Description
Nov. 19, 1943. s. A. HAMNETT MARKING DEVICE' Filed D30. 30, 1941 Fig.3
hf/ I/ INVENTOR.
1 A. HAN/V577 I E v Patented Nov. 9, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE V MARKING DEVICES V I Samuel AQHa mnett, Los Angeles, Calif.- 1 Application December 30,1941, Serial No. 424,885 Z zclaims. (c1. loll-28) 1 This invention relates to a marking apparatus.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved marking apparatus wherein movable type are employed and wherein novel means is provided for holding the type in the marker.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel type holder for a marker device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a type holding member wherein a novel sliding sleeve holds the type holding member in position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the marker body;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the jaw member;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44, Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an end view on an enlarged scale showing the sleeve member;
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 66, Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is a section taken on line 1-1, Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 88, Fig. 5.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view showing the type member on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 10 is a perspective view with parts broken away showing the marking device;
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary, central sectional view, showing the device with the jaw closed;
Fig. 12 is a view similar to Fig. 11 showing the jaw open; and I Fig. 13 is a sectional detail showing the spring pressed type engaging member.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, I have shown my invention as embodied in a marking device which is indicated generally at It). As shown the device includes a body member H which includes a handle l2 and a type holding portion l3.
The portion I3 includes a recess M which has parallel side walls l5 and an end wall l6. At the inner end of the recess I4 I provide opposed arcuate grooves H. In the end of the groove I1 I arrange a support member [8 the forward end edges of which are rounded as at I9 and are of a size so the body I3. The tongue tapers upwardlyas at 28 and thus projects above the plane of the body l3 as shown in Fig. 11. The jaw member includes a second bead 29 which is arranged to fit in a groove 30 in a type member 3|. The type member may have a character 32 on the end thereof such as a number or a letter.
When the jaw member is in the position shown in Fig. 11, the bead 29 fits the groove 3|] so that.
the type member is held in place. When the jaw member 22 is in the position shown in Fig. 12 the bead 29 is withdrawn from the groove 30 so that the type member 3| may be removed.
In order to provide means for operating the jaw member I provide a sleeve 33 which includes a top 34, a bottom 35 and ends 36. The top is provided with a slot 31 best shown in Fig. 7 and which includes a rear portion 38 and wider front portion 39. The portion 38 receives the tongue 26 on the jaw 22 when the sleeve is in advanced position. When the sleeve is in its rear position the tongue 26 enters the portion 39 of the slot. This front portion 39 has a bevelled face 40 which engages the tongue 26 and forces the iimer end of the tongue downwardly thus rocking the jaw about the bead 25 to the position shown in Fig. 12.
In order to hold the sleeve in its forward position I provide the body I3 with a hole which includes a large upper portion 4|, a reduced intermediate portion 42, a second intermediate further reduced portion 43, and an enlarged lower portion 44. The hole receives a pin member which includes a head and a shank 46. The head 45 has a sliding fit in the hole portion 4| and the shank 46 has a sliding fit in the hole portion 43. A collar 41 engages the shank 46 and is disposed in the hole portion 44 andis secured to the shank to hold the parts assembled. A spring 48 surrounds the shank 46 and urges the head 45 upwardly where it is in the path of movement of the sleeve 33.
To move the sleeve the head portion 45 is depressed so that the sleeve may be moved rearwardly. As the sleeve member moves rearwardly the bevelled portion 40 engages the bevelled portion 28 of the tongue 26 on the jaw member and rocks the jaw member to the position shown in Fig. 12 in which position the type members 3| may be inserted or removed after which the sleeve is moved to its advanced position whereupon the head 45 of the pin member is urged outwardly by the spring 48 thus preventing accidental movement of the sleeve.
In order that all the type members may be.
urged together I show type holding portion l3 as provided with an aperture 50 in which a ball 5| is arranged. The ball is urged inwardly by a relief spring 52 which is disposed in a slot 53 in the type holding portion.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel marking device which can be economically manufactured and which is sturdily constructed and is highly eflicient for its intended purpose.
I Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a. marking device, a body member including a handle portion and a type holding portion, the type holding portion having a recess adapted to receive a type member, a jaw member pivotally mounted upon said type holding portion, said jaw member having a, rearwardly projecting ceiving said jaw tongue, the wall of the sleeve defining said groove having a bevelled end adapted to depress the tongue when the sleeve is moved to one position and means to normally prevent rearward movement of the sleeve to said one position.
2. In a marking dvice, a body member including a handle portion and a type holding portion, the type holding portion having a recess, a jaw member pivotally mounted in said recess, said jaw member having a rearwardly projecting tongue, said tongue having a bevelled face, a sleeve slidable on said type holding portion and engaging said jaw member, the inner wall of the sleeve havinga bevelled portion adapted to engage the bevelled face, on the tongue and depress the tongue when the sleeve is moved to one position andmeans. tonormally prevent movement of the sleeveuto said one position.
