The flaps 9 and I1 are similarly bent into similar loverlapping relation. The overlapping portions of aps Ill and I6 are connected by adhesive or other connecting means, and the overlapping portions of flaps 9 and I1 are similarly connected. Flap Ill is now turned to abut flap IIJ. Any suitable portions of flaps I0 and I4, such asv their top portions, are connected by adhesive or by other means. The flap I4 vcan be dimensioned so as to overlap flap I5, or so that the bttomf edge of flap III can abut orbe a little above thetop edge of flap I6. If desired, flap I6 can partially overlie andv overlapiiap I8. rFlap Scan-'overlap flap I1, or nap I1 can overlie flap 9. i i f V The adjacent and abutting portions of the flaps Hand I8 are connected by adhesive or other means,-so that flap I4 closes a part of the openingin nap IIlwhich is formed by the through- Aand-through cut-lines 20a. Flap I8 is turned and connected by adhesive or the like to ilaps I0 and I6, and fla-p 23 issimilarly turned'and connected to ilaps 9 `and I1; -Front wall Sis now turned and connected to iiap I8, leaving the gate I9 free, and rear wall 1 is turned and connected to iiap 23, thus completing the carton. The flaps I4 and 23 may be unconnected by adhesive to flaps 9 and I1. s
The gate I is thus freely slidable in a frame of the flap I8, and flap I is located between gate I9 and ilap IIl. rIhe front wall 5 overlies the gate I9, and the small hole .is .aligned with'the large hole II, sothat said holes have a kcommon axis.v
Both holes Sand `II are aligned with the frame which is formed in flap i8, by the cut-,lines 20a.
The tab 2| is integral with base 2S. The line 2Ia may bea through'-and-throughcut-liner or it may be a line along which the kblank is only weakened without being cut .through-and-through, as
by scoring, so that the tab 2I may be pried out of base 20, and said tab 2l is then turnable until it is perpendicular tobase 20. The cout-out 5a in front wall 5 facilitatesl the manipulation of gate I9. The gate I9v can be releasably sealed at the factory, after the carton has been lled and closed. This can be done by an extension tab of front wall 5, which 'can be detachably connected to wall 5 along the arcuate line of cut-out 5a. In such case, the line 5a is a line of scoring. Said sealing extension tab can beireleasably conaecomo closure disks can be forced inwardly into the carton by slight pressure, thus opening the front wall 5 and the flap I0 at the openings 6 and II.
The hinge line 8, by means of which said gatebase 20 is hingedly connected to the member 2, is indicated by the reference letter H in Figs. l, 2
' and5.
and in Fig. 5, and back to the closing position When the carton is shipped, the finger-hold tab 2I is coincident with the side Wall 2. In order to use the'gate,` the nger-hold 2I is `turned from the inoperative position which is shown in Fig. 1, to the operative position which is shown in Fig. 2. The gate I9 is readily slidable from the closing position which is shown in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 4, to the opening position which is shown in Fig. 2
which is shown in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that the carton has successive faces, each pair of successive faces being in angular relation. In this particular embodiment, successive faces are perpendicular to each other. A selected face of the carton has a plurality ci walls. In the particular embodiment, said selected face of the carton has the walls I0, I8 and 5. rlhe innermost wall I0 and the outermost wall 5 fare provided with aligned openings. A gate is cut out of the material of the intermediate Wall I8. Said gate has an integral base which is turnably connected to a wall of the carton at theface of 'thecarton which immediately succeeds said selected face.
While I prefer to provide three walls at the selected pouring face of the carton, the invention is not limited to this feature.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing fromhits spirit.
I claim: Y
1. A carton which has a pouring face, said pouring face having an inner Wall and an outer' wall and an intermediate wall which is located between said inner wall and said outer wall, said inner wall and said outer wall having aligned pouring openings, said intermediate wall having aout-out, said Vcut-out being aligned with said pouring openings, a gate located in said cut-out and movable relative thereto, said gate being movable to an operative position in which a part of said gate islocated between said pouring openings, said gate being also movable to an inoperative position in which it is spaced from said openings, said'gate being integral with a gate-base, said gate-base being turnably connected to a wall of said carton which is inclined to and which is integral with said intermediate wall.
2. A carton which comprises an integral blank which is folded into carton` shape, said blank nected by adhesive to side Wall 2, without cond necting the same to gate I S or base 20.
The reference numeral IBa indicates a longitudinal strip of the flap I8 which is free from' the frame which is dened by the cut-lines 2a. While I have shown the ybla-nicas perforated at the vrholesv 6 landat Il, it is Ato be understood that in actual practice the front wall 5u and theL ilap IU are imperforate Vand they are provided with score lines at the edgesof the openings 6 and II, so that said scorelines denne closure` disks which close said openings 5 .and II, when the carton is nlledand closed at the plant, These.
comprising a front wall member which constitutesa front wall of the assembled carton, said front wall member, having a pouring opening, said carton also comprising a* flap and a side-wall member, said iiap vbeing located adjacent to and inwardly of said front wall of the assembled carton, the side-Wall member being immediately adjacent to and being angularly disposed to said flap in the assembled carton, said flap and said side-Wall member being cut through and through along two opposed cut lines and along an additional intermediate cut line, said cut lines being spaced wholly from the edges of said flap and of said side-wall member, said intermediate cut line being located only in said flap, the material of said nap whichis located between said opposed cut lines and said intermediate outline compris.
g 2,330,926 f 3 ing a gate which is movable to a closing position at which it obstructs said opening, the material of said side-wall member which is located between said opposed cut lines comprising a base for said gate, said base being bendable relative to the side-wall member, said base being coincident with the side-wall member when the gate is in the closed position.
3. Adevice according to claim 2, in which said gate and said base are bent relative to each other at an edge line of said carton, said base being cut to provide a inger tab which is bendable relative to said gate andrelative to said base along said respective edge line, whenthe gate is the closed position.
