UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HAMPE, OF STAUNTON, ILLINOIS.
RUNNING-GEAR FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,562, dated August 24, 1880.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HAMPE, of Staunton, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling-Poles for Spring-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bottom view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section on line as m, Fig. of a spring-wagon with my improved coupling-pole. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the coupling which connects the front and rear part of the pole. Fig. 5 is a sectional side View of a wagon with a modified form of coupling, and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section of the same online 51 y, Fig. 5.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved coupling-pole for buggies and spring-wagons, which is specially adapted for the heavier class of Wagons used by farmers and others.
By the use of the improved coupling-pole the wagon is drawn by the horses with less effort over rough and cut-up roads, is less liable to injury and breakage, and more durable in every respect.
The invention consists of a coupling-pole made of two sections, which are connected by acouplin g of suitable construction, so that each pole-section has independent axial play. The body of the wagon is connected to the coupling-pole by a hinged center rod and bracing side straps, while the front spring is capable of laterally-oscillating motion by being hinged either to the front head-block or to the wagonbody.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a spring-wagon, and B the couplingpole, which extends from the front head-block, G, to the rear axle. The coupling-pole B is made of two parts or sections, a shorter front and a longer rear section. These sections are connected by a coupling, D, which is constructed in such a manner that each pole-section has an independent axial play, so as to follow or yield to the motions of the front and bind axles when they assume a laterally-inclined position in passing over rough parts of the roads.
The coupling D may be of any approved construction, it consisting, mainly, of a center pin which connects the end mountings of the polesections, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
The hind end ofthe rear pole-section is firmly attached to the rear axle by side braces, a a, while the front section of the pole is rigidly connected by straps b b to the front head-block, O. The body A is connected either to the front section of the pole B, as shown in Fig. 2, or to an intermediate portion of the coupling D, as shown in Fig. 5, by a center rod, E, which is hinged to the bottom of the wagon at d. The lower end of the rod D passes through a hole of the front pole-section or of the coupling, and is further connected by leather or metal straps E to the sides of the wagon. The elliptical front spring, F, is either hinged at its lower portion to a strap, d, of the front head-block, being rigidly secured byits top portion to a bolster at the under side of the wagonbody, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, or the lower part of the spring E is rigidly affixed to the front head-block and hinged at its upper part by an intermediate link, 0, to a strap, d, of the spring E, the link being pivoted at its opposite ends to fixed lugs e of the wagon-body. Either construction imparts a certain flexibility to the front part of the wagon, so as to render it liable in a less degree to injury by sudden jars or strains exerted thereon in passing over rough roads.
By the axial play of the pole-sections and the facility by which the front spring follows the front axle both axles may assume a laterally-inclined position without affecting the load, as heretofore. The wagon is thereby less affected by rough roads, and at the same time its rigid connection with the coupling-pole retained by the hinged center rod and connecting side straps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a coupling-pole made in two sections, which are connected by a coupling, for admitting the axial motion of the sections, with a hinged center rod and side 3. In a spring-wagon, the (.Ulllllllltllltm ot';

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presenee of two witnesses, this 23d day of April, 1830.
ALBERT IIAMPE.
