3 SheeS-Sheet 3 Filed Auf. 7, 1946 Patented "J an. 31, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEv 3 Claims.
The invention pertains to functionally and structurally improved and simplified article holding means appropriately adapted to carry in compact relation manifold records in separate compartments and adapted to desirably sustain substantially without wrinkling articles of clothing and accessories thereof. More particularly the invention is directed to a combined overnight and brief case having a plurality of compartments for conveniently storing in neat fashion record containing folders, books, les, clothing and other articles. One important object is realized in the provision of a serviceable overnight and brief case wherein a substantially rectangular shaped carrier is provided on its opposite faces with spaced gussets having attached thereto outside panels and inwardly disposed retaining means, and a covering, the retaining means disengageably cooperating with a swingable and foldable flap to permit or preclude access to a relatively elongated clothing compartment formed by the carrier, a companion gusset, and the retaining means thereto, the panels forming with companion gussets and the carrier means separate compartments or pockets for storing records or the like. The invention further comprehends the provision of a durable crown portion nested Within and secured to the carrier means and eX- tending appreciably below thereof and common to the outside and spaced panels. Another object resides in the provision of a swingable and relatively elongated flap disconnectably associated with clothing retaining means and having a reversely turned portion desirably secured to a exible partition or baffle defining with an inside covering a supplementary compartment or pocket for storing miscellaneous articles. Other important objects, features, and functional and structural advantages will appear from the following detailed description taken with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a front perspective view of the combined overnight and brief case according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective rear View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an unfolded or expanded view of the combined and overnight brief case.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. l showing the case collapsed.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 illustrating the case expanded.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating the clothing compartment closure partlyunlocked and opened, and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 1--1 of Fig. 6. y
Illustrative of the embodiment disclosed, the overnight and brief case is broadly denoted C and is characterized by an upper flexible leather crown portion l0 of inverted U shape having depending sides I2. To the lower portions of each of the sides I2 is fastened an inverted U-shaped Stringer of slide fasteners I3 by the lines of stitching I4.
Nested Within crown portion l0 and attached thereto by the lines of stitching I5 and I6 (Fig. 4) is the inside relatively durable and flexible carrier means or lining I'I coextensive with the length and width of the case and in the closed relation of the latter is of inverted U-shaped form and through which the lines of stitching I4 also pass.
U-shaped gusset strips I8 are anchored to the substantially rectangular carrier means or lining I'I by the vertical lines of stitching I9 and bythe horizontal lines of stitching 20. The sides 2l (Fig. 6) of the gusset strips I8 are spaced apart to provide relief gaps 22 to preclude` bulging when the case is folded or closed.
The inside margins of the gusset strips or gussets I8 are reinforced by the binding or tapes 23 extending widthwise and lengthwise of the case. Attached to these margins by the lines of .stitching 24 and 25 (Figs. 5 and 6) is the inside flexible wall or partition 26 carrying at its upper margin the leather binding strip 21 secured by the stitching 28 to the reversely turned portion 29 of the rectangular shaped closure or flap 3U. By
the present arrangement, partition 26 and the` lining I'I form a compartment 3| adapted to expand or contract upon expansion or contraction of its companion gusset I8.
superimposed on the partition 26 and defining therewith the supplementary compartment or pocket 32 is the flexible cover 33 secured to a companion gusset I8 and to inner reinforcedA margins thereof by the lines of stitching 24 and 25. The flap 38 and its reversely turned portionj 23 defines a lip 34 disposed widthwise of the case and carries by the lines of stitching 35 a horizon-iv tally arranged string of slide fastening elements 3S.
The cover 33 has its uper portion turned back upon itself forming lip 3l to which is secured by the spaced lines of stitching 38 a string of slide fasteners 39. Lips 34 and 3l define an opening adapted' to be opened and closed by shifting' the slidably guided runner 46 -to separate or lock the complementary strings of slide fastener elements 3 36 and 39 as it is well understood. Thus access may be readily had to the interior of the compartment 32 formed by the baille or partion 26 and the cover 33.
The swingable flap or closure 30 has secured on its longitudinal margins by the spaced lines of stitching 4l and 42, the strings of slide fasteners 43 which cooperate with the strings of slide fasteners 44 attached by the lines of stitching 45 and 46 to the longitudinally disposed marginal clothing retaining strips or carriers 41 secured by the lines of stitching 25 to the gusset I8. As is well understood runners 48 cooperate with the lines of slide fasteners 43 and 44 to disengage the swingable flap or closure 30 from the retaining carriers 41.
