Be .it known that I, THOMAS L. ROBERT- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of p which the following is a specification.

It is the purpose of the invention to provide a device of the character mentioned adapted for the holding of an ink container and keeping the same covered when the ink is not being used, the construction being such that a writer has but to operate the raising means of the cover of the container to reach the ink, the said cover being automatically returnable to closing position upon release of its raising means.

ther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the parts in a closed position.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail showing the parts in a closed position.

Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts in an open position.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a base I. from which projects upright retaining posts 2 joined at their upper ends by a substantial spider 3 which cooperates with the posts in forming a substantial retaining frame for the ink container generally inclicated 4. Now this container consists of a lower section 5 and an upper section 6 which is of an inverted frusto-conical form and is preferably detaehably connected as by zhreads 7 to the correspondingly formed Specification of Letters Patent.

A secondary post 11 extends upwardly from one of the arms 10 of t e spider 3 while the lever 12 is swingingly connected as at 18 to the upper end thereof, one end of the lever being bent to provide a depending portion 14 and this depending portion carries a cover 15 designed for engagement with the upper edge of the neck 8 of the upper section 6 of the container for closing the container.

Suitable means such as a coil spring 16 is now employed and has its respective ends connected to the lever 12 near the bent portion 14- and to one of the arms 10 serving to normally hold the cover in yielding engagement with the neck 8.

In order to raise the cover one of the posts is formed with an extension 17 while swingably connected to the upper end thereof as at 18 is a ring like portion 19 of a lever 20. A cross bar-21 extends across the ring portion of the lever 20 and is disposed over and rests upon the free end portion of the lever 12 while the outer end of the lever 20 terminates in a finger ring 22 which when depressed causes a pressure to be exerted by the cross bar 21 on the free portion of the lever 12 swinging the latter lever about its pivot for the raising of the cover 15 from the neck 8 and aga nst the tension of the spring 16. t is apparent that the pen of the writer may be held in the hand which is used to depress the lever 20 and when the cover 15 is raised it is only necessary to insort the pen (not shown) within the neck 8.
