2 Claims. (Cl. 240-10) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in lamps, and more particularly to an electric table lamp, and has for its primary object to provide a spherical shade surrounding the light bulb and adapted to be painted or otherwise ornamented to simulate the moon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp shade of spherical form and constructed of translucent material and suitably ornamented or decorated to produce a desired artistic appearance and also to provide a substantally flat transparent ring supported horizontally at the center of the shade to produce a halo effect by the light from the electric lamp positioned in the shade.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View, with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a top plan View.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a lamp base of any suitable material and of semi-spherical form to provide a at bottom for resting on a table or other supporting surface.
A hollow standard 6 extends vertically from the base 5, the standard being constructed of upper and lower sections connected to each other by means of a ball and socket swivel joint l, the socket being split at one edge and provided with spaced-apart ears 8 through which a screw 9 is threaded for contracting the socket about the ball I to secure the upper section of the standard in adjusted position.
The upper end of the standard 6 is formed with a lamp socket II in which an electric lamp I2 is mounted.
An extension cord I3 extends into the base 5 and upwardly through the standard 6 to provide a connection for the lamp I2 and the base is also provided with a` switch I4 for energizing and de-energizing the lamp.
The lamp I2' is enclosed within a spherical shade I5 of translucent material and composed of upper and lower sections I6 and I1, having their connected edges rabbeted, as indicated at I8 for overlapping engagement with @ach other.
The surface of the shade I5 may be painted, or otherwise decorated to represent clouds I9 whereby the shade will produce a moonlight effect when the lamp I2 is energized.
A flat ring 20 of transparent material is supported horizontally at the lower edge of the upper section I6 of the shade, the ring projecting horizontally outwardly at all sides of the shade and is positioned substantially in the horizontal plane of the center of the lamp I2, as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing. Accordingly, both the upper and lower surfaces of the ring 20 will be illuminated and the light reflected on the ring will produce the halo eifect.
The ring may be secured to the upper section I6 of the shade in any suitable manner, such as by cementing or the like, and the upper section II of the shade andthe ring are removable from the lower section I1 to aiord access to the lamp I2.
It is believed the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the article will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that various changes in construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what Ik claim is:
1. A lamp of the class described comprising a base, a hollow standard rising from the base and comprising swivelly connected upper and lower sections, an electric bulb mounted in the upper end of the standard, a spherical translucent shade supported on the standard and surrounding said bulb, and a flat transparent ring surrounding said shade at the center thereof.
2. A lamp of the class described comprising a base, a hollow standard rising from the base and comprising swivelly connected upper and lower sections, an electric bulb mounted in the upper end of the standard, a translucent spherical shade including upper and lower detachable sections supported on said standard and surrounding said bulb, and a flat transparent ring surrounding one of said sections of the shade at its connected edge.
