Objects of this-invention areto provide a novel methodofcement sole attachment whereby. the
above-indicated disadvantages-of .priorv methods will be avoided.v I f' 1.11 In one aspect" the invention comprises a corresponding portions or. theoutsolef-This treatment, being carried on about the periphery of the shoe andfsole, results in the firm 'attachment of the sole to .the' shoe, obviates the necessity'of tacking the shoe and solevv together and eliminates the use of shoe supports or. lasts .as
well as" pressure-applying. pads; Since; the ce-' ment at thetime of attachment is incapable of flowing under pressure; the uppers remain clean, resultingfin. saving. time and improved wc-rk'man'shiptr; ,v Y g Thewapparatus adapted for practicing the method may comprise a 'reciprocating plunger operated 'to deliver blows. upon the treadface of the outsole and a horn arranged to support the insole at thepoint Where the blow is delivered bythehammer, meansbeing provided for raising the horn to bring the work" into the field of action of-thehammer. "Preferably the hammeris driven positively and the horn is provided: with a yielding mechanism whereby a slight. depression of the work is permitted, the. pressureof the hammer being adapted:to be applied during method of cement-attachingsoles td5shoes1which consists in providing a shoe and its: 'solerwith pressure-responsive cement on their attaching faces, locating the sole. on the shoe;.supporting a localized area'only of the inner face of .the insole, applying pressure to 'a corresponding 'area.:at,- the opposite side of the outsoletocause .adhee,
sion-of the outsoleto the shoe in said area-"and' repeating the operation atsuccessive localized areas about the periphery of the. shoe. 1 This application of pressure to force the insole and outsole together at localized areas about :the periphery of 1 the shoe results in a .veryfirm attachment of the sole to the shoe'when a strong cementis employed. A suitable cement for the purpose is a chloroprene cement such as that disclosed in Letters" Patent of theUnited States No. 2,061,296, granted'Novembe name of Walter H. Wedger. After cement of this kind is applied to the attaching faces, of the shoe and sole and allowed to dry for a short time, it reaches a condition in which, while dry to the touch, it will stick when pressed upon a similarly'cemented surface. With the shoe and sole in this conditior'rthe sole may be readily -spotted on the shoe, the preliminary sticking of the cementedsurfaces being sufficient to hold the sole in position. The shoe is then treated by applying heavy pressure to localized portion of the margin of the insole inside the shoe an r 17, 1936, in the depression of 1 the "support. and its releases- In thev drawing," L Fig. l-isaside elevationofan apparatus suitable for use-in pract'icing my improved method; 7 Fig. 2 isi'a perspective viewof an outsole'prepared forattachmentito'a shoe;

tion lli'of an upper 18 which rests upon an insole Y 2B is roughened and coated with cement likethat on the outsole. After the cement has dried for a short time, the sole Iii is located on the overlasted portion iii of the upper of the shoe and causedto adhere by pressure of the fingers or a few taps of a hammer. - is an eccentric pin 44 which engages, a transverse slot formed in a plunger dimoun'tedfor vertical movement whereby the plunger is. caused to be positively reciprocated. The horn 24; has a stem 48 mounted for vertical movement in. the frame 28. The stem. 48. is hollow andcontainsa spring.

The lower end. of the. spring rests against the head of a stud. which is arranged to slide througha plug. 58. threaded into thelower end of the stem 48. Connected to. the Stu-(1,56 is a block 60 towhich is pivoted at B2 angle lever having arms 64, 66. Thearm. 54. is. con.-

A treadle spring 82 connected between the treadle and a pin fixed in the frame serves to raise the treadle to insure that the toggle 64, 68 will be broken and the rod raised to disconnect the clutch when the treadle is r ea e Having thus described my, invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. That improvement in methods of cementat aching soles to shoes in which the marginal portion, of. the upper is, lasted inwardly over an insole substantially in parallel'relation thereto w h consists in applying a pressure-responsive cement'to the overlasted margin of the upper and to the attaching face of an outsole, locating the outsole. on tthebottom of the shoe, and then apto the treadie. dl'byimeans of ayieldingly extenr sible link comprising a .rod 12. pivoted'to. the treadle and a link I4 pivotedtothearmfifin rod 12 passes freely through an offset 16. on the link 14.
