8 Claims. (Cl. 229-16) The invention relates to cartons used as receptacles for various goods. Preferably, the carton will be made of some such material as cardboard or the like, which comes in sheet form. A blank will be cut from the sheet and then bent and folded into proper form to makethe carton or receptacle.
The invention contemplates a neat-looking, relatively sturdy carton which may be especially useful as a container for jars and the like of cosmetics, although it may be used for any material.
In the accompanying drawings showing a specific form of the invention, Figure l is a plan view of a blank from which the carton may be made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed carton with the cover partly opened. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken from side to side with the cover closed. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken from front to back of the completed carton with the cover partly opened. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are on scales larger than Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1 the blank from which the carton is to be formed is shown as a single sheet of cardboard or other material. The 'solid lines of the drawings show lines on which cuts are made. The dotand-dash lines show lines on which folds are made and these may be scored or otherwise prepared for easy and accurate folding.
In forming the carton, the section l will form the main outside front wall of the carton. The section II is folded inwardl at right angles to .the section l0 to form a front top wall. The
section I2 is folded downwardly at right angles to the section H- to form an inner front wall. Section I3 is folded outwardly at right angles to the section I 2 to form a brace for the wall l2. The section i4 forms the outer left wall of the carton. The section I5 is folded inwardly at right angles to the section M to form the upper side wall. The section [6 is folded downwardly at right angles to the section l5 to form the inner side wall. The section I1 is folded outwardly at right angles to the section Hi to form a brace for the side wall [6. The section I8 is folded inwardly at right angles to the section 14 to form a part of the inner bottom of the carton. The section [9 forms the outer right side Wall of the carton. The section is folded inwardly at right angles to thesection 19 to form the top side wall. The section 2| is folded downwardly at right angles to the section 20 to form the inner side wall. Section 22 is folded outwardly at right angles to the section 2| to form a brace therefor. The section 23 is folded inwardly at right angles to the section [9 to cooperate with the section I8 to form a part of the innerbottom of the carton. The sections l4 and I9 are folded backwardly at right angles to the section In so that the bottom members l8 and 23 slightly overlap.

The section 24 is folded inwardly at right angles to the side wall l4. The section 25 is folded inwandly at right angles to the side wall l3, and the sections 24 and 25 are interlocked by means of the slots 26 and 21 carried by them. It will be noted that the slot 21 is on the lower edge of the member 24 while slot 26 is on the upper edge of member 25 so that they may interlock in a manner well known. The members 24 and 25 thus join to hold the side members in place and to form a back wall. This completes a rectangular form having the bottom formed of the sections l8 and 23. The section 28 is then bent rearwardly at right angles to the front wall N3 so as to form the bottom of the carton and underlie the inner'bottom I8, 23. The section 29 is then turned upwardly at right angles to the bottom 28 to form an outer rear wall. The section 30 is to be folded forward at the edge of the section :29, but before this is done section 3| may be folded backward to come in contact with the member 30. The section 29 will lie against the back of the interlocked members 24 and 25 and the combined members 30 and 3! may then be turned downwardly so as to lie substantially parallel to the back wall 29, the section 30 lying in contact with the inner side of the joined members 24 and 25, the joint between the members. 30 and 3| being at the bottom of the carton. The section 32 may then be folded forward at right angles to the section 3| to form the cover for the carton. The section 33 may then be folded downward at right angles to the cover 32 and'its end may be locked by passing through the slot 34 provided in the front wall l0.
The inner side wall members 16 and 2| are shorter than the outer side Wall members l4 and I9, so that when they are formed in the carton the edges of IS and 2! will lie against the inner wall i2 which is separated by the width of the section I! from the outer .front wall I0. The inner ends of the top side wall sections l5 and 20 are beveled at 39 and 40 so that they may slightly overlie the ends of the top H of the front side wall, thus giving the appearance of beveled joints. The sections 30 and 3! are both shorter than the back wall 29, so that when they are folded in they may be placed between the inner side walls [6 and 2|. The members 24 and 25 are recessed at 31 and 38 from their ends inwardly so that the members 30 and 3l may lie wholly below the side top members 15 and 20, and they are so proportioned that the-cover 32 may not at its The cover 32 is hinged to the member 3|. These may be bent in-' wardly from the walls I6 and 2| and engage the section 3| toward its ends so as to hold the section 3| more or less rigidly in place to allow manipulation of the cover 32.
