ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 2, 1914.
Application filed May 29, 1913. Serial No. 770,643.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAoon RIcnMAN, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Alarm, of which t he following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved alarm more especially designed for use on doors and arranged to sound an alarm when a person pushes the locked door. For the purpose mentioned use is made of an alarm device provided with an escapement wheel and an escapement lever, and a locking and releasing device for the said escapement lever to normally look the same against movement, the said lockmg and releasing device being adapted to be engaged by the door bolt when the latter is in closed position.
A. practical embodiment of the 1nvent1on is represented in the accompanymgdrawv ings forming a part of this specification, 1n which similar characters of reference ind1- cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the alarm as applied to a door lock and its keeper; F 1g. 2 is a sectional face View of the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same.
The door A is provided with a suitable door lock B having a bolt C adapted to engage a keeper D attached to the door casing E. On the keeper D is secured the frame or casing F of the alarm provided with a suitable spring G adapted to be wound up for driving a gearing G including an escapement wheel II engaged by an escapement lever I having its shaft I ournaled in the usual manner in the frame F. The shaft I is provided with a striker J adapted to sound a bell K mounted on the frame I and the shaft I is provided with a locking and releasing arm I normally resting on the free end of a spring arm L secured at L to the frame F. The spring arm L is connected by a link N with a swing plate 9 attached to and extending within the keeper I) so as to be engaged by the 1nner face of the bolt 0 when the latter is moved into locking position, that is, into engagement with the keeper D. The swmg plate 0 is preferably a piece of res1lient sheet metal attached to the inside of the keeper and of suflicient stiffness to normally hold the swing arm L in position by the link N so that the arm I is held against movement and consequently the escapement lover I locks the escapement wheel l'I against turning. When the parts are in the position shown and described and an unauthorized person pushes on the door A in an inward direction then the bolt C imparts a swinging motion to the resilient plate 0 whereby the link N exerts a pull on the free end of the arm L to release the arm I sufliciently for the escapement lever I to work, that is, to allow the escapement wheel H to turn whereby the striker J is actuated and sounds the bell K. It will be noticed that as soon as the push on the door A is released the plate 0 returns by its own resiliency to normal position whereby the link N imparts a return movement to the arm L to hold the arm I against further movement, thus holding the escapement lever I in locking position relative to the escapement wheel II to stop sounding the alarm bell K by the striker J.
The alarm shown and described is very simple in construction, can be readily attached to the keeper of a door lock and be fastened with the latter to the door casing, as previously explained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An alarm for doors and the like, con1- prising an alarm device provided with an escapement wheel and escapement lever, a movable member normally engaging the escapement lever to lock the latter against movement, a second movable member adapted to be engaged and operated by a door bolt when the door is pushed inwardly, and a link connecting the said members.
2. An alarm for doors and the like, comprising an alarm device provided with an escapement wheel and escapement lever, a swing arm normally engaging the said escapement lever to lock the latter against movement, a swing plate adapted to be engaged by a door bolt, and a link connecting the said swing plate with the said swing arm.
3. An alarm for doors and the like, com prising an alarm device provided with an escapement wheel and escapement lever, said lever being provided with an arm, a spring arm engaging the arm of the escapement lever, a spring plate adapted to be engaged by a door bolt, and a link connecting the spring plate with the spring arm,
4:. In combination with a door bolt and keeper, an alarm device attached to the said keeper and provided with a bell, a spring motor, a gearing driven by the said motor and having an escapement wheel, an escapeinent lever engaging the said escapement wheel, a striker on the said escapement le ver and adapted to sound the said bell, a locking arm on the said escapement lever, a spring arm engaged by the said locking arm, a spring plate mounted in the said keeper and adapted to be engaged by the said bolt when the latter is moved into locking position in the keeper, and a link connecting the said spring plate with the said spring arm. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
