lle device attached to wearing-apparel, bedclothes, doors, windows, &c., and so constructed that it will make alarm and attract attention to any attempt at stealing a watch, pocket-book, or other article of value to which it is for the time applied, or to any attempt by burglars of entering a room during lthe sleep of its occupant.

In theaccompanying` drawings, Figure 1 represents a face View of the said device partly-broken out and with its case open. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken on the line .r a: of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 indicate its application to a door anda pocket-book, respectively.

The casing is made in the shape of an ordinary pocket watch-case,of two halves, A and B, hinged together, the lid AB closing upon the other part, A, and the latter having a hollow stem, C, provided with a chain-ring, D, as in ordinary watches.

The parts A and B are both provided along their edges with a series ot' holes or perforations, a', to allow of free propagation ot' the sound of an alarm gong-bell, E, secured to the part A. This is rung by the hammer b of any ordinary alarm clock-work F, operated by a spring, which is wound by a small handle, c, the latter bein g hinged to the pivot or shaft of the spring-drum, in order to be felled down upon the face-plate of the clock-work F and thus ec'onomize space, allowing of making the inclosing-cover B of the usual shallow form.

The hammer b is, as usual, attached by a wire to the pivot of the escapement-pawl d. To the said pivot, or to the pawl d, is also attached a small wire, e, in position to be stopped in its oscillation, and thus to stop the hammer b, by contact with the inner end of a bolt or pin, G, arranged to slide in the hollow stem C, and to be released and again started (Model.)

by the spring of the clock-work F, to sound the alarm-gong E, when the pin G is drawn out of contact with the said stop-Wire e.

The sliding stop-pin G has a slot, j', through it, and is kept from being slid out ofthe stem C by a screw-pin, h., secured in a-hole in the stem C and going through the slot f. The outer end of the sliding stop G is provided with a ring, g, to which a chain, H, is attached. A spring, I, fastened by a screw, t', in the casing A, is arranged to press with its free end against the side of the pin G and to enter a small groove or cavity, s, in the surface of the latter, in order to retain it in the locked position until sprung out of the groove s by a little extra pull on the chain H.

To the free end of the chain H is attached a small snap-hook, J, provided at its close end with a sharp point or tack, j. To the casering D, as shown in Fig. 1, are attached twosnap-hooks, KL, thc former, K, having scoured to it a sharp tack or point, 7c, and thc latter, L, having attached to it an ordinary safety-pin, M.

The clock-work being wound up andthe pin G in contact with the wire e, as in Fig. l, it is evident that a pull on the chain H sufficient to release the pin G from contact with the said wire e willV cause the alarm to sound. Thus,

if the alarm-case A B were fastened by the safety-pin M inside the pocket or other part of a persons wearing-apparel, or to the pillow or other part of his bed-clothes, and to the chain H were attached a pocket-book, N, as in Fig. 4, or other article of value, au attempt to steal the latter would instantly cause the alarm to sound. The same would also occur on an attempt to enter a room through the door if thel case A B were suspended to the snap-hook K, fastened by its point 7c to the door, and the chain H were fastened by its pointy' to the door-post, as shown in Fig. 4.

The device, having the size and general appearance of any ordinary pocket-watch, is ornamental and convenient to carry, and its construction adapts it for various uses and allows it to be quickly attached and set.

To prevent the alarm from bein g accidentally sounded when not in use, and thus necessitating a rcwinding of the spring, a small slide is lit-ted through the case A and pro- IOO vided with a pin, O7 arranged inside of the case, and a knob, P, on the outside thereof, so that by the knob P the pin O may be pushed into a small socket or cavity in the side of the sliding,` pin G and retain it in the locked position until the knob I) is Withdrawn to release it.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an alarm device constructed in the shape of a pocket-watch, the pin G, arranged to slide through the case-stem G, and operating, in connection with the Wire e upon the pallet-arbor d, to stop and start the alarm, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

2. The combination ofa Watch-case, AB, provided With perforations a, hollow stem C, and stem-ring D, bell E, alarm-work Ii, stop-wire e upon the pallet-arbor d, and friction-spring I with the' slotted sliding pin G, heldin the stem by the screw-pin h and provided with the side notch, s, the ring g, and chain H, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.

3. In combination with the alarm device A B E F C D and pin G, the chain H, attached to the said pin and provided with the pointj, and the hook K, attached to the stem-ring D and provided With the point k, for attaching the device as a burglar-alarm to a door-post and door, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

4; The combination of the pin G, sliding in the stem U of an alarm device constructed in the shape of a Watch, with the stop-slide P O, engaging in a socket in the side of the said pin G, substantially as set forth.