The slot engagement of the member 33 may not be necessary. The slot 34 and the member 33 may be omitted or may be differently formed and the cover may b held in place by other suitable means, or gravity may be sufficient to hold it in position. The bracing members I3, I! and 22 at the bottoms of the inner side walls may be desirable to keep the inner side walls sufficiently distant from the other side walls, but they are not essential and when desired they may be omitted. The sizes, proportions, and specific arrangements of the various parts are not essential to all phases of the invention, and various changes and omissions may be made without departing from the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall having a slot therein, side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, side top walls articulated at the tops of the side walls and extending inwardly and having their front ends inclined inwardly, inner side walls articulated at the inner sides of the top side walls and extending downwardly, side wall brace members articulated at the lower edges of the inner side wallsand extending outwardly to the side walls, a front top wall articulated at the top of the front wall and extending inwardly and underlying the inclined ends of the top side walls, an inner front wall articulated at the inner edge of the front top wall and extending downwardly at the front ends of the inner side walls, a front wall brace member articulated at the bottom of the irmer front wall and extending outwardly to the front wall, inner bottom members articulated at'the bottom edges of the side members and extending inwardly in contact with the side wall and front "wall brace members,
connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlockin with each other, a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear ends of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members. a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side walls, inwardly extending members near the rear ends of the inner side walls engaging and retaining the reinforcing members, a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member and extending forwardly, and a locking flap articulated to the front edge of the cover member and extending downwardly and engaging the slot in the front member.
2. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall having a slot therein, side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, side top Walls articulated at the top of the side walls and extending inwardly and having their front ends inclined inwardly, inner side walls articulated at the .inner sides of the top side walls and extending downwardly, side wall brace members articulated at the lower edges of the inner side walls and extending outwardly to the side walls, a front top wall articulated at the top of the front wall and extending inwardly and underlying the inclined ends of the top side walls, an inner front wall articulated at the inner edge of the front top wall and extending downwardly at the front ends of the inner side walls, a frontwall brace member articulated at the bottom of the inner front wall and extend ing outwardly to the front wall, inner bottom members articulated at the bottom edges of the side members and extending inwardly in contact with the side wall and front wall brace members. connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlocking with each other, a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear ends of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending ul wardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforc ing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side walls, a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member and extending for-' wardly, and a locking flap articulated to the front edge of the cover member and extending downwardly and engaging the slot in the front member.
3. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall, side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, side top walls articulated at the tops of the side walls and extending inwardly, inner side walls articulated at the inner sides of the top side walls and extending downwardly, side wall brace members-articulated at the lower edges of the inner side walls and extending outwardly, a front top wall articulated at the top of the front wall and extending inwardly, an inner front wall articulated at the inner edge of the front top.wall and extending downwardly, a front wall brace member articulated at the bottom of the inner front wall and extending outwardly, inner bottom members articulated at the bottom edges of the side members and extending inwardly, connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlocking with each other, a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear ends of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge .of the first reinforcing member and extendextending downwardly.
4. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall, side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, side top walls articulated at the tops of the side walls and extending inwardly, inner side walls articulated at the inner sides of the top side walls and extending downwardly, side wall brace members articulated at the lower edges of the inner side walls, a front top wall articulated at the top of the front wall, an inner front wall articulated at the inner edge of the front top wall and extending downwardly at the ends of the inner side walls, a front wall brace member articulated at the bottom of the inner front wall, connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending in wardly and interlocking with each other, a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear end of theside walls, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, 'a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side walls, and a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member and extending forwardly.
5. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall, spaced inner and outer members forming side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlocking with each other. a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear end of the side walls inner bottom members articulatedat the bottom edges of the side members and extending inwardly in contact with the bottom member, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the to ed e, of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side wall members, and a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member and extending forwardly. In a carton formed from 'a'single sheet of material, a front wall, spaced inner and outer members forming side walls articulated to the front wall. connecting members articulated to the rear edges of the side walls and interlockin with each other. a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extendin rearwardly to the rear end of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at the rearedge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and.
extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side wall members, and a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member.
7. In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall, spaced inner and outer members forming side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, connecting members ar ticulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlocking with each other, a. bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front Wall and extending rearwardly to the rear end of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of the rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a second reinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the inner side wall' members, inwardly extending members near the rear ends of the inner side wall members engaging and retaining the reinforcing members, a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing member and extending, forwardly, and a locking flap articulated to the front edge of the cover member. v

In a carton formed from a single sheet of material, a front wall, side walls articulated at each end of the front wall, side top walls articulated at the tops of the side walls and extendin inwardly, inner side walls articulated at the inner side of the top side walls and extending downwardly, a front top wall articulated at the top of the' front wall, an inner front wall articulated at the inner edge of the front top wall and extending downwardly, connecting members articulated to the rear ends of the side walls and extending inwardly and interlocking with each other, a bottom member articulated at the bottom edge of the front wall and extending rearwardly to the rear ends of the side walls, a rear wall articulated at. the rear edge of the bottom member and extending upwardly substantially in contact with the rear side of the connecting members, a first reinforcing member articulated at the top edge of th rear wall and extending downwardly substantially in contact with the inner side of the connecting members, a secondreinforcing member articulated at the bottom edge of the first reinforcing member and extending upwardly substantially in contact therewith, both reinforcing members lying between the innerside walls, and a cover member articulated at the top edge of the second reinforcing memher and extending forwardly.
