The present invention relates to a bottle cap, and in particular, to a cap for a bottle containing nail polish or the like, and may be applied to any type of bottle, either a screw cap type or a ground fitted stopper, whichever may be most suitably used under the circumstances.
The present invention is an improvement on my invention disclosed in my application, Serial Number 326,410, filed March 28, 1940, which has matured into United States Patent No. 2,237,162 patented April 1, 1941.
In the patent above mentioned, there is shown a fiat top cap on which the element simulating a finger nail is swivelled.
In the present invention the construction is somewhat different in that for the most part the cap made in the shape of a hood and the element simulating the finger nail is pivoted in the top and swings up and outward from the side of the cap. This type of construction permits the use of a smaller cap at least in horizontal dimensions and provides a construction in which a minimum amount of material is contained. This construction therefore will be very suitable for types of bottles having a smaller top portion than the base and will also be less expensive in accordance with the smaller amount of material which is used.
The present invention may take various forms of construction and some of these are described in the specification below in connection with the drawings in which Figure 1 shows an elevation of the cap with a fragmentary section near the top portions of the bottle. Figure 2' shows a section on the line 22 of Figure 1. Figure 3 shows a section on line 33 of Figure 2. Figure 4 shows an elevation of the invention shown in Figure l as viewed from the side with a fragmentary section in the top portion of the figure. Figure 5 shows a view similar to that of Figure 4 of a modification of the invention. Figure 6 shows a view similar to Figure 4 of a further modification of the invention. Figure '7 shows a top view of the modification shown in Figure 6 with a part extended. Figure 8 shows a further modification of the view shown in Figure 4 with one of the elements in two positions, the full line position and the dotted line position. Figure 9 shows a top perspective view of the modification shown in Figure 8. Figure 10 is an enlarged view of a portion of the view of Figure 9.
In Figure 1, i I represents the bottle which may be of the screw cap type with a threaded mouth portion 2, adapted to fit and screw into the recess 3, in the cap 4. The cap 4 has the form of a hood and may be in the shape of a frustum of a cone or the end of an ellipse of revolution, or any other type of hood having a curved section symmetrical with a central axis. At the top of the hood 4, as indicated more clearly in the section of Figure 3, there is formed a recess 5 having vertically extending parallel sides cut in from the top of the hood with pivoting recesses 6 and 1 formed in the sid walls of these recesses. The bottom surface 8 of the recess is arcuated in an arc concentric with the pivoting recesses t and l. A bearing block 9, which carries the simulated finger nail ID from which the bearing block extends at a point corresponding to the tip of the finger nail, has projecting, pivots I l and I2 which snap in and fit into the recesses 6 and l in the walls of the recess 5. When desired, thesimulated finger nail [9 may be raised with the projecting pivoting points Ill and l l acting as a pivot around which the element I0 is turned. It will, of course, be noted that the block member 9 has also an arcuate surface [3 which, when the block is properly pivoted in place, is concentric with the are at the bottom of the recess 5. This fit may be made rather snugly, sufficient at least so that the finger nail l0 will stand and remain at the position to which it is raised. The cap 4 may be made of some well known plastic such as Bakelite, Lucite, cellulose acetate, or any such similar material, and the cap itself may be colored any desired color with the element I0 simulating the finger nail to be colored with the same color as that to be contained in the bottle.
In the modifications shown in Figure 5, the simulating finger nail H) has a small projecting end H5 projecting from the end of the finger nail l5, otherwise the bearing block H corresponds to the block 9 of Figures 1 to 4 and this is mounted in a similar recess [8 having an arcuate base I!) corresponding to the are 20 formed around the edge of the block [1. In Figures 6 and '7 the member pivoting the finger nail 2| is a ball 22 which rests in a socket 23 which permits the simulated nail 2| not only to be raised upwards but also to be swung around in any horizontal position as indicated in Figure 7. In the arrangements shown in Figures 8, 9, and 10, the simulated finger nail 24 has a projecting bar 25 near the finger nail tip which bar rests in a slot 21 extending part way around the top of the cap. This slot 21 has its walls sloping downward at one side and gradually changing their direction from one end of the slot to the other. In one end of the slot the bar 25 slopes in a direction to maintain the simulated nail 24 against the side of a cap 26, while at the other end of the slot the direction of the slot is such that the finger nail 24 is brought upwards to a horizontal position. When the user wishes to raise the nail she simply pushes it along the slot from one side to the other, the nail gradually coming up to a horizontal position as indicated by the dotted lines of Figure 8.
Various other modifications of the present invention will be readily understood from the drawings and description of the modifications herein described; The essential feature being the shape of the cap member and the means of pivoting the simulated finger nail whereby it may be brought from a position resting against the side of the cap to a position where the person may put their finger beneath the simulated nail.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. A cap for colored nail polish bottles comprising a cap having a hooded form tapering towards a point towards its uppermost part fitting the top of the bottle, a thin element simulating a finger nail formed to fit on the side of the hooded form with a pointed tip at the end and having a projecting member extending from the inner surface of said thin element at said tip, means hinging said thin element in said projecting member at the top of the cap with said thin element resting against the side of the cap in one partition and said hinging permitting the thin element to be swung outward from the cap to a position substantially at 90 to said axis of the cap.
2. A cap for colored nail polish bottles comprising a cap having a hooded form fitting the top of the bottle, a thin element simulating a finger nail having a projecting member extending on one side from the tip, means hinging said thin element in said projecting member at the top of the cap with said thin element resting against the side of the cap, said hinging permitting the thin element to be swung outward from the cap; said projecting member having side pivoting elements and being positioned in a recess in the top of the cap with said pivoting elements resting in the walls forming said recess whereby said thin element is pivoted.
3. A cap for colored nail polish bottles comprising a cap having a hooded form fitting the top of the bottle, a thin element simulating a finger nail having a projecting member extending on one side from the tip, means hinging said thin element in said projecting member at the top of the cap with said thin element resting against the side of the cap, said hinging permitting the thin element to be swung outward from the cap; said projecting member comprising a ball, and a socket in the top of the cap pivoting said thin element.
4. A cap for colored nail polish bottles comprising a cap having a hooded form fitting the top of the bottle, a thin element simulating a finger nail having a projecting member extending on one side from the tip, means hinging said thin element in said projecting member at the top of the cap with said thin element resting against the side of the cap, said hinging permitting the thin element to be swung outward from the cap; said projecting member comprising a pin, and a curved groove formed across the top of said cap, the inclination of said groove changing in direction gradually from one end to the other end of the groove whereby the inclination of said thin element may be brought from a position lying against the side of the cap to a position extending from the cap as the thin element is advanced along the groove.
