2 Claims.
The present invention relates to electrically lighted lamps in general and particularly to an electric table lamp. More specifically the invention comprises an electric lamp provided with a multiplicity of sources of light which can be brought into various positions.
It is an object of the invention to-provide a new and novel electrically lighted lamp. Another object of the invention is to provide a lamp of the candelabrum type which allows the bringing of parts of the lamp into various positions so as to give it the form of a symbol or the like, specifically to form in a new and surprising manner the letter V, and at the same time to produce various attractive light effects.
The above and other objects not specifically mentioned at this time will be best understood from a perusal of the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lamp shown in a position in which it has the form of an ordinary candelabrum type lamp;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same lamp shown in a position in which parts of it form the letter V.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lamp as it appears when it is in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A center post i, which may be of any approved design or materialpreferab1y of wood or plastic material-and which has a base 2 at its lower end, carries an electric light fixture 3 at its top and is provided with a flattened portion 4 through which a screw 5 extends. Two broad, flat arms 6 and l, of wood, plastic material or the like, are secured to the flattened portion 4 by means of the screw 5 and a wing nut 8. Electric light fixtures 9 are pivotally secured to the free end of each arm. I prefer to carry out this feature of my invention in the manner shown in the drawing, where it will be seen that flat parts Ill carrying the light fixtures 9 are secured to the arms by means of screws H and wing nuts I2; each screw H extends through the free end of an arm and through one of the parts [0.
Current controlling means, such as switches M. can be arranged at any suitable place of the lamp, and current conductors (not shown) can be either attached to the rear side of the lamp or can pass through suitable channels (not shown) in the various parts of the lamp.
If the parts of the lamp are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the lamp forms a candelabrum, and two of its sources of light (9) throw light toward the table or surface on which the lamp stands, whereas three sources of light (3 and 9) throw light upwards, normally toward the ceiling of a room from which the light will be reflected in a well known manner.
By changing the position of the arms 6 and l and of the fiat parts l0, Various symbolic forms can be attained, for instance the form of a V as shown in Fig. 2. The lamp shades of the electric light fixtures 3 and 9 can be of any approved ornamental design or color. To facilitate the moving of the arms 6 and I, particularly for forming the letter V, I prefer to make the lamp shade of the fixture 3 in the form of an inverted cone, as in the instance shown, where it will be seen that the lamp shades of the other fixtures 9 and the form of the base 2 as well are made conical.
In order to emphasize the symbol formed by the arms 6 and l, I prefer to paint the arms 6 and I in a dark color and have all other parts in lighter colors. For instance, if a lamp according to the present invention is offered for sale as, say, a "1943 good luck victory lamp, I paint the arms 6 and 1 dark red and keep all other parts in white; or I make the arms dark red or dark blue and keep the lamp shades and the base blue, white and red.
The fixtures 9 can be adjusted in positions which are adapted to create attractive light effects and to improve the appearance of the symbol formed by the arms. Since the arms 6 and 1 are of considerable width, large washers Hi can be used to prevent any damaging of the arms when the screws 5 o H are firmly tightened. The adjustable parts can, therefore, be held safely in any desired position.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to one single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. In an electric lamp, the combination of a conical base, an upright shaft fixed thereon and carrying conductors for electricity and having switches at its outer side, a flat vertical member extending from the upper end of said shaft, 8.
central electric light fixture having an inverted conical lamp shade secured to the upper end of said vertical member, flat arms pivotally connected to said vertical member by means of a screw and a wing nut, and flat parts being pivotally connected to said flat arms and carrying electric light fixtures, all substantially as set forth.
2. An electric lamp comprising a center post having a base plate at its lower-end and a fiat- 10 tened portion at its upper end; an electric light fixture carried by said flattened portion of said center post; two broad, flat arms pivotally connected to said flattened portion of the center post; flat parts, carrying electric light fixtures, pivotally secured to the free end of each of said arms; and means for retaining said arms and said fiat parts at the free ends of said arms in any chosen position.
