Another object of my invention is to pro vide a pencil in which a plurality of rods or leads of different colors can be stored inside and which can be selectively placed in operation in the operating end of the pencil.
My invention is more fully described in the accompanying specification and drawing in which 1 Fig. 1 is an outside view of my pencil partly in section, Fig. 2 is another outside view of same, Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the lead tubes all in an inoperative position, Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view similar to that in Fig. 3 with one lead tube in an operative position, Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a clamp, Fig. 6 is a partial sectional view showing one tube for leads in an operative position, and Fig. 7 is a view of the ring that anchors and forms a pivot for the lead clamp.
My pencil consists of a tubular body 1 open on top and drawn at the bottom or at the operating end into a tapering portion into which a tube 2 for leads3is fitted. This tube is flared out on top forming a disc 4.
At the bottomend it has a slot 5 into which the operating end 6 of a lever arm 7 is slidably fitted. This end of the lever has sharp teeth 8 adapted to bear against the lead 3 thereby retaining same in an operating position. The lever 7 is fitted in a slot 9 in the tube 1 and has a handle 10 which can be depressed by the writers finger. The middle portion of the'lever 7 is pivoted on a wire ring 11 fitted in a groove12 in the'body 1. A
fiat spring 13 is placed between the handle 10 and the tube 2 and tends to push the handle 10 out thereby pressing with teeth 8 against the lead 3.
' In four places (or any other suitable numher) holes 14 are punched in the tube 1 equally spaced on its periphery, the punched out portions being bent inside. These portions 15 have holes for ends of hooks 16. A
second set of such-punched out portions 15 and hooks 16 is arranged near the upper end of the tube 1. The other ends-ofthese hooks are attached to tubes 17 for-leads The hooks can swing freely in the holes in the lugs 15 and are so proportioned that when the pencil is laid horizontally on its side, one of the tubes 17 swings out as shown in F ig. 4c and, resting on the other tube, takes a central position in the pencil. Colored marks 18 onthe outside of the tube 1 indicate which tube is in its central position. \Vhen a mark of a certain color is on top then the tube 17 with a corresponding colored lead 3 is placed in an operative position. 1 r
A cap 19 is slidably fitted over'the top of the tubel, and is held in place by a resilient lug 20 fitting in a slot 21 in theftube 1. This cap has also a resilienthook 22 for holding the pencil in a coat pocket. The upper end of the cap 19 is drawn or swe'dged in to hold a piece of erasing rubber 23. Leads of difl'erentcolors are placedin the tubes 17. The tubes 17 andthetube 2 are made suificiently large so that the leads can" freely slide in them. I l
WVhen it is desired to use the pencil, it is laid'on its side with the desired color, as. shown by the mark 18, down. In this position the corresponding tube 17 swings out in its operating position, in Fig. 4, with the lead of desired color in the central position. If
the pencil is now inclined, the lead will slide into the tube 2 and out of it, if the lever 7 is released. by pressing the handle 10 with the 'writers finger.
Release of the handle 10 will cause the lever to clamp the lead which can be then used for writing.
The leads in'the other tubes 17 cannot escape being retained at the bottom with the plate 4; and at the top with the bottom surface of the eraser 23.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a pencil, the combination with a tubular member, of a bottom tube for leadssupported at the operating end of said member,
a plurality of tubes for leads of diiierent colors, hooks hingedly supporting said tubes on the walls of said member, said tubes being adapted to drop, one at a time, by gravity into an operating central position register ing with said bottom tube, said leads being adapted to slide by gravity from said central tube into said bottom tube into an operating position, means to clamp said lead in its operating position, and a cap resiliently supported on to a of said tubular member.
2. In a pencii, the combination with a tubular member, of a bottom tube for leads supported at the operating end of said member, means to clamp a lead in its operating position in said tube, lugs extending inside from the walls of said member, hooks hingedly supported on said lugs, tubessupported on the other ends of said hooks and adapted to hold loosely leads of different colors, said tubes being adapted to selectively swing, one at a time, into central operating position bringing its leads in register with said bottom tube, a cap fitted over the top of said member, a resilient lug on said cap adapted to fit in a slot in said member, and an eraser on top of said cap forming its end and adapted to retain said leads in said tubes.
3. In a pencil, the combination with a tubular member, of a bottom tube for leads supported at the operating end of said member, a plurality of tubes inside of said member for leads of diiferent colors, hooks hingedly supporting said tubes on the Walls of said member, said tubes being adapted to be selectively placed, one at a time, in a central position in register with said bottom tube, said leads being adapted to slide from said central tube into said bottom tube, said operating end of said member being provided with a slot, a lever in said slot, a ring pivotally supporting the middle portion of said lever, a circular groove in said operating end of said member for said ring, and a spring between the upper end of said lever and said bottom tube, said spring being adapted to press the lower end of said lever against said lead in said bottom tube.
