Description

'G. R. BARON FENCE POST Filed June 10, 1941 Nov. 30, 1943.
Altan/r11' Patented Nov. 30, 1943 UNITED 4STATES PATENT OFFICE FENCE POST George R. Baron, Santa Rosa, Calif.
Application June 10, 1941, Serial No. 397,471
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in fence posts, and particularly to reinforced concrete posts which are simpler and more rugged in construction, can be easily assembled and formed in the field, and which securely fasten the fence without injury thereto so as to permit of subsequent removal of the fence in an uninjured condition, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement of this character which has outstanding structural strength.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is an elevational view showing one side of a fence post arrangement in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an approximately central vertical transverse sectional View taken through the fence post.
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View taken through Figure l along the line 3 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, my improved fence post consists essentially of the core which is generally designated 5 and which consists of an I-beam of structurally adequate metal formed at vertical intervals with holes 'I in its web 6 which accept horizontal forwardly and rearwardly extending bolt accommodating pipes or tubes 9 which are welded in place as indicated by the numeral I on one side of the web 8. The bolt accommodating tubes 9 are preferably substantially equally spaced between the flanges II on the ends of the web 8. The core is incorporated in an upwardly tapering rectangular cross section body I2 of concrete or other suitable building composition or compound by pouring the compound around the core in a simple mold of the type commonly used in the field and requiring no special skillful operation. The core 5 assumes the centralized position indicated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, with the end of the longer arm I3 of the bolt accommodating tubes 9 extending flush with the rear surface I4 of the concrete body and with the shorter arms I 5 at the opposite side of the web S extending to communicate with the inner end of or apex of the V-shaped groove IG which extends centrally and vertically in the front surface I? of the concrete body.
In the arrangement shown bolts 25a have their beveled heads 2 Ia seated directly in the V-shaped grooves I6 with the bolts passing beyond the rear surface I4 of the body I2 and through a wooden block or strip 26 where the bolt is provided with the nut 23a to hold the block or strip in place, the fence wires or fence mesh 24a being secured to the lblock 26 by conventional staples 2l.
Although I have shown and described herein preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of my invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A fence post comprising an elongated hat-sided body having a longitudinally extending V-shaped groove in one side thereof, an I beam core embedded in said body in the longitudinal center of the same and having a web, a fence supporting beam extending longitudinally along a side of the body opposite to the grooved side flush against the same, and means to detachably attach said supporting beam to said body comprising tubes extending transversely through said body from the first-mentioned side thereof to said groove with ends opening into the apex portion of the groove, said tubes passing through said web and being welded thereto, and bolts extending through said tubes and supporting beam and having beveled heads countersunk in the groove and bearing against said ends of the tubes.
GEORGE R. BARON.
