UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- GEORGE ASA BRICE, OF TOWNVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIFTH-WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,676, dated July 8, 1873; application filed February 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE AsA BRICE, of Townville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in Spring- Wagons, of which the following is a specification:
The rst part of my invention relates to a new method of attaching the front axle-tree to the spring-bar, and is constructed as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a bottom view of my wagon.
Aisthei'ront axle-tree 5 B, the back axle. LL are two side spring-bars,clipped or bolted on the aXle-trees,andsecured thereto byproperbraces. M is the front cross-bar, and K the anchor-bar. C is an anchor or quadrant shaped metal plate,
better shown at Fig. 3. This plate Gis bolted to the axle-tree A, and is provided with a center or radial arm, c, running back to the bar K, through which the kin g-bolt E passes. H is an arc-shaped slot, through which the guidebolt 1I passes. D is an anchor-piece, shaped as shown at D, Fig. 3. This piece is bolted to the bar M, and also has a radial arm running back to the bar K, through the end of which the king-bolt E passes. The guide-bolt i passes through the slot H and is screwed to D, the bolt moving freely in the slot H when the axle-tree is turned either to the right or left.
This quadrant-plate O and anchor-piece D are intended to supersede and take the place of the old head-block and fifth-wheel now in common use.
T is a safety-hook that is clipped on the axle A and passes back to the king-bolt E.
It will be seen that this construction dispenses with a reach, and can be constructed with much greater strength than either the
