2 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide a lamp having a transparent standard of decorative form mounted upon a supporting base, the standard enclosing a supplementary night lamp, i. e., a socket-held bulb of low candle power, the standard preferably carrying a 3-way switch for controll n the circuit to both the primary lamp bulb and the night lamp bulb. This is accomplished by a novel and simple assembly which will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the base member and the preferred form of the standard.

Referring to the drawings, I have shown a hollow primary base member I, which may be constructed of wood, molded plastic or other suitable material and having at its lower edge apertures to receive screws 2 which pass through the secondary base member 3 and carry spring fingers 2' for removably clamping the secondary base member to member I. It will thus be noted that the secondary base member 3 is a closure plate for the interior of the primary base member and the balls 29: carried by the screws serve as foot rests for the lamp.
Mounted upon the primary base member and passing into a top aperture formed in the same is the standard 4 constructed of glass or other transparent or translucent material. I prefer that the standard be constructed of glass and that its surface be molded or pressed with the facets 4113, Figure 2, for the purpose of diffusing the light projected therethrough by the night lamp later to be described.
The top wall of the standard is formed with an aperture preferably threaded to receive the threaded stem 5a: for the lamp socket member 5 into which may be threaded the electric bulb 6 and upon which may be mounted the shade 'l. The threaded stem Bar is preferably tubular in form as shown in Figure 3 so that the Wires for socket 5 may pass upwardly from the base I and standard 4 for connection with the socket.
Secured upon the threaded stem 53: is a shoulder member 8 which may be Washer-like in form, and carried above the shoulder member is the bent end of a spring wire clamp member 9 which at its lower ends is hooked to firmly engage the upper and inner wall of the primary base member I, holding the same firmly against an annular shoulder 4am.
Passing through an aperture in the primary base member I is a positive lead wire p and negative or return wire n, the positive .wire leading to a three-way switch plug ll] of any suitable construction controlled by the rotary switch fingerpiece ll. known in the art and do not form a part of the present invention.
When the switch fingerpiece is turned to a certain position the current will pass from the positive wire 12 through lead, Wire Z to the socket l2 through the night lamp l3 and from the socket shell back through negative wire n, completing the circuit.
When the finger-piece H is turned to a further position the current will pass from positive wire 10 through feed wire Zr to a lamp socket 5 through the lamp 6 and thence to the return wire 11., completing the circuit. When the switch bridges wires 10, Z, and la: both lights will be energized. The night lamp socket may be of the usual type internally threaded to receive the small night lamp bulb l3.
In assembling the lamp the night lamp socket is wiredand the wires for the main socket 5 are passed upwardly through the threaded stem 5w prior to securing the wires to the main socket. The night lamp socket with the wire clamp member 9 is then moved into the standard with the stem 5x projecting upwardly through the aperture, whereupon wires passing upwardly through the tubular threaded stem 5:1: are attached to the main lamp socket 5 and the latter fastened to the member Eat-by the set screw M. The main base member is then placed in position and the hooks of the spring clamp member snapped into contact therewith, whereupon the wires 11., p, are passed through the aperture of the said base member and the appropriate wires are secured to the switch block I8, the final operation being to snap close the bottom of the primary base member I by the base plate 3. It will be seen from these operations that the assembly is simple and may be quickly and economically made.
To replace a night lamp bulb, it is only necessary to remove the member 3, or, if desired, an aperture of the required size may be formed centrally of member 3 and may be covered by a hinge or pivot plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim Switch members of this type are well 10 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a combination lamp, a hollow base member having an aperture at its top and passageways for an electric wire feed and for switchoperating means, of a closure plate for the bottom of said base member, a switch device in said base member, a standard rising from the base member and adapted for the passage of light from within the same, a hollow stem passing upwardly through the standard, a spring clamp device carried by said stem and having retractable hooked ends adapted to spring over into contact with the inner upper wall of the base member, the standard being formed with a flange abutting the top of the base member, two lamp sockets carried by said stem, one projecting downwardly within the standard and one projected upwardly above the standard, and wiring led into the standard and connected to the two sockets and said switch device.
2. A combination lamp constructed in accordance with claim 1, in which the closure plate for the bottom of the base member is secured in BENJAMIN R. LIEBERMAN.
