified form (see Fig. 2b) the plate Ia is at on its upper surface and the flexible razorblade 1a is transversely curved. The blade placed on the plate I is bent approximately flat by the pins 28 of the cover 23, when the cover is placed on the head. The cutting edges of the razor-blade may be either straight or toothed.
The shaving blade 1 is protected by the cover 23 which is clamped by means of two clips 25 to two lugs 24 formed on the head A. The cover 23 is provided with two notches 26 receiving the ears 21 extended at both ends from plate I, so that the covermaintains always the same spacing from blade 1 and plate I. The pins 28 of the cover are extended between the pins 9, I0 and II and bear upon blade 'I to press it against plate I bending the blade resiliently downwards s0 that the cutting edges of the blade are in tight contact with the outer edges of the holes 6 of plate I. Laterally of the head A an ejector rotatably mounted Which is composed of a medial portion 3l] pivoted in the head and terminal lever arms and 3I. The lever arm 3I lies underneath blade1 so that after the removal of cover 23 and the swinging of lever 29, the blade 1 will be lifted off to be changed if need be. When the motor is started the device is held with the coverin tight contact over the skin to be shaved and the hairs will project into the holes 6 and will be shaved off by the cutting edge of the blade while the respective portion of the skin is held fast.
The rows of holes 6 are disposed on both sides of head A and beyond the exterior surface of the latter so that the hairs cut-oi are discharged from the holes without obstructing the same. This arrangement permits the using of the tool not only for dry shaving but also in connection with soap or cream. In the latter case the straight protecting edges of the plate I strip 01T the soap lather from the edge of the blade and only very little can penetrate into the inside of the tool.
Instead of a slide as shown in Figs. l to 3, a second form of slidable motor driven plate 32 might be provided underneath the stationary plate I as shown in Figs. 4 to 6, the slidable plate being guided in slots 33 disposed at an acute angle with respect to the middle line of the head A by means of the bolts 2 used for fastening plate I. To the upper surface of plate 32 pins 9b, IIJb,
IIb are xed, which serve for transmitting thev movement to the shaving blade 1. On the under side of plate 32 a screw I5 connects one end of the connecting-rod I6 with the slidable plate 32. The other end of the connecting-rod is attached to the pin I1 which imparts a reciprocating movement to plate 32 when the motor is started. The edges 32a of plate 32 are cham fered on the upper side to deflect the cut hair discharged from the holes 6. Rollers 34 provided underneath plate 32 are pressed upwards by the helical springs 36 and sleeves 35 engaging the upper ends of the springs. The lower ends of the springs are engaged by pins 31 which bear against the cams 38 of the regulating ring 39 provided with two diametrically opposed handles 40 projecting through slots G by which said ring may be adjusted for regulating the tension of the springs 36. Thereby the pressure upon the rollers 34 may be increased or lessened and the slidable plate 32 may be pressed more or less, against plate I. If the pressure is increased the frictional contact between the plates I and 32 is increased and the speed of the tool is lessened, whilst the speed will be increased if the pressure vis lessened. Thus the speed of the tool may be regulated by operating the regulating ring 39.
The slidable plate 32 carries also a downturned part with a threaded hole 4I into which may be screwed a massage member or other like member so that the tool may also be used for slight massaging. A fan 42 iixed to the motor shaft 29 is intended for circulating air and cooling the motor. Plate I (see Fig. 5a) as in the first embodiment is hollowed at its center portion so as to effect the contact of the shaving blade only between its cutting edge and the plate edges. In a modied form (see Fig. 5b) the plate I is plane and the blade 1 curved. 'Ihe blade is bent flat when the cover is placed in position.
The cover 23 protecting the blade presses the blade by means of the pin 28 resiliently downwards and effects the good contact between cutting edges and plate I. After the removal of cover1 23 the shaving blade may be ejected by swinging lever 29 as in the form of invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3.
Figures 8 to 11 show another embodiment consisting of a combination of the shaving tool with a hair cutting device. To this end one side of plate I is provided with cutting teeth 43 and the corresponding side of the slidable motor driven plate underneath said stationary plate I is provided with teeth 44. Both rows of teeth cooperate during hair cutting. The other side of the stationary plate is provided with holes 6 as above described. .The plate I is hollowed (see Fig. 9a) for a flat blade or iiat (see Fig. 9b) for a curved blade.
The slidable motor driven plate may, according to Fig.- 10, be made in two parts 45 and 5I. The part 45 serving as shearing plate is provided with two slots 46 parallel to the row of teeth, plate 45 being guided on bolts 2 in a direction parallel to said slots. A screw 41 with a resilient disk screwed to plate I serves for pressing plate 45 against teeth 43 of the stationary plate. On the side opposite the shearing teeth 44 two noses 48, 49 are formed. The nose 49 is connected with the connecting rod I6 transmitting the movement of crank pin I1 to the slidable plate 45, the rod I6 being located below the part 45. The nose 48 is connected with the member 5I by a connecting link 50 and transmits the to and fro movement to this member, the link A59 being located above the member 45. The other part 5I of the motor driven plate is guided on pins 2 by the slots 52 disposed at an acute angle with respect to the axis of. the plate part. These -slots eiect the displacement ofv the shaving blade obliquely and lengthwise during the reciprocating movement of the part 5I. The three pins 9, ID and II serve for transmitting the movement of the parti! tothe shaving blade 1, saidpins-projecting upwardly through the longitudinal opening 8, inthe stationary plate and areengaged in the holesof the shaving blade 'I from underneath. The outer edge 32a vof the guide `member 5I is chamfered on the upper side downwards. An extensionwith a threaded hole 4I permits the attachmentA of a massage member or the like to the part 5I.

