PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT FOERSTE, OF BERLIN, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
LEAF-SUPPORT FOR ALBUMS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,661, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed July 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FoERs'rE, a citizen of Prussia, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom'of Prussia and Empire of Germany, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Supports for Albums; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simpleand effective device for preventing the separation of the binding from the cover or back of an album or other book.
Ordinarily when an album is placed in an erect or upright position the weight of the leaves or filling will cause such a strain to be brought to bear upon the binding as to cause a separation or tearing away of the binding from the cover.
, The present invention obviates this defect or difficulty; and it consists in angular plates attached to the inside of the coverin such manner that the leaves are firmly supported thereby, so that their weight will exert no injurious strain upon the binding.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l. is a perspective view of an album having my leaf-supporting devices applied thereto. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached views of the latter. Fig. 5 is a modified form of plate.
As clearly shown in the drawings, arightangled bent plate, A, is secured to the inside of each cover of the album, so as to support the leaves constituting the filling at or near the outer or free ends thereof. In other words, it may be said that a supporting-plate, A, is
(No model.) Patented in Germany July 13, 1878.
located at each of the outer lower corners of the album.
The supporting-plate is a plain piece of metal 5 or other rigid material bent into right-angular shape, and it is attached to the inside of the album-cover by means of glue, cement, rivets, or other suitable means. The support proper is that portion of the plate which projects from not interfered with by the supporting-plates.
In the present instance the leaf-support is a plain right-angular plate; but I also propose to extend the attaching portion of the support below the angle or bend thereof, so as to give additional strength thereto, this feature being shown in Fig. 5 of drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy A book-cover provided with right-angular supporting-plates applied to'the inside of the cover and projecting inwardly or lapping over the leaves or filling, so as to support the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
ALBERT FOERSTE.
