CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,685, dated November 23, 1880,
Application filed September 10, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. PAGE, a eitizen of the United States, residing at WVoodbury, in the county of Cannon and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its object to provide a coupler which may be arranged to automatically couple two cars when desired, and which can be operated to uncouple the cars without the necessity of a person passing between the same for the purpose, whereby the danger usually attendant upon the coupling and uncoupling of cars with the ordinary coupling device is obviated.
My invention further has for its object to provide a means wheieby the shock attendant upon two cars coming suddenly together will be taken up and the injurious effects occasioned thereby will be wholly obviated.
These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents a view showing two couplings connected, one in longitudinal section and one in side elevation.
The letter A indicates the body of a freight or passenger car. At each end, below the floor of such car, it is provided with ways B, in which the draw-heads G are secured, the said draw-heads at opposite sides being provided with flanges D, which set in the ways B and permit the draw-head to have a slight reciprocating motion therein.
The rear ends of the draw-heads are slotted transversely, as indicated at E, and through said slot in each head passes a yoke shaped connection, F, attached to a transverse beam, G, rigidly secured to the body of the car. In the said slot, between the connection and the draw-head on each side, is interposed a buffer or cushion, G, of rubber or other elastic material, as indicated. The said connection 1 serves to permit the requisite reciprocating movement to the draw-head, while at the same it limits it, keeping it from moving too far in either direction.
The rear end of the draw-head is provided with a cushion or buffer, H, of rubber or other spring material, which is adapted to abut against the transverse beam G and take up the shock when two cars come violently together.
Each draw-head is made hollow, and has fulcrumed within it, at I, a lever, K, having a shoulder, L, at its forward end, and kept in normal position by means of a spiral or other spring, M, bearing against its rear end. The draw-head also has at one side a pivoted connecting-link, 0, having a hook or shoulder. P, at its end, the said link on the draw-head of one car being adapted to enter the draw- The forward end of thelever K has secured to it a rod, S, which connects with a lever, T, fulcrumed at U to the car, by means of which said lever K may be elevated to disengage the link and uncouple the cars.
The letter W indicates a detent under which the lever T may be secured to prevent coupling of the cars when such would be objectiouable.
The operation of my invention will be apparent from the above without further description; and,
What I claim, andwlesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A recessed draw head provided with a spring-actuated hooked lever, K, and a pivoted hook, O, the lever K lying wholly within the recess of the draw-head and the hook extendin beyond the draw-head and adapted to enter the opposing draw-head and engage the lever-hook thereof, substantially as specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
