FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,692, dated November 23, 1880,

Application filed March 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. SHIELDS, of Hickman, in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hook.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to portable fences; and it consists, essentially,in an improved construction of an adjustable and detachable hook by which the fence-panels are supported upon the posts, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and specified.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the posts, which are driven into the ground in the usual manner, and provided with transverse perforations B B to receive the hooks U U. The shanks of the latter are provided at their extreme ends with upwardprojecting sharp studs D, and at a short distance from the ends with similar studs E, projecting in a downward direction.

It will be seen that when the hooks are inserted into the perforations in the posts, which said perforations must of course, be of a diameter not less than the vertical distance between tip and tip of opposite spur-teeth, and their outer ends weighted, the studs or spurs D E are driven into the wood, thus securing the hooks firmly in position.

The panels of my improved fence are, in the drawings, indicated by the letter F. They consistof boards orrails G G, connected, in the usual manner, by cross-pieces H H, the ends of the rails being left projecting beyond the outer cross-pieces for adjustmentin the hooks. The latter, owing to their peculiar construction, may be readily adjusted to fit any thickness of boards or rails of which the panels may be constructed, and the panels, as well as the hooks, may at any time be readily removed and used elsewhere. I

I am aware that it is not new to provide the tangs of hooks and similar devices with spurs, corrugations, or other projections for the purpose of securing retention in the wood-work into which such parts may be driven, and such I do not claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The herein described improved fencehook, the shank of which is provided at its end with an upwardpro jecting, and at a short distance from the end with a downwardprojeeting, sharp stud or spur, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the posts A, having perforations B, hooks C, having studs or spurs l) E, and the panels F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
