M A mrueyi Patented Apr. 25, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in combined ash trays and coasters for use as a table accessory, the principal object in view being to provide a device of this character for obviating in the use thereof tablecloth burns and stains, and the like, and which may be distributed to the trade in the form of an inexpensive prepared blank easily folded by a housewife, for instance, to form the ash tray and coaster.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of my combined ash tray and coaster in its preferred embodiment,
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation,
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section taken on the line '44 of Figure 1,
Figurefi is aview in longitudinal section taken on the line j'e';5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a view'in transverse section t k n on the line 6-6 of Figure ;1..
Figure '7 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 1-1 .of Figure 1 and drawn to a greatly enlarged scale, and
Figure ,8 is aplan View of the'blank from which the ash tray and coaster are formed.
Referring to the drawings by numera s; and first to Figurefi illustrating the prepared blank, said blank comprises a body portion having the form of a partially circular flap 16 provided with radial ribs 11, and a rectangular panel l2 lying in the same plane as the flap l6 and extending lengthwise tangentially from the flap l6 which extends from one side of said panel [2 adjacent one end thereof. A short, rectangular striplike side flap 2 extends along said side of the panel [2 for bending upwardly thereof along a longitudinal line d, one end of said flap 2 extending beyond the corresponding end. of the panel l2. A side flap 3 extends along the other side of the panel l2 and beyond said panel in a manner similar to flap 2 and for bending on a longitudinal line f. Adjacent one end of flap 3 a short slit g is formed between the same and the panel 12. An end flap I extends from the end of panel l2 for folding along a transverse line i, a shorter strip-like flap extends from the other end of said panel [2 for bending along a transverse line is, and a relatively longer flap 6 extends from flap 5 for folding along a transverse line-m. From one end of flap 3 a relatively shorter similar flap .1 extends .endwise for fold.- ing on flap '3 along a transverse line 0, and from the opposite end of the flap 1 .a similar longer flap 8 extendsendwise for folding thereon on a transverse line q. A panel of elongated rec.- tangular form extends endwise from .one side edge of flap 8 with a central narrower .tab 13 extending from its opposite end. The panel is divided into a pair of flaps .9, H and an intermediate flap ill, the end flap .t being foldable on the flap 4) on a transverse line 111- and the flap H on the flap 9 on a transverse line 1., the flap ll being foldable .on the flap Ill on a transverse line 3 and the tab 13 being 'foldable on the flap II on a transverse line 2. The flap H) is cut out to provide a pair of arcuate edge tabs M, l5 on the flaps 9,, respectively, in the transverse center thereof. At the other end of the flap 3 is a flap 4 similar to flap -1 foldable on a line w, and a shorter flap 2' foldab-le on flap 4 on a transverse liney'.
The described blank is folded in a manner new to be described to provide an elongated rectangular ash tray with a coaster extending from one side thereof. First, flap-l is folded up on line i on the panel 12 to form an end wall 1| at one end of the ash tray extending above the sides thereof. The flap 2 may then befolded'up on line d to form'part ,of an inner side wall 2 on on side o the a t y. Next f an isp o sied .up o ne I to rm th bthe sid wal 3 f sa d tray, fla folded on line write f rm a i ne end Wall 4 a the othe ndof sai t ay, an lap .2 folded on' line :yf t0, align with flap ,2 'andrcpm plete the side wan 2. The flap 5 is'folded on line lc against flap 4 to form an outer end wall 5 against end Wall 4 at the corresponding end of the tray, and flap 6 folded on line m over the upper edge of flap l0 and over panel 12 to form an inner top wall 6 closing approximately onehalf of the top of said tray. Next, flap 1 is folded on line 0 across end Wall I outside the same to form a keeper wall I, and flap 8 then folded on line q alongside the side wall 2 to form an outer side wall 8 along the same. As will be noted, since the flaps 3 and 2 extend beyond one end of the panel l2, as previously described, the keeper wall I is spaced from the end wall Next, flap 9 is folded outwardly on line w up along side wall 8, as at 9, flap I0 folded on line x over top Wall 6 to form an outer top keeper wall Hi overlying wall 6, fiap ll folded down on line y alongside side wall 3, and tab [3 folded on line 2 and tucked through slit 9 into the bottom of said tray over the panel l2 forming the tray bottom and whereby said tab l3 forms a locking device through the medium of which all of the described flaps are held in folded position. The tabs [4, l5 when the flaps 9 and H are folded assume upright positions on opposite sides of the ash tray forming finger grips l4, IS. The space between the keeper wall 1 and end wall 8 may be used forinserting a match book, not shown, therein. The flap l6 forms the coaster, as will be clear, with radial ribs [1 thereon.
As Will now be seen, the ash tray and coaster holding cigarettes thereon and whereby the other half of the tray is open to receive cigarette ashes and butts.
2. An ash tray comprising a single piece of foldable material, said tray including an elongated rectangular bottom, side Walls folded upwardly from the side of the bottom and having ends extending beyond one end of said bottom,
. an inner. end wall folded up from said end of of said tray adjacent one end for convenient use thereof, and said end of the tray is covered for use, if desired, in laying a cigar butt thereon between the hand grips l4, [5, while the other end of said tray is open and offset from the coaster l6 within convenient, easy reach without interference with a glass set on the coaster [6. The match book, not shown, is held in a convenient position for access thereto when desired. Also, the sides and ends of the ash tray are reinforced. The folding lines described are preferably impressed in the described blank. The ribs I! tend to prevent a glass on the coaster from slipping and from adhering thereto. .The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, i susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
.What I claim is: v
1. An ash tray comprising a single piece of foldable material, said tray including an elongated rectangular bottom, side walls folded upwardly from the sides of the bottom and having ends extending beyond one end of said bottom, an innerendwallfolded up from' said end of the the bottom and extending above the Side walls,
