LAMP-SUPPORTING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,761, dated September 28, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY ROELOFS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp'Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to brackets or arms for supporting the fountains of coal-oil lamps; and it consists, mainly, of a device, described hereinafter, for securely holding the fountain and permitting its ready withdrawal from the support.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a bracket and fountain-holder constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of part of the bracket and hanger-plate, and Fig. 3 perspective views of the lamp-fountain part of the bracket and spider for supporting the said fountain.

A is the bracket, B the hanger, and D the fountain or reservoir, of the lamp. The plate B is screwed to a wall or other fixed object, and has a vertically-elongated slot, b, and sockets d, one at the upper, and the other at the lower, end of the slot. To these sockets is adapted the vertical bar 0, secured to or form ing part of the bracket, which can thus be turned laterally to any position desired.

The outer end of the bracket A has a threaded pin adapted to the internally-threaded opening in the hubf of a spider, E, which has radial arms g, (four in the present instance,) turned up at the ends, so as to form vertical portions 1', which constitute the lateral retainers of the lamp'fountain, the lower portion or cylindrical base of the latter fitting snugly within the said vertical portions of the arms. While the fountain is more securely retained by these arms of the spider than by the ordinary sockets of lamp-brackets and chandeliers, or by a spider with hooked ends, the fountain can be readily detached by raisin g it vertically from the spider.

I form in the base portion of the fountain vertical grooves adapted to and coinciding with the vertical ends iof the arms of the spider, the width of which ends, in respect to that of the grooves m, is such that the lamp can be applied to or removed from the spider in a vertical direction by a slight effort; but any accidental pressure applied to one side of the fountain will be effectually resisted by at least two of the ends 2' of the spider-arms, which will bind in the grooves, and thus prevent the detaching of the fountain.

The spider may, if desired, be applied to the lamp-holding arms of chandeliers, or may be constructed for application to an ordinary gasburning bracket or arm.

At the lower edge of the base of the fountain there is a strengthening-rib, and the portions of the aforesaid grooves which extend through this rib are flared, so as to facilitate the adjustment of the fountain to the spider, the arms of the latter being made wedgeshaped in order to still further facilitate the operation.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The within-described fountain-retaining spider, the same consisting of a central hub, f, constructed for attachment to abracket or arm, and having radial arms 9, with upturned ends 71, the inner faces of which are vertical and parallel, and adapted to embrace the base of the fountain, whereby the latteris retained laterally, but is free to be removed in a vertical direction from the spider, as set forth.

2. The fountain having a base provided with vertical grooves, in combination with the spider having arms with vertical ends adapted to the said grooves, substantially as specified.

3. The lamp-fountain D, having a base a, a rib at the bottom of the base, and vertical grooves, the portions of which extending through the said rib are flared, as and for the purpose described.
