My invention relates to a device for holding lipstick, said device so constructed as to make the lipstick adjustably available a used for application by the user.

Among the objects of my invention is to' create a simplified construction for the projection and retraction of a lipstick with relation to a case. To provide an adjustable construction which will permit the user to project a lipstick to the extent desired so that the same may be applied by the user free from any obstructing mechanism adjacent the projected lipstick and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawing preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevational view of my lipstick device in closed position; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of my lipstick device with the cap removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of Fig, 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional view of my cord passing through the control member with a knot therebelow; Fig. 6 is a detailed sectional view of my control member with corrugated walls and Fig. '7 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a side opening in the case.

The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a hollow body member I or case having side walls I I, a closed bottom I2 and an open top I3. A spring I4 is positioned within said body member ID, with the bottom portion of the spring I4 engaging the interior of the closed bottom I2. The upper portion of said spring I4 engages the bottom of a holder or cup I5. The cup I is slightly smaller in its dimensions than the hollow interior of body member II], so as to permit vertical movement with respect thereto. Said cup I5 is adapted to hold a lipstick I6 or the like.

A cap or closure IT for the open top I3 is provided, said cap adapted to be removably positioned by friction grip within depression I8 on the side walls I I adjacent their upper ends.

A cord, chain or other length of material I9 is attached at or adjacent to one end to said cup I5 and extends downwardly through spring I4 and opening 20 in bottom I2 (or the side wall as shown in Fig. '7), thence to cap H to which it is attached at or adjacent its other end.

In my preferred form cord I9 has a knot 2| positioned in cup I5 and of a larger size than opening 22 in cup I5 through which cord I9 below knot 2| passes. Cord I9 may also have a knot 32 positioned in cap I! beyond opening 23 therein.

When the device is in closed position, with cap I! covering the open top I3, cord I9 extends horizontally across the balance of the cap I! to one of the side walls I I and then vertically along said side walls to the outside of bottom I2 where it extends horizontally until it entersopening 20 thence vertically to cup I5.

A control member 24 which may be in the shape of a ball, bead or any other suitable form is carried on cord I9, below closed bottom I2. My control member 24 has an opening 25 therethrough.

The desired embodiment of my invention provides that the cord I9 extend through opening 25 with cord I9 of sufficient thickness and opening 25 of such corresponding dimensions that cord I9 engages walls 28 surrounding opening 25. Frictional engagement between cord I 9 and walls 28 is thus effected which is not overcome by the action of spring I 4 pulling cord I9 and forcing control member 24 against bottom I2. The frictional engagement is such that it may not be overcome by pressure greater than that of spring I4. The control member, of course, would be so positioned on cord I9 originally as to permit but a slight projection of the lipstick. Later the user by applying sufficient pressure to control member moves control member downwardly on cord I9 providing a greater length of cord between the control member and the cup and permitting greater projection of the lipstick. A knot 29 may be formed in cord I9 at a desired lower place thereon to stop control member from being moved therebelow and prevent so much cord above the control member as to. permit ejection of the cup I5 and also to prevent the control member from contacting cap I'I.

In order to pro-mote greater frictional contact I may provide my walls 28 with corrugations 39 opposite to the plane of the cord or provide walls 28 with roughened surfaces, to engage the strands of the cord I9.

After use of the lipstick the user in moving cap I1 to be placed on open top I3 in closed position, pulls cord I9 so that cup I5 is forced against the action of spring I4 back into the interior of the body member I0.

With my invention th user does not have to have the entire length of lipstick projected at the outset. Such a length would incur the likelihood of being broken off. By projecting only portions of the lipstick as needed, breakage is prevented, waste is saved and better application surface is provided.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A lipstick device comprising a hollow case having an open top, a bottom and an opening adjacent its lower portion, a holder adapted to hold lipstick movable within said case, a closure adapted to removably close said open top, a spring positioned between the bottom of said holder and the bottom of said base, a control member having an opening therethrough, a cord attached on one end to said closure, and extending from said closure through said opening in said control member, then passing through said opening in said case and attached at its other end to said holder, said control member positioned on said cord below said case, said cord of sufficient thickness and the walls surrounding the opening of said control member of corresponding dimensions so that said cord engages said walls and remains in fixed position with respect thereto by frictional contact, said control member originally positioned on said cord so that the length of cord between said control member and said holder permits the holder when the closure is removed and the holder is in receipt of upward pressure from said spring to move so that only a limited portion of the lipstick is exposed for application, said control member being slidable downwardly on said cord upon receipt of downward pressure thereon by the user greater than th pressure of said spring so as to provide greater lengths of said cord between said control member and said holder to permit greater upward movement of the spring actuated holder and correspondingly greater exposures of said lipstick, said cord adapted upon pressure from the user to pull said holder with its lipstick against the action of the spring back into said case, said cord or sufilcient length to permit said closure to be removably positioned to cover said open top.

A lipstick device comprising a hollow case having an open top, a bottom and an opening adjacent its lower portion, a holder adapted to hold lipstick movable within said case, a closure adapted to removably close said open top, a spring positioned between the bottom of said holder and the bottom of said case, a, control member having an opening therethrough, a cord attached on one end to said closure, and extending from said closure through said opening in said control member, then passing through said opening in said case and attached at its other end to said holder, said control member positioned on said cord below said case, said cord of suffioient thickness and the walls surrounding the opening of said control member of corresponding dimensions so that said cord engages said walls and remains in fixed position with respect thereto by frictional contact, said control member originally positioned on said cord so that the length of cord between said control member and said holder permits the holder when the closure is removed and the holder is in receipt of upward pressure from said spring to move so that only a limited portion of the lipstick is exposed for application, said control member being slidable downwardly on said cord upon receipt of downward pressure thereon bv the user greater than the pressure of said spring so as to provide greater lengths of said cord between said control member and said holder to permit greater upward movement of the spring actuated holder and correspondingly greater exposures of said lipstick, said cord having stop means positioned below said control member to stop said control member from movement therebelow, thereby, preventing a sufiicient length of cord above said control member to permit ejection of said cup from said case, said cord adapted upon pressure from the user to pull said holder with its lipstick against the action of the spring back into said case, said cord of sufiicient length to permit said closure to be removably positioned to cover said open top.

3. A lipstick device comprising a hollow case having an open top, a bottom and an opening adjacent its lower portion, a holder adapted to hold lipstick movable within said case, a closure adapted to removably close said open top, a spring positioned between the bottom of said holder and the bottom of said case, a control member having an opening therethrough, and corrugations on the inner walls surrounding said opening, a cord formed of strands, said cord attached on one end to said closure, and extending from said closure through said opening in said control member, then passing through said opening in said case and attached at its other end to said holder, said control member positioned on said cord below said case, said cord of sufiicient thickness and the walls surrounding the opening of said control member of corresponding dimensions so that the strands of said cord engage the corrugations of said walls and said cord remains in fixed position with respect thereto b frictional contact, said control member originally ositioned on said cord so that the length of cord between said control member and said holder permits the holder when the closure is removed and the holder is in receipt of upward pressure from said spring to move so that only a limited portion of the lipstick is exposed ior application, said control memher being slidable downwardly on said cord upon receipt of downward pressure thereon by the user greater than the pressure of said spring so as to provide greater lengths of said cord between said control member and said holder to permit greater upward movement of the spring actuated holder and correspondingly greater exposures of said lipstick, said cord adapted upon pressure from the user to pull said holder with it's lipstick against the action of the spring back into said case, said cord of suflicient length to permit said closure to be removably positioned to cover said open top.
