LUGGAGE BAG Filed Dec. 18. 1942 Patented Jan. 25, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LUGGAGE BAG Joseph Wein, Chicago, Ill. Application December 18, 1942, Serial No. 469,409
3 Claims.
The invention relates generally to luggage bags. One object of the invention is to provide a luggage bag of the type which is usually formed of flexible material, such as canvas, and one or more openings therein for access to the luggage space or spaces therein, with an improved dustproof closure for the openings to protect the the detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features which are hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a luggage bag embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on an enlarged,
scale of the parts forming the closure for the opening provided for access to one of the compartments in their closed position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the parts forming the closure spread apart.
Fig. 4 is a view of the closure with the parts partially spread apart to illustrate their construction.
The invention is exemplified as applied to a luggage bag of the dufiel type which comprises a body or main section a adapted to contain suits and which is foldable across its center; pocket-sections a and a attached to one side of the main section; and a pocket-section a attached to the other side of and extending across the main section. A handle I) is usually secured to fold across the main section. The bag and pockets have walls formed of canvas or other suitable flexible material. The main section a and the pocket-sections a a and a may each be provided with a closure embodying the invention. The same construction of closure is used for all sections, and therefore a description and illustration of one closure sufilces for all.
The walls of each bag-section for which the improved closure is used comprise flexible members I0 and H which are separable along the portion of the section where an opening is desired for access to the luggage-space in said section. The marginal portion I [i of member ID and the marginal portion ll of member Hare adapted to overlap each other adjacent the corner of the section where the opening is desired. The edge of portion Ill of member I0 is folded, as at i2, by a row of stitches l3. From thisfold 12 the canvas i extended to form an inturned flexible strip or flap I 4 which is adapted to be folded so it will under lie the marginal portion Ill of member I0. A binding strip [5 is stitched around the inner edge of strip or flap [4. The portion II of member H is adapted to underlie the strip or flap l4 and the marginal portion ll!- of member Hi. Portion H is shown as attached with a corner-strip l6 by a seam l6 to member I I for convenience in fabrication, but is in effect a continuation of said member. Along its inner edge, portion I l is folded and secured by a seam Il and is extended outwardly from the seam to form a flexible strip or flap [1 which extends outwardly from the fold and is adapted to lap the portion I I A binding strip I8 is stitched to the free outer edge of strip l1. Members Ill and H and the flaps l4 and I! are formed of flexible material, such as canvas, so that they may be flexed apart for the opening. The strip M on member Ill is adapted to be inserted or folded between the trip l1 and the portion l l of member II, and the strip or flap I1 is insertable and foldable between the strip or flap l4 and the portion w of member ID to produce an interfold of approximately parallel portions between the members and strips for securely closing the opening against admission of dust. The flexibility of the strips or flaps and the members permits them to be so interfolded and separated.
Fastening means is provided to secure the strips l4 and I 1 together and folded between each other, and the lapping portions of members I0 and II, or in said interfolded relation. This means may consist of a series of fasteners, each of which comprises a, snap socket 20 secured in the strip I4 and a stud 2| secured in the strip I7.
In using the closure the members l0 and H and strips or flaps M and I1 are flexed apart, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. When the opening is to be closed, the strip or flap M on member I0 is inserted or folded to lie between strip I1 and marginal portion H of member II and strip or flap i! is inserted or folded to lie between strip I4 and the marginal portion ll! of member ID. The studs 2| are then pressed into the sockets 2i and the strips and marginal portions will be securedto close the opening, as illustrated in Fig. 2. In order to additionally hold the portion ll of member I l to underlie the strip [4 on member ID, a snap fastener is used which comprises a socket 22 secured to the strip l4 adjacent its outer margin Il of strip H and a stud 23 which is secured to the marginal portion. In opening the closure, the stud and socket 22, 23 will first be disconnected and the member In and its strip or flap M with the strip or flap I'I between them can be flexed, as shown in Fig. 4. Next the series of stud fastners 20, 2| will be successively forced apart. A finger may then be inserted over marginal portion H and between the inner edge of strip I4 and strip I! for separating the studs 2| from the socket 2B. The closure is applicable to any portion of the pockets or section of the bag, and usually extends along one corner, as at a and angularly as at a a sufficient distance to provide an opening of suflicient area for access to the articles in the pocket. It will be understood that any suitable fasteners may be used.
When the pockets or bag is closed, the flexible members and strips are efiectively secured together to form a dust-proof closure for the pro-- tection of the contents of the bag. The invention is particularly applicable to luggage bags which are formed, or in which pockets are formed, 0i flexible material.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A closure for a luggage bag comprising a pair or" members which are flexible for separation to provide an opening for access to the luggage in the bag 01' a portion thereof and are provided with edges adapted to meet along and form a substantially right angled corner, flexible strips on the edgesof the members, respectively, and inwardly fold-able into substantially parallel overlapping relation in the bag, a flexible strip attached to the inner edge of the infolded strip on one of the members and adapted to be interlaid between the other member and its infolded strip, and means for detachably securing together inwardly of the corner the folded strip on one member and the interlaid strip on the other member, said securing members being concealed when the members are closed.
2. A closure for a luggage bag comprising a pair of members which are flexible for separation to provide an opening for access to the luggage in the bag or a portion thereof and are provided with edges adapted to meet along and form a substantially right angled corner, flexible strips on the edges of the member, respectively, and inwardly foldable into substantially parallel overlapping relation in the bag, a flexible strip attached to the inner edge of the infolded strip on one of the members and adapted to be interlaid between the other member and its infolded strip, means for detachably securing together inwardly of the corner the folded strip on one member and the interlaid strip on the other member, said securing membersbeing concealed when the members are closed, and means outwardly of the securing means for the interlaid strip and inwardly of the corner for securing the infolded strips on the members together, said latter securing means being concealed when the bag is closed.
3. A closure for a luggage bag comprising a pair of members which are flexible for separation to provide an opening for access to the luggage in the bag or a portion thereof and are provided with edges adapted to meet along and form a corner, flexible strips on the edges of the members, respectively, and inwardly foldable into substantially parallel overlapping relation in the bag, a flexible strip attached to the inner edge of the infolded strip on one of the members and adapted to be interlaid between the other memher and its infolded strip, and means for detachably securing together inwardly of the corner the folded strip on one member and the interlaid strip on the other member, said securing members being concealed when the members are closed, and a snap-fastener outwardly of the securing means for the interlaid strip and inwardly of the corner for securing the infolded strip on the members together, said latter means being concealed by the members along their corners.
