Application November 10, 1941, Serial No. 418,440
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as
amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) 2 Claims.
The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves and more especially to a glove for use by soldiers or hunters and others that require the unhampered use of the fore or index finger.
Therefore, an important object of the invention is to provide a glove having means incorporated therein to permit the wearer to project his fore or index finger from the interior of the glove to the exterior thereof for use in triggering a rifle or for any other purpose which requires the unhampered use -of the wearers fore or index nger. t
Another object of the invention is to provide means for covering the opening in the glove so that the opening will be entirely closed and the entire hand will be protected from the weather.
In all previously known gloves or mittens that have means incorporated therein for promoting vthe efficiency of the wearer in performing the above-mentioned operations, difficulties have been encountered in fully closing the opening of the glove so that the wearers hand is fully protected.
Since it is an important feature of any glove or mitten of this type to keep the hands Warm as well as to bring efliciency to a maximum,
where the handling of guns and other implements is involved, it is thought that the present invention has taken a long step toward providing a glove that will meet all the requirements necessary to produce a perfect or nearly perfect glove for the above-mentioned purposes.
When using this glove in extremely cold climates, a wooler inner mitten, having a separate finger incorporated therein, that is adapted to cover the wearers fore or index finger, is worn. In this manner the utility of the glove is preserved and means are provided to insure the use of the fore or index finger and at the same time insure the wearer of sufficient protection against the weather.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of features of construction, arrangement and operation of parts which will appear in the specification and be finally pointed out in the claims.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown it will be understood that slight changes in form and minor details of construction may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters and references in the several figures indicate identical parts:
Fig. 1 represents the improved glove in elevation, looking on the palm side, with the opening exposed and the flaps turned out.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, showing the fastener used to adjust the wrist portion of the glove above the wrist.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the flaps and reinforcing means.
Fig. 4 represents the blanks from which the improved glove is constructed.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the glove showing the aps closed.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the improved glove.
Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the woolen mitten used inside the improved glove, embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, I0 ndicates the improved glove which can be formed of any water-repellant material or the like and fashioned in` the customary manner with a front body portion II, rear body portion I2, wrist portion I3 and thumb portion I4.
The front body portion II is formed with an opening I5 through which the fore or index finger of the wearer may be projected. The opening I5 has a double row of stitching around the periphery thereof to protect the edge from becoming frayed. Flap I5 having a female fastener I 'I thereon and flap I8 having a male fastener I9 thereon, are provided to close the opening I5 to protect the hand of the wearer from cold weather. A piece of reinforcing material 20 is provided at the upper ends of the aps to prevent the flaps from being torn from the front portion of the glove.
It will, of course, be understood that the wearer may project his fore or index finger through the opening by merely bending his finger forward after the fastener onthe flaps has been opened. After the glove has been placed on the hand and it is found necessary to restrict the wrist portion I3, this may be accomplished by adjusting straps 2| and buckle 22 secured to the Wrist portion I3 on the rear portion I2.
In severe weather, when more Warmth is required, a woolen mitten 23, having a fore or index finger portion 24 and a thumb portion 25 may be slipped on the hands of the wearer before the wearer inserts his hand into the improved glove I. Since this mitten 23 has a 55 separate fore or index nger portion 24 no diniculty would be presented in using the glove l0 in the contemplated manner.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a very simple, inexpensive glove has been provided which possesses unusual advantages in the field for which it has been developed.
It is thought, therefore, that the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, will clearly illustrate the details of construction and mode of opera-tion of the invention without any further extended de-V scription.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A glove comprising a back portion, a pahn portion joined thereto, said palm portion having an opening therein lying in a longitudinal plane parallel with the edges of said palm portion, flaps joined to the glove along the periphery of said opening, one of said flaps having a female fastener positioned on the lower end thereof, the other of said flaps having a male fastener positioned on the lower end thereof, said fasteners adapted to coact in such a manner that the flaps Will normally tend to keep said opening closed while allowing the projection of the fore or index finger of the wearer.
2. A-,glove comprising a back portion, a palm portion joined thereto, a longitudinal opening in said palm portion, flaps joined to the glove along the periphery of said opening, whereby the flaps will normally tend to keep said opening closed, a male fastener attached to one of said flaps and a female fastener attached to the other of said flaps to keep said flaps closed, when the forenger of the wearer has been withdrawn within the glove, and a reinforcing means positioned at the junction of said flap to prevent said flaps from ripping from said glove.
