2 Claims. (Cl. 240-81) This invention relates to portable electric lamps and more particularly to a portable table or floor lamp having an interiorly illuminated hollow stand.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide a portable electric lamp having a hollow stand provided with light emitting openings and lamp bulbs in the stand for transmitting light through the openings therein; which has lamp bulbs of different colors in the hollow stand and switch means individually controlling the illumination ofthe several lamp bulbs, so that these lamp bulbs may be selectively illuminated singly or in desired combinations; which may have a clear bulb and a shade mounted on the stand and a separate switchfor the clear bulb, if desired; and which is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, safe to use, and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portable electric lamp illustrative of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a wiring circuit diagram of the lamp.
With continued reference to the drawing, the lamp in the form illustrated, has a hollow base of rectangular or substantially square shape having spaced apart and substantially parallel top and bottom walls 11 and 12 and side walls 13 to 16 inclusive extending between the corresponding edges of the top and bottom walls and disposed substantially perpendicular to the top and bottom walls and to each other. The bottom wall 12 is provided with an opening occupying the major portion of its area and legs or buttons 17 project from the outer surface of the bottom wall, one at each corner of the base, for supporting the lamp on a supporting surface, such as a table top in the case of a table lamp, or on a floor in the case of a floor lamp.
A hollow stand, generally indicated at 20, is mounted on the top wall 11 of the base 10 and includes a lower portion 21 of rectangular shape and an upper portion 22 of pyramidal shape extending upwardly from the top of the lower portion 21. The lower portion has side walls, as indicated at 23 to 26 inclusive, disposed perpendicular to each other, and has at its bottom flanges, as indicated at 27, extending perpendicularly inwardly from the bottom edge of each of the side walls 23 to 26 inclusive and resting upon the top surface of the top wall 11 of the base. The lower portion 21 also has a flat top wall 28 provided with a central opening registering with the open bottom end of the pyramidal upper portion 22 of the stand and the upper and lower portions of the stand 20 and the base 10 preferably have a common center line perpendicular to the top wall 11 of the base.
The stand 20 is detachably secured to the base 10 by shape and arrangement of 2,734,998 Patented Feb. 14, 1956 suitable means, such as the screws 30 which extend through the apertures in the top wall 11 of the base and are threaded into tapped holes in the bottom flange 27 of the stand. Each side wall of the bottom portion of the stand is provided with openings, as indicated at 31, arranged in a desired pattern and transparent panes, as indicated at 32, are disposed, one against the inner side of each of the side walls of the lower portion of the stand in covering relationship to the openings in the corresponding side walls and are secured to the side walls by suitable means, such as the clips 33 secured to the side walls and marginally engaging the transparent panes.
The walls of the pyramidal upper portion 22 of the stand are also provided with openings, as indicated at 35, of any desired shape and arranged in any desired pattern, and panes of transparent material, as indicated at 36, are disposed one against the inner side of each wall of the upper portion of the stand in covering relationship to the openings of the corresponding wall and are secured to the corresponding walls by suitable means, such as the clips 37 secured to the walls of the upper portion of the stand and marginally overlying the transparent panes 36. ' While the lamp base has been shown as of rectangular shape and the stand'has been shown as having a bottom portionof rectangular shape and a pyramidal portion extending upwardly from the bottom portion, and a particular shape and arrangement of openings has been shown in the side walls of the stand, it is to be understood that the shape of the base and the hollow stand and the the openings in the 'walls thereof may be varied without in any way exceeding the scope of the invention. 7
A rigid lamp cord tube 40 extends at one end-through a centrally located aperture 41 in the top wall 11 of the base 10 and extends through the stand 20 substantially perpendicular to the top wall of the base with its end remote from the base extending through a centrally located aperture 42 in the top wall 43 of the stand.
A lamp bulb socket 44 of known construction is threaded onto the screw threaded upper end portion of the tube 40 above the top wall 43 of the stand, and a nut 45 is threaded onto the screw threaded lower end portion of the tube below the top wall 11 of the base 10 and this tube assists in firmly securing the stand to the base.
An extension cord 46 leads into the lower end of the tube 40 and extends through this tube to the bulb socket 44 to which it is connected, the bulb socket including a switch operated by a switch knob or lever 47 in a well known manner. A clear electric light bulb 48 is mounted in the socket 44 and a shade supporting harp 49 is secured at one end by the socket 44 against the top surface of the top wall 43 of the stand and extends upwardly from the top wall of the stand around the bulb 48. A lamp shade 50 of known construction is mounted on the upper end of the harp 49 and surrounds the bulb 48.
It is to be understood, however, that the bulb 48, harp 49 and shade 50 may be omitted, if desired, without exceeding the scope of the invention.
Lamp bulb receptacles 51 to 54 inclusive are disposed on the upper surface of the top wall 11 of the base in surrounding relationship to the cord tube 40 and one near each corner of the rectangular top wall, and these receptacles are secured to the base by suitable means, such as the screws 55, and have upwardly opening lamp bulb sockets, as indicated at 56, one on each receptacle. Differently colored lamp bulbs, as indicated at 57 to 60 inclusive, are mounted one in each of the receptacles 51 to 54 inclusive, and each receptacle is provided with an individual energizing circuit for illuminating the lamp bulbs 57 to 60 either separately or in desired combination.
Toggle switches, as indicated at 61 to 64 inclusive, are mounted in apertures in the side wall of the base 10 in spaced apart relationship to each other and are all connected at one side to the wire 65 of the extension cord 46 by a common conductor 66.- The bulb receptacles 51 to 54 inclusive are all connected at one side to the other wire 67 of the extension cord 46 by a common conductor 68, and the bulb receptacles are respectively connected at their other sides to the sides of the switches 61 to 64 not connected to the conductor 61 by individual conductors, as indicated at '70 to 73 inclusive.
With this arrangement, the lamp bulbs 57 to 60 inclusive may be selectively illuminated individually by closing the appropriate switches 61 to 64 inclusive, or may be illuminated in desired combinations by closing selected switches and the clear bulb 48 may be turned on and oil by the switch actuator 47, as may be desired. When the lamp bulbs 57 to 60 inclusive in the hollow stand are illuminated, differently colored light or light of difierent combinations of colors is emitted through the light emitting openings in the hollow stand.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
l. A portable electric lamp comprising a hollow base having a top wall, a hollow stand provided with light emitting openings and including a lower rectangular portion having side walls provided with flanges extending perpendicularly inward for attachment to said top wall and an upstanding pyramidal upper portion, a plurality of lamp bulbs of different colors mounted in spaced relation on said hollow base top wall and disposed to extend vertically within said lower portion of said stand for emitting colored light through the openings in said stand, and an individual energizing circuit operatively connected to each of said lamp bulbs including a manually operated switch for controlling the particular circuit, said switches being mounted in a wall of said base in spaced apart relation to each other.

A portable electric lamp comprising a hollow base having a top wall, a hollow stand including a lower rectangular portion having side walls provided with flanges extending perpendicularly inward for attachment to said top wall and an upstanding pyramidal upper portion, said rectangular portion and pyramidal upper portion having spaced light emitting openings therein, a plurality of lamp bulbs of difierent colors mounted in spaced relation on said hollow base top wall and disposed to extend vertically within said lower portion of said stand for emitting colored light through the openings in said lower portion and said pyramidal upper portion, and an individual energizing circuit operatively connected to each of said lamp bulbs including a manually operated switch for controlling the particular circuit, said switches being mounted in a wall of said ,base in spaced apart relation to each other.
