BLACKlNG-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,585, dated September 21, 1880. Application filed May 19, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND LORENZO WOOD,Of Eastland City, in the county of Eastland and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Blacking-Brush, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to that class of blacking-brushes which have the dauber and blacking-box on top; and my improvements thereon will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

' Figure l is a perspective view of my improved brush, the blacking-box and its holder being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a top View, part of the box being broken away to show the elevating-springs.

A'is the body of the brush, provided, in the usual manner, with the handle B. A little in rear of the middle of the back of the brush is the cup 0, for holding a blacking-box, D. In the bottom of the cup are springs E, for raising the blacking-box as the surface of the black- 2 5 ing therein is lowered by use. A set-screw, F, retains the box in its adjusted position.

It is obvious that instead of :the springs E elevatingscrews may be used.

At the front end of the top or back of the 0 brush is a post, H, and ata suitable distance behind the post is the bracket G, to the top of which is hinged the disk K, upon which is secured the rotatable circular brush I, having the handle L, by which it may be rotated.

The post H has a spring at the top for engaging with a slot in the front end of the disk, by which means the circular brush is held in the proper position for applying the blacking; A similar post, N, and spring 0 are placed in 40 the rear of the box-holding cup, by means of which the circular brush may be secured over the blacking-box to act as a lid therefor.

Latches or other fastening devices may be used instead of springs.

The lid of the blacking-box being removed, the brush-plate K is thrown back, bringing the circular brush I in contact with the moistened surface of the blacking. The brush is then rotated until it is sufficiently coated with blacking, when it is thrown forward and secured in position for use by the spring M.

Among the many advantages resulting from the described construction are evenness of wear of the bristles of the brush, economy of blackin g, absence of spattering while extracting the blacking from the box, convenience in substituting the circular brush as a lid for the box in case of loss of the box-lid, and the savin g of time in lookin g for a blacking-brush and a blacking-box separately.
