This invention relates generally to the class of furniture and pertains particularly to a combination bed and dresser construction.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel bed and dresser combination structure which is so designed that a large part of the toilet can be made while remaining in bed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination bed and dresser structure comprising a sliding unit supported by the bed side rails to be shifted to position under the bed or drawn out from such position, and having built therein a folding unit providing, when moved out to operative position, a dresser table over the top of the bed, together with conveniently arranged side units such as a radio receiver and a vanity box or till.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description of the same proceeds and the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it being understood, however, that the invention is not to be considered as limited by the specific illustration or description but that'such illustration and description constitute a preferred embodiment of the invention.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the structure embodying the present invention, showing the same in working or drawn out position in association with a bed frame which is set forth in broken lines.

Figure 2 is a sectional detail illustrating the connection of one side of the clothes hanger with a wall of the drawer or receptacle.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken transversely of the bed frame and through the dresser structure, the receptacle of the structure being withdrawn and the foldable vanity unit being raised to operative position. 1

Figure 4 is a sectional view corresponding to Figure 3 but showing the receptacle moved inwardly to inoperative position and the vanity unit in folded position therein.

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numerals l and 2 generally designate respectively the head and foot portions of a bed frame while the intermediate longitudinally extending connecting side rails are indicated by the numeral 3 these rails being employed for the support of the mattress and spring unit illustrated in broken lines in Figure 3 and indicated by the numeral 4.

In accordance with the present invention there are provided the two track rails 5 which are disposed transversely of the bed structure between the bottom edges of the bed side rails 3 as illustrated and are connected at their ends with the bed side rails 3 by suitable strap hangers or brackets 6. The opposing faces of these track rails have secured longitudinally thereof adjacent the bottom edges of the rails, the flanges l.

Disposed between the bed side rails 3 adjacent the lower edges thereof and lying across the tops of the track rails 5 is a dust proof cover or top board 8.

The numeral 9 generally designates a receptacle in the form of a tray or drawer which is of a width to fit snugly between the track rails and which has secured along the outer side of the side walls In adjacent the top edges, the track flanges I! which engage over and slide upon the tops of the flanges I. These flanges l and H may rest directly one upon the other or they may have any suitable anti-friction element interposed therebetween, which will cause the receptacle to slide in and out with the least amount of resistance.

The receptacle also has the front and rear walls [2 and I3 respectively and the bottom wall I4 so that when it is in position entirely beneath the dust cover 8 it will be tightly closed.

The receptacle 9 is divided longitudinally by the partition I4 and from the side of this partition nearest the foot of the bed structure'the area if: has therein the drawer I6 which is of a length approximately half the length of the area l5 as shown in Figure 1.

In the front of the area I5 is a clothes supporting rack indicated generally by the numeral I1 and comprising two lower side posts I8 one of which is pivotally attached to the partition 54 as indicated at l9 while the other one is pivotally attached to the adjacent side wall 10 of the receptacle as indicated at 20 so that the rack can be folded rearwardly and downwardly into the area I5. The upper end of each post 18 is connected by a hinge 21 with one side of a rectangular frame 22, at the top central portion of which is a hook 23 from which clothes hangers or other bodies can be suspended. The clothes hanger or carrier ll may be folded up when swung down into the area 25 so as to permit closing of the receptacle 9 and when the receptacle is open the rack can be extended to its fullest height so as to support articles of clothing in an easily accessible position.

Upon the side of the receptacle nearest the head piece the area 24 is formed between the partition wall l4 and the side of the receptacle and this area is transversely divided by the centrally cut out transverse partition wall 25. A portion of the area 24 to the rear of the partition wall 25 is indicated by the numeral 26 and may be employed for the storage of books or other articles.

The numeral 21 generally designates a vanity or dresser unit which is designed to be folded into the forward part of the area 24 between the partition wall 25 and the front wall l2 of the receptacle. This vanity unit 21 includes the two legs 28 which are pivotally supported within the rear part of thearea 24, one being preferably attached to the side wall i nearest the head piece I while the other is attached to the central partition wall l4. Supported by and between the upper ends of the legs 28 is a vanity till 29 having the top opening 30, and a radio receiving unit 3 I.

Attached by hinges 32 to the top ends of the legs 28 is a table 33 in the top of which is formed the recess 34 for the reception of the pivoted mirror 35, the face of which turns down into the recess 34 when not in use. As shown this table 33 is relatively long and is attached at one end to the posts 28 to extend at right angles from the upper ends thereof when the posts are upright. Thus the table may be disposed across the top of the bed for the convenient use of an occupant thereof. In order that the table may be properly maintained in horizontal position there is attached to the under side, adjacent the end remote from the legs 23, the substantially U-shaped combination foot and handle 36. This foot 36is pivotal-1y connected to the table as indicated at 31 so that it may be swung into a position perpendicular with the under side of thetable when the latter is to be used or it may beswung into a position parallel with the under side of the table, as shown in Figure 4, when the vanity unit is to be folded and oscillated outwardly and downwardly into the forward part of the area as illustrated in Figure 4.

As isclearlyl illustratedin Figure the combination foot and han'dleunit 36 has each of the side portions thereof in twotelescopically joined sections, the tubular portion or section being designated 360. while the other section which slidably engages in the tubular section is designated 36?). secured in adjusted relation by means of a thumb screw 38. By this arrangement the support'may be adjusted so as to take care of different thicknesses of mattresses and springs whereby .the table may always be maintained in horizontal position.

As will be readily appreciated the dresser unit may be constructed to be attached to any standard bed of wood or metal construction either by metal straps such as are illustrated or in any other suitable manner.

From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that the present invention provides a, convenient and compact dresser unit in which may be stored These telescopically joined sections are 4,

various articles of clothing and of toilet together with other articles such as books and the like which one may desire to use while resting in bed and, by the provision of the novel toilet unit 2'! the occupant of the bed may make up, write letters, read, or listen to the radio while reclining in bed, this being of particular importance and advantage to a person who is required to remain in bed because of illness or who wishes to lounge during a part of the day.

After the desired use is made of the dresser unit the entire structure may be conveniently stowed away beneath the bed where it will be entirely out of the way.

I claim:

1. A bed and dresser structure, comprising a bed frame having spaced parallel side rails, a drawer-like receptacle, means supporting such receptacle from said side rails for sliding movement into an inoperative position beneath the bed and to operative position in which it is drawn out beyond one side of the bed, and a vanity unit comprising a pair of spaced parallel legs pivotally attached at one end within the drawer to be folded downwardly into the same, a table top pivotally connected at one edge with the other ends of said legs to lie upon the top of the legs when the latter are folded in the drawer, and said legs and table top being so constructed and arranged that when the drawer is drawn outwardly and the legs are oscillated to vertical position the table top will be disposed in operative position over the top of the bed.

2. A structure as set forth, in claim 1 including a combined handle and leg support pivotally attached to one side of said table to rest upon the top of the bed when the table is disposed thereover.

3. A structure of the character stated comprising a bed having two spaced side rails, a pair of track rails disposed in spaced parallel relation and suspended from the bottom edges of the side rails, a drawer designed to position beneath the track rails, means forming a sliding connection between opposite sides of the drawer and the adjacent track rails whereby said drawer may be moved to opened position in which it extends beyond one side rail and to inoperative position in which it is positioned entirely boneath the bed, said drawer being centrally partitioned to form two longitudinal areas, a drawer slidably disposed within one area and having a length not more than half the length of the said one area, a foldable clothes support disposed adjacent the front end of the said one area to fold downwardly into the adjacent area, and a vanity unit comprising a pair of spaced parallel legs pivotally supported within the other
