IMPROVED BURGLAR ALARM.

TO ALL WHOM II MAY CONGERN:
Beit known that I, GEORGE A. COLTON, of Adrian, in the ccunty of Lenawee, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Burglar Alarm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a novel and simple attachment to be applied to the doors of dwelling-houses or other buildings, which attachment is of such a construction and arrangement oi` parts, that, when the'door is opened, an alarm will be sounded, thus warning the occupants of the same of the approach and attempted entrance by burglars.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improved burglar alarm is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side elevation of the same, showing it as applied to'a door; and
I Figure 2, a front viewr Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the frame of the burglar alarm embraced in the` present invention, which is attached to a bed-plate, B,- having secured to one of its ends a cup-shaped-bell, C; I), the hammer, for striking the hell, which, through it stem, E, is attached to tlc spindle, F, turning in suitable bearings of the frame A audits bed-plate B. This spindle, F, carries an anchor-pallet, G, such as is employed in the escapement of watches, clocks, and other similar movements, which pallet, by its hook-shaped ends, H, engages with the teeth, a, of a ratchet-wheel, I. This ratchet-wheel, I, is secured to a spindle or arbor, J, which is. surrounded by'a coiled spring, K, in a similar manner to that used in clock movements, so as to operate, as it uncoils, to revolve theI said ratchet-wheel, and thus, through the anchor-pallet G, rock its spindle F forward and backward, which in its turn throws the bell-hammer alternately against and away from the bell, whereby the said be'll is caused to be sounded or struck with a force in direct proportion to that of the coil or .operating spring, K; the said ratchet-wheel being secured to its spindle in any suitable manner to allow such spindle, by means of a proper key, to be turned, and thus its coiled spring wound up and around the stime, without moving the ratchet-wheel, while at the same time, as the spring unwinds or uncoils, the ratchet-wheel and spindle will turn in common with each other. To hold the pallet G against the teeth of the ratchet-wheel and thus prevent it from turning, a set-screw, L, of a spring-bar, M, attached at one end to the frame A, but loose at its other end, is arranged to bear Vagainst it where it is held, by conning the loose end of such spring in and between the jam of the doorframe and the door, if the alarm is to be used in connection with a door; the frame A, for securing it to a door, being provided with a hook or claw-arm, N, of suitable shape, that by driving it into the door it will firmly hold the alarm to and upon the same.
From the above description, it is plain to be understood land readily apparent, that, if the door to which the alarm is secured asexplained, be opened, the loose en'd of the spring M will be set free, and consequently the holding-screw L released from the anchor-pallet, when, as is obvious, the alarm-bell will be immediately and repeatedly sounded, providing its operating'coiled spring has been first properly and sufficiently wound up therefor. In lieu of securing the burglar alarm to'a door, as hereinabove explained, it may be hung and xed to theinside knob of the same, for which purpose a hook, O, is hung to one end of the bed-plate C of the alarm, that, by means of a set-screw, P, at its hook-end, can be secured to the spindle of a door-knob, so that as it is turned it will turn with it, and thus cause the inner end of such hook to be disengaged from the holding spring M, for the anchor-pallet suiiiciently to leave and set such pallet free, to rock by the operation or the uncoiliug of the coiled spring K, which causes the hammer to sound the alarm, as has been hercinbefore particularly explained. Q, a catch hung to bed-plate in suitable position to hold the set-screw, by the bent spring, M, against the anchor-pallet, G, or escapement ci' the ratchet-wheel, I.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the spring M, with its stop L, in combination with the escapement or pallet G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
I also claim the hook O, or its equivalent, in combination with the above, substantially as described and for the purpose specied.
GEO. A. COLTON.
