N-PEI'ERS, PHOTO-L|TNQGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE M. ARNOLD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EDWARD 0. MILES, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICINE, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,747, dated August 31, 1880, Application filed January 12, 1880 To all whom it may concern Be it know u that I, GEORGE MILEs ARNOLD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in ven trd a new and Improved Implement for Administering Medicine and Nourishn'ient speciinclining the bowl.
Arepresents a bowl, of convenient size and open at the top. From the bottom of the bowl A extends a stem, B, which is bent to pass up along the side of the bowl, and then extends outward with adown wardinclination, as shown in the figure.
With this construction the medicine or other liquid to be given to the patient is placed in the bowl A, and the end of the stem B is inserted in the invalids mouth. Then by a slight effort the invalid draws the contents of the bowl A into his mouth.
1n the case of an infant a rubber nipple or mouth-piece, O, is attached to the end of the stem B, to be inserted in the infants mouth, so that he may suck the contents of the bowl A into his mouth.
With this improvement medicine, nourishment, and drink can be administered to invalids too Weak to be moved, or whom it might be dangerous to move, without any danger of spilling the liquid.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A device for conveying medicine or liquid nutriment to a person in a recumbent position, consisting of an open-topped vessel, A, provided with a rigid stem, B, starting from an open bottom, passing up the side to about the top, and then bent down at an acute angle un-- til the end comes about on a level with the bottom of vessel, as shown and described.
