Description

J. W. LILLY. Door Mata No. 232,408. 'Patnted Sept. 21, |ss0.
WITNESSES INVENTOR FETERS, PHOTO-LITHDGFIAPNER, WASHINGTON. n c.
UNITED" STATES A PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS W. LILLY, OF BINGHAMTON,ASS1GNOR TO LEWIS LILLY, or CASTLE GREEK, NEW YORK.
DOOR-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,408, dated September 21, 1880.
Application filed December 8, 1879.
To all whofit it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS W. LILLY, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Door-Mats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of plan view of frame and movable scrapingplatform of my door-mat. Fig. 2 is a side elevation or sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mat and scraper complete. Fig. is a perspective view of the frame and pan. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pan, scraping-platform, and one of the mats.
In the drawings, A designates the frame, made of cast or wrought iron or other material, inside of and across which is placed centrally the pan, made of sheet metal or other 2 5 material. Directly over this is placed the movable iron scrapingplatform G, which has a series of thin-edged bars, 0 c, which act as scrapers when a shoe is passed across their surface, the dirt falling into the pan below. As often as required the scraping-platform can be removed. and the pan taken out and emptied.
The advantages of this scraping-platform 0, whether used alone or connected with an ordinary mat, with or without the frame, are 5 many, it being an entirely new feature in the construction .of door-mats.
D D designate flanges projecting from the sides of scraping-platform, for the purpose of holding in place securely the mats E E, which 4.0 rest firmly on wooden supports which are fitted inside of and across the ends of frame A at bottom portion of same.
F designates a depression in the frame A, on front side of the same, forming a scraper 5 for removing dirt from the shank of a shoe.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The frame A, which inoloses the pan B grating G, and mat or mats E, surrounding and forming a secure fastening for the same.
2. The frame A, provided with the depressions F and with slots or notches, in combination with scrapingplatform O.
3. The combination, with frame A, of the scraping-platform 0, provided with flanges D D, the mat or mats, and the pan, as and for the purpose described.
4. The removable pan B, formed as shown, in combination with the frame A and scraper 0, whereby the pan is adapted to receive the dirt from the shoes, all constructed and arranged .to operate in the manner set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JULIUS W. LILLY.