Slots 52 serve as'guides and `engage the bolts 2 ofthe stationaryr .plate I, said slots being arranged fat an acute` angle with respect to the middleline of head A whereby during the reciprocating movement of vthe part 32e, it' together with the blade 1 will be displaced on the stationary plate I andthe row of holes 6in an. oblique direction. By turning the regulating: ring 39 and camsl by means vof handles 40. therollers 34 may be pressed more yor less against theV stationary plate and thereby the speed of the tool may be regulated. 'Il'iecover 23 ,protects the blade'l and bends this blade by means of the pins 28 towards plate I to bring the cutting edges of the blade into close contact with the edges of holes 6. In the various embodiments described gears I8 and 2| have been provided between motor shaft 2B and the connecting rod I6 of the tool so that the speed of the tool may be changed by varying the gear ratio, but it will be understood that the crank pin operating the connecting rod may be attached directly to the motor shaft.
The usual rectangular shaving blade now in extensive use may be used in the improved razor as well as blades provided with small teeth.
Since the constructive part of the tool such as shown may be changed so long as this is done without departing from the scope of the invention claimed it is understood that the embodiments represented in the annexed drawings are to be considered only as examples.
What I claim is:
l. In a shaving device, a stationary plate having a skin contacting surface and cavities presenting cutting edges at said surface of the plate, a reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface of the stationary plate, means for reciprocating the razor blade, and means for maintaining the razor blade in close contact with said surface of the stationary plate.
2. In a shaving device, a stationary head having a skin contacting surface and a handle secured thereto, a stationary plate having a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at said surface of the plate, said plate being mounted on said head, a
reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface,
and means for maintaining said razor blade in close contact with said surface.
3. In a shaving device, a stationary blade having a skin contacting surface and a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at said surface of the blade, a reciprocating rectangular razor blade overlying said plate and movable across said surface and said cutting edges, means for reciprocating the razor blade, a cover arranged over said razor blade and stationary plate, members carried by said cover for maintaining-the edges of the razor blade in close contact with the surface of the stationary plate.

In a shaving deviceg'f-all stationary-platefha-v ing a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at one surface of said plate, a perforated reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface, a slide with guides inclined to the edge of said blade, vertical pins on said slide operably engaging the perforations in the razor blade, a motor shaft, a crank and connecting rod between the shaft and slide for reciprocating the razor blade, a cover clamped resiliently on said plate, a disc on said shaft, a flat spring frictionally engaging said disc, a manually rotatable ring, downwardly directed cams on said ring cooperating with said flat spring to vary frictional contact with said disc, the spring being adapted to be beni-I by said cams.
7. In a shaving device, a stationary plate having a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at one surface of said plate, a perforated reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface, a movable plate with slots inclined with respect to the edge of said blade, guide bolts on said stationary plate engaging said slots, vertical pins on said movable plate operably engaging the perforations in the razor blade, a motor shaft, a crank and connecting rod between said shaft and said slide for reciprocating the razor blade, a manually rotatable ring, a disc on said shaft, a flat spring frictionally engaging said disc, cams on said ring cooperating with said spring to vary frictional contact with said disc, the spring being adapted to be bent by said cams.
8. A shaving device according to claim 7, wherein the plate is concave and the reciprocating razor blade is provided with toothed edges overlying said surface of the stationary plate.
9. A shaving device according to claim 7, Wherein the plate is fiat and said blade is curved.
10. In a shaving and hair cutting device, a stationary plate having a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at one surface of the plate and teeth on another edge of said plate, a reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface, a reciprocating toothed plate carrying said razor blade and underlying said stationary plate, means for reciprocating the movable plate and the razor blade, and
ymeans rfor maintaining the razor blade in close contact with said surface and the teeth of the movable plate in close contact with the teeth of the stationary plate.

In a shaving and hair cutting device, a stationary plate having a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at one surface of the plate and teeth on another edge ofA said plate, a reciprocating razor blade overlying said surface, a reciprocating toothed movable plate with inclined guide slots arranged on the underside of the 'stationary plate, vertical pins on said movable plate for carrying the razor blade, a crank and connecting rod and a motor for reciprocating the movable plate and the razor blade, a cover arranged over said stationary plate, pins on said cover for maintI ining the edges of the razor blade in close conact with said surface, a rotary manually operted ring, upwardly directed cams on said ring, spring pressed rollers for adjustably pressing the movable plate against the stationary plate, and means coactng with said cams for varying the spring pressure exerted on said rollers.
12. A shaving and hair cutting device according to claim 10, wherein the stationary plate is concave and said blade is flat.
13. A shaving and hair cutting device accord# ing to claim l1, wherein said stationary plate is flat and said blade is curved.
14. In a shaving and hair cutting device, a stationary plate having a skin engaging edge and cavities lying inside said edge presenting cutting edges at one surface of said plate and teeth on another edge of said plate, a reciprocating blade overlying said surface, two plates slidably arranged on the underside of the stationary plate, teeth on one of the slidable plates in close contact with the teeth of the stationary plate, carrying pins on the other slidable plate engaging the razor blade, guides on the stationary plate for the two slidable plates, a link connecting the two slidable plates, a motor driven crank for reciprocating the two slidable plates and the razor blade, a cover arranged over said stationary plate, means for maintaining the edges of the razor blade in close contact with said surface of the stationary plate, a manually operable ring, cams on said ring, rollers for adjustably pressing the two slidable plates against the stationary plate, and pressure applying means for said rollers controlled by said cams.
