Description

(Model-.)
J-[ R. McGALL. Barrel and Boxflaster.
Patented Aug. 31,1880
N. PETERS. FHOTOiITHOFRAPl-IER, WASHINGTON. D. C
UNITED STATES JAMES R. MOOALL, OF SCHOOLCRAFT, MICHIGAN.
PATENT OFF CE.
. BARREL AND BOX CASTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 231,829, dated August 31, 1880.
- Application filed April 3,1880. (Model) coinpanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a barrel and box caster, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is aside elevation of a barrel with my casters applied thereto, showing said casters from the ends. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the side of the caster. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the caster. Fig. 4 is a section showing a barrel provided with casters and turning on a pivot.
A represents a semicircular or curved bar or saddle having its ends turned upward to form hooks B B, which are to fit under the chines of a barrel or box. Near each end of the saddle A is an outwardly-projecting stud, O, 011 which the wheel D is placed, said wheel being prevented from coming off by riveting the end of the stud or otherwise, as may be deemed most convenient. In the center of the saddle is an inwardly-projecting tooth or prong, a, as seen particularly in Figs.3 and 4.
For moving a barrel or box in any direction two of these saddles are used-on opposite sides-the chines of the barrel resting in the hooks B, and the weight of the barrel causes the tooth to to enter the side thereof and keeps the saddle in place.
For barrels the saddles A will be made concave or bent to suit the circular form of the barrel, while for boxes they may be made flat, and the studs 0 will project at different angles.
When it is desired to simply turn a barrel around, one saddle, with its wheels, is used, and on the opposite side of the barrel to the under side is attached a hooked strap, F, having a downwardly-projecting shouldered pin, h, which is inserted in and rests upon a short hollow post, I, secured on the floor. This forms a pivot on which the barrel may be turned around.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The saddle A, formed with the hooks B B, and provided with the tooth a, studs 0, and wheels D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with a box or barrel, the saddle A, with wheels D D, the hooked strap F, with pin it, and the hollow post I, substantially as and for-the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of March, 1880.
JAMES R. MGOALL.