Secured by the line of stitching 49 (Fig. 6) to the medial part of the upper margin of the closure 30 is a rectangular piece of leather 50 carrying the complimentary snap fastener element I for disengagingly4 interlocking with a companion complementary snap fastener element or ferrule fastener 52 secured to the upper retaining strip 53 disposed widthwise of the case and secured to its companion gusset i8 by the lines of stitching 24 f and and to the retaining strips or carriers 41 by the spaced lines of stitching 54 and 55. Convenient access to the" interior of the compartment 3l dened by the lining I1 and the ilexible baffle 26 may be had by rst disconnecting the snap fastener elements 5! and 52 and secondly by sliding runners 48 down to the stops 56 secured to the cover 33 by the lines of stitching 38, and thirdly, by withdrawing closure from between the marginal or retaining strips 41. With the closure 36 disconnected as previously described and withdrawn or folded outwardly and downwardly, complete access is had to the compartment 60 dened by lining I1, retaining margins 41, the intervening gusset I8 and the upper retaining strip 53. Compartment 68 communicates with the compartment 3|, thus forming an elongated pocket of the case, permitting articles of clothing to be conned therein. Such clothing is mounted on a hanger SI having a hook 62 s' removably carried by a flexible loop 63 secured by an adjacent line of stitching 20 to a companion gusset I8. By the arrangement disclosed the article of clothing mounted on the hanger 6I may be held neatly and relatively flat and if wide enough is retained against withdrawing from compartment or pocket 63 by the marginal retaining flanges or carriers 41. Baffie or partition 26 also acts against the clothing to hold the latter fiatwise within the compartment 3| which of course is an extension of pocket 66. With flap 38 folded back to its closing and locked position the clothing is closely confined within the communicating compartments 3| and 68 and in a fiatwise relation.
For storing papers, records or the like, other compartments orl pockets as 16 and 1I are provided and each of which is formed by an outside panel 12 secured by the horizontally arranged and vertically spaced lines of stitching 13 and 14, and by the vertically disposed and horizontally spaced lines of stitching 15 and 16, to the expansible and contractible gussets 11 while the latter are secured to the lining or carrier I1 and to an adjacent gusset i8 by the horizontal lines of stitching. 2i) and by vertical lines of stitching I9.
The-upper margins of each of thepanels 12 carry a'stringof slide fasteners 80 adapted to interlock with the companion strings of slide CII fasteners I3 and these are removably interlocked by the usual runners 8 I.
For enlarging compartments or pockets 10 and 1I, swingable expanders 82 are employed and each is provided with a covering 83 having ends 84 fastened to the gussets 11 by the lines of stitching 13. As shown in Fig. 4, expanders 82 are vertical, hence gussets 11 are contracted, consequently, reducing the size of compartments 1l] and 1I. In Fig. 5, the expanders 83 are horizontal and frictionally and removably engage lining or carrier I1, thus holding compartments 16 and 1I expanded.
Appropriately attached to the crown portion I0 is the swingable handle 85 to permit convenient carrying of the overnight and brief case from place to place. For desirably closing the case in a compact relation, spaced loops 86 are xedly carried by spaced strips 86 fastened to one of the panels 12 (Fig. 1). Each of these strips also carry a conventional buckle 81. The free perforated ends 89 of straps 98 are adapted to removably interlock with the prongs 9| of the buckles after which they are removably retained by the loops 86 as is well understood. The straps 86 are secured to its companion panel 12 by the lines of stitching 92. With the straps 93 desirably buckled, separation of the lower parts of the case is precluded.
Briefly recapitulating, the relatively elongated rectangular shaped carrier means I1 has secured on one face thereof the gusset means I8 extendn ing substantially the entire length of the carrier means except for the gap interruptions at 22 and of course this gusset means I8 extends along the entire Width of the carrier means or lining I1. The cover or covering 33 is secured to a lower portion of the gusset means I8. The clothing retaining strips 41 and 53 are vsecured to the gusset means I8 and denes therewith and the carrier means I1 and the cover 33 the relatively elongated inner or major compartment 60 coextensive the Width and length of the carrier means I1. The flexible and foldable flap 36 is interposed between the retaining strips 41 and its reversely turned portion defining lip 34 has secured at one end the baffle or partition 26 characterizing with the cover 33 the supplementary compartment or pocket 32. The crown portion I6 when the case C is closed has nested Within it the carrier means I1 which extends appreciably below the sides I2 of the crown portion I 0.
Various changes may be made in details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof inherent therein.
