Definitions
- My invention has reference to certain improvements in corks or stoppers for bottles, and is particularly designed to afford a stopper which will fit a variety of bottles of different shape and size, and can be used many times without destruction. It is adapted to any liquid except the stronger acids without being affected thereby, is no larger than an ordinary cork, and very simple in its construction.

BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,796, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed March 30, 1880.
- letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has reference to certain improvements in corks or stoppers for bottles, and is particularly designed to afford a stopper which will fit a variety of bottles of different shape and size, and can be used many times without destruction. It is adapted to any liquid except the stronger acids without being affected thereby, is no larger than an ordinary cork, and very simple in its construction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my bottle-stopper, showing it inserted in the neck of an ordinary wine-bottle. Fig.2 is a sectional view of the stopper, and Fig. 3 another form of disk which I employ at the top.
B is a wing-nut, threaded to fit the bolt 0, and bearing upon the disk D, which is provided with a projecting lip, a, to be held by the thumb of the left hand when turning the nut to fasten the stopper in the neck of the bottle A.
E is a cylinder, of wood or other suitable (ModeL) material; and F, another cylinder, of the same material, or simply a metallic washer.
G is a ring or cushion, of rubber, as a piece of rubber tubing.
When the stopper is placed in a bottle, by turning the nut B the rubber G is compressed and expanded outwardly against the inner neck of the bottle in the form shown by the dotted lines G, the disk being drawn upward and compressing the rubber, as shown at F in Fig. 2, thus effectually closing the bottle and preventing the escape of the stopper.
When desired, the stopper can be removed by a reverse movement of the nut.
Instead of the lip a, I can use a fluted or corrugated disk, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new and useful article of manufacture, the bottle-stopper described, consisting of bolt 0, cylinder F, rubber ring Gr, cylinder E, wingnut B, and disk 1), with-lip a, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this 18th day of March, 1880.
' DAVID S. PAISLEY.
