Walter M. letersdorf,Milwaukee, wis.g;
- 'Applicationi lltlaytlfi, 1947, Serial N6T750415 This invention appertains to electric lighting and more particularly to "bedroom, living room and like lamps.
One of theprimary objects ofmy invention is to provide a, lamp embodying a'suitable base and the usual electric light bulb stand, means incorporated directly with the base of said lamp for giving a low dim light for indicating the exact position of said lamp in a dark room, when the circuit to said usual light bulb is open.
Another salient object of my invention is to provide a lamp embodying a base for supporting the usual incandescent light bulb and shade, in the form of an animal or bird, with small'glow bulbs in said base at the eyes of the simulated figure for not only indicating the position of the lamp, but to give an attractive and ornamental device.
A further important object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient means for mounting the glow bulbs in the base of the lamp.
With these and other objects inview the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a lamp constructed in accordance with my invention, the shade for the incandescent light bulb being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a vertical section view through the lamp taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section view taken at right angles to Figure 2 and on the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, the View illustrating, more particularly, the means employed for holding the glow bulbs in position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the wiring for the lamp.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter L generally indicates my improved lamp and the same includes a base 6 preferably in the form of an animal or bird. In the form of my invention illustrated, I have shown the base constructed to simulate the appearance of an owl and the head of the owl is provided with openteam. (01. 240-10) or bulbs I8 and I9.
ings 1 "at theeyes thereof, for a purpose which will be later set forth. The head is alsoprovided with an interior chamber 8 which opens out through the back of the base or figure. Associated with the base at the extreme upper end thereof is a nipple or standard 9 for an electric light bulb socket ID. The socket II] can receive any preferred type of incandescent light bulb I l. The socket I I] can be provided with a switch l2. It is to be noted that the base is provided with a vertical passageway I 3 for receiving the feed and return wires I4 and I5 for the light bulb. These wires extend out through a suitable lateral passageway 16 for connection with the usual house circuit.
The base 6 can carry a shade or reflector for the, bulb I l and as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 a shade I1 is provided which is snapped on the light bulb II.
The chamber 8 forms a compartment for receiving a companion pair of small glow lamps The bulbs are of a well known character generally employed as pilot lights, current indicators and the like, and one well known type thereof is the bulb placed on the market by the General Electric Company, number N. E. 2.
The glow lamps or bulbs l8 and I9 are carried by a partition wall 20 of cardboard or other insulating material and the wires from the lamps extend through openings 2| in the partition wall which holds the bulbs or lamps in place. The position of the lamps or blubs l8 and I9 is such that when the wall is forced into the compartment 8, the bulbs will be in rear of the eye openings 1.
After the light bulbs l8 and I9 and their resistance elements 22 and 23 are placed in the chamber with the partition wall, a guard wall 24 can be placed in the chamber in rear of the partition wall 20 so as to form a guard for the electric wires I4 and 15. After the guard wall is placed in position plaster of Paris 25 or any like substance can be used to fill the balance of the compartment so that a solid structure will be had.
Referring to the wiring diagram it will be noted that the feed and return wires I4 and I5 lead to the terminals for the incandescent light bulb II and that a switch 26 can be incorporated in one of these wires. Leading oil from the wire [4 are branch wires 21 and 28 and these wires lead respectively to one of the terminals for the glow lamps I8 and I9 and the other terminals of the glow lamps have connected respectively thereto branch return wires 29 and 3|] which are electrically connected with the return wire IS. The resistance elements 22 and 23 can be connected in the length of the wires 21 and 28.
From the wiring diagram, it can be seen that whether the circuit is closed or open to the incandescent light bulb II that current will be supplied to the glow bulbs or lamps I8 and I9 and consequently light from these bulbs will be emitted through the eye openings 1 at all times. This will give a decorative effect and if the circuit is open to the light bulb l I, the glow lamps will indicate the position of the lamp in a dark room.
Changes in details may be made without de-I parting from the spirit or the scope ofmy invention, but what I claim as new is:
A living room and like lamp comprising a base in the form of an animal or bird including va head having a hollow chamber therein and eye REFERENCES CITED -The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
