Figure:.5 is a. view of. the shaft onwhich the spoolis mounted. Figure 6 isrrazperspective-view of the spool. Figure 7 is, a perspective view of the paper retainer bar.
Referringxim det'aikto the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates the main body of the device which consists in the substantially parallel sided longitudinal walls 6 whose opposite ends are curved in accordance with the contour of the curved ends 1 and 8 which are secured to and between the curved ends of the side walls. The space between the ends 1 and 8 and between the side walls 6 is closed by the swingable front cover which is generally designated I0 and which itself has side walls II to meet the upper edges '9 of the main body side walls 6, with the web l2 between the side walls II and attached to their upper edges, curved downwardly at its opposite ends to merge into the curved end walls I and 8, as indicated in Figure 3 of the drawings,
Suitable hinge means I3 arranged atthe inner sides of the wall portions [2 and 8 swingably mount the frontcover' lnito enable it to bei swung: to the open position illustrated in Figure l'xof the drawings; Adjacent the opposite endsof the" front cover H]: is a rotatable catch button II which'h'a's'a shank passingthrough theweb I2 and equipped at the inner side of the web IT with a projecting finger l5 adapted to engage under the front edge of the curved end wall of the body 5 to retain the front cover in a'closed: position when desired? front cover I0 iii-being opened exposes" not only I the calendar cards: l8; and: the cigarette retainer: l9: and the" cigarette compartment torbe reached through forwardly swinging-the plate? lSibutfthe opening ofthe.- cover' exposes-(the: writing; paper roll which is'gcnera'Hy-designated: 24 and which consists of an ordinary roll of writing paper such as used in commercial calculating and adding machines, the same being wound from one roller to the other, located within opposite ends of the main body 5. A tearing arm 25 is hinged at the left hand side of the main body by a journal 26 receiving the bight portion of a U-shape 21 whose legs are anchored in a'dumrny wheel form 28 located at the upper left hand corner of the main body. A spring arrangement 29 cooperates with a hinge device to keep the arm 25 normally down-pressed in the position in which it is shown in Figure 1 of the drawings and in which its opposite extremity rests, as indicated by the numeral 30, on the edge of the opposite side wall 6 of the body 5 at a point just above or coincident with the upper edge of the writing table the upper surface of the writing table 3| from which it declines toward the spool 34 which is mounted on the winding shaft 35 which terminates in a winding wheel 36 which may or may not have the crank handle 31 suitably attached thereto at an eccentric point as indicated by the numeral 38. The shaft 35 has a stop collar 39 and inwardly of it a key 40 to cooperate with the semi-circularly cut-out portion 4| on the adjacent end of the spool 34 is non-rotatably connecting the shaft 35 and the spool 34. The spool 34 is provided with a longitudinal slot 42 into which the end of the paper 24 is inserted in order to wind the paper upon the spool 34 by rotating the winding wheel 36. The shaft 35 is journaled through the side walls 6 of the main body 5 at the upper part thereof as seen in Figure l of the drawings, with the wheel 36 on the right hand side for easy operation,
The opposite end of the main body accommodates the paper roll as it comes from the factory or distributor on a spool 34 which is, in turn, mounted on a shaft 35 which is journaled in the side walls 6 of the main body. Spring-pressed retarding means located within the curved end 8 of the main body press against the supply roll which is generally designated 44 to prevent the same from unwanted unrolling of the paper therefrom. Another friction retarding element 45 is similarly arranged in the opposite end of the main body to engage the gradually accumulating paper on the spool 34. Underneath the tearing arm 25 is a round stationary guide shaft 46 over which the paper glides from one roller to the other. I
A winding wheel 36' is affixed to the shaft 35' at the lower end of the main body as shown in Figure l of the drawings for winding-and rewinding purposes. a The bottom or back 41 of the main body is fully open between its sidewalls 6 between the points 48 and 49 to provideaccess to compartments behind the writing table 3|, the said opening being closable by the rear cover which is generally designated 49 and which has a knob equipped latch 50 for enabling rotating the latch 5| into and out of position to hold the rear cover closed, On the inner side of the rear coveris a drawings.
channeled frame 52 which holds a mirror 53 in place which is accessible to view when the cover 49 is in the open position. A hinge arrangement 53 swingably connects the rear cover 49 with the edge of the mentioned opening in the back or bottom 41 of the main body. A shallow transverse wall 54 met by a longitudinal dividing wall 55 provides two laterally separated compartments for accommodating such articles as the head and'the razor blades of a safety razor, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2 of the A deeper transverse wall 56 spaced from the wall 54 provides a compartment for the reception of the handle of the safety razor or the like, and the space above the wall 56 and bounded at its to by the wall 32 providesspace p at the lower end of the table 3| as indicated in Figures 3 and 1 of the drawings. One end of the bar 51 is provided with a handle 58 while the opposite end is provided with a loop 59 which is located atright angles to the bar and acts as an abutment against the outside of the left hand wall 6 when the adjacent 'end of the bar is inserted in a notch 60 formed in the upper edge of the side walls 6, with the opposite end of the bar inserted in a similar notch 6| formed in the opposite side wall 6, with the handle 58.also acting as an abutment, taking advantage of the flexibility of the walls 6, to hold the retainer bar 51 in place to insure the papers being held in smooth writing condition on the table 3|.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of the invention thereto, except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A device of the class described comprising an elongated rectangular body including side and end walls, respectively, and a bottom, a shorter rectangular wall structure in said body arising from said bottom and forming with said side and end walls end walls in said body adapted to contain paper reels for feeding a memorandum strip from one to the other, said wall structure including a flat top forming a table over which said strip may be fed for writing thereon, and a turtle back hinged cover for said body forming when closed a space above the flat top for storage of articles therein, said cover having a swinga'ble spring pressed plate therein coacting with the top of the cover to clam articles therebetween.
