Application September 20, 1943, Serial No. 503,140
2 Claims.
My invention relates to the removal of paint, putty and the like from window panes and other structures, and has among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved scraper utilizing ordinary razor blades for cutting purposes.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a face view.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is a bottom view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, I make use of a handle I0 to which is connected a ferrule I2 which supports a scraper head I4. The head I4 includes a plate I6 having tapered side flanges I8 'and a rear wall Welded to the side walls and the plate, A razor blade 22 lies flatwise against a face 24 constituting an edge margin of the plate I6 and lying at right angles to the axis of the handle. Lugs 26 are attached to the plate I6 and extend through the usual opening 28 in the blade 22. These lugs are arranged in spaced parallel relationship with the face 24 for coaction with a blade latching bar 30 having openings 32 for reception of the lugs 26 and webs 34 insertable underneath the lugs 26 to hold the blade against the face 24.
In the position of Figure 5, one cutting edge of the blade 22 extends beyond the adjacent edge of the plate I 6.
A shaft 36 is carried by the flanges I8 to which shaft is pivotally connected a cover 38 coacting with the flanges I8 and 20 and the plate I6 to provide a receptacle for scrapngs removed by the blade 22. The cover 38 is provided with side flanges 48 provided with slots 42 through which the ends of the shaft 36 are extended and upset, as at 44. A spring 46 is coiled about the shaft 36 and coacts with the plate I6 and the cover 38 to yieldingly hold the latter in the position of Figure 5. A lip 48 is formed on the cover 38 to be readily accessible by the thumb of the hand grasping the handle I0.
Along the forward edge of the cover 38 is provided a flange 50 constituting a protective covering for the cutting edge of the blade 22. Lugs 52 are formed on the flanges 40 to engage the work and lift the cover 38 to expose the cutting edge of the blade for scraping purposes. A curved flange 54 is formed along one edge of the latch bar 30 to constitute a guard for the OPPO- site edge of the blade 22. I
The cover 38 may be latched in a retracted position by pivoting the cover upwardly and shifting it rearwardly to bring the lug 56 thereon in the rear of the wall 20, at which time the cutting edge of the blade 22 is exposed to function as an ordinary cutting blade.
In operation, the cover 38 is in the position of Figure 5. Slight pressure against the work elevates the cover 38 a short distance so that the material removed by the blade 22 may pass into the chamber 58 of the head. Thus all the scrapings are collected in the chamber, With the cover 38 in the position of Figure 5, the instrument may be carried in a tool chest without damage to the cutting edge of the razor blade. At the same time, the two edges of the blade 22 are protected to prevent accidental cutting of the hand. A slight pressure of the head I4 against the work exposes the cutting edge of the blade, and the lugs 52 are curved so as to slide freely on the work. Tension springs 88 are attached to the cover 38 and the wall 20 to yieldingly hold the cover 38 in its forward position of Figure 5.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain my invention, that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.
I claim:
1. A scraper of the type described comprising a grip, a receptacle attached to the grip, said receptacle including means for detachably securing a razor blade thereto with said receptacle having a mouth arranged in receiving relationship with one cutting edge of the razor blade, a work engaging cover yieldingly biased to a closed position for covering the cutting edge of the blade but being movable to a cutting edge exposing position through engagement with work being scraped, and means for latching said cover in a position exposing the cutting edge of the blade.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate having upturned flanges at the side and rear edges, said plate having a downwardly facing blade engaging surface at the underside and along the front marginal portion, a bar detachably connected with said surface for holding a blade thereagainst, the cover mounted on the flanged plate and having its rear end pivotally connected with the rear end of the plate, said cover having a downturned flange at its forward end, means resiliently holding the cover in closed position on the plate with the front flanged portion of the cover overhanging and covering the front edge of the blade. and a handle connected to said plate.
