UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS G. GRADY, OF HALIFAX, NORTH CAROLINA.
TOOL FOR JEWELERS USE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,560, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed August 2, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS G. GRADY, of Halifax, in the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Tool for Jewelers Use, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a tool for holding small articles or pieces ofjewelry while being soldered, so as to dispense with binding-wire, plaster-of-paris, and the various inconvenient, troublesome, and dirty contrivances hithertofore used in such work.
My invention consists in a bar or plate provided with articulated arms that carry tweez ers, the parts being so constructed and arranged that thearticles or parts can be placed in the tweezers and brought together and held in any required position for being soldered.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the tool as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in a closed position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a bar or plate of metal, of convenient length, and sufficiently thick to prevent bending while being handled. Instead of the long and narrow bar shown, it may be a plate of triangular or quadrangular form.
To the ends of bar A the arms B B are jointed. These arms are each composed of two or more jointed sections, I), that consist of curved metal plates attached together and to bar A by rivets that permit movement at the joints. with spring-washers to impart sufficient friction for holding the parts in place as turned.
To the end of each arm B is jointed a pair of spring-tweezers, a, which are provided with rings, screws, or other devices by which the article can be clamped. By this construction the articles or pieces to be soldered together may be secured in the tweezers and the pieces brought together in the proper relative position for soldering, in which position they will be held whilethe tool is held in onehand of the operator.
The tool is adapted for use in soldering the various shaped articles, and for all the exigencies of jewelry-work. By its use much time, labor, and annoyance will be saved and better work accomplished.
The tool may have three or four arms B, instead of two, as shown, in which case the arms will be attached to the angles of the triangular or quadrangular plate A before mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tool for jewelers use consisting of bar or plate A, provided with articulated arms B, carrying tweezers a, substantially as shown and described.
LOUIS G. GRADY.
