Description
(Ho Model.) R. W.'MOGLELLAND.
Tongue Hound for Wagons.
Patente d Nov. 16,1880.
lr A VENTUR W ATTORNEYS NliTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TONGUE-HOUND FOR WAGO'NS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,600, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed May 31, 1880. (No model.)
I T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. MoOLEL- LAND, of Clinton, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon Tongues and Hounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referen ce marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ofa plan of my wagon tongue and hound. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hounds for vehicles; and it has for its object to re-en force such hounds at the bend or weakest point, to form a substantial seat for the double-tree of the vehicle and to provide a means for adjusting the tongue of the vehicle for horses of different sizes, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which The letter A indicates the hounds proper, consisting of a piece of wood bent as shown, and B the re-eniorce, consisting of a metallic casting, provided on its under side with a recess, 0, of a configuration conforming to the bent portion of the hounds, in which said bent portion is secured by means of screws D or otherwise.
The said re-enforce B is formed with a longitudinal cylindrical ton gue holder, E, provided with a cylindrical bore from end to end, of suitable diameter to receive the tongue F and on the top of said tongue-holder is formed a flat seat, G, for the double-tree H of the vehicle, which is secured to the said seat by means of the bolt I. The bolt passes through an aperture in the tongue, and serves to hold the tongue in place; and several of these openings may be formed in the tongue, in order that it may be adjusted longitudinally, as before mentioned.
My invention is designed, principally, for lumber-wagons; but it is evident that it may be applied with advantage to any description of vehicles.
The advantages of the hounds thus re-enforced are apparent without further description.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the bent hound, of the cast-metal re-enforce, having a recess in which the bent portion of the hound is secured, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the re-enforce, the tongue-holder formed thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A re-enforce for wagon-hounds provided with a recess for the hounds, and having a tongue holder and seat for the double tree, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT W. MOOLELLAND.
Witnesses WALTER PEIRsoN, R. A. LEMON.
