This invention relates to a mechanism for producing headgear of the type used by chefs, waiters, bakers and storekeepers. Usually if such attendants wear caps, they are formed of fabric, such-as linen, which must be laundered frequently to maintain them in a sanitary and neat-appearing condition. This repeated cleansing causes the caps to prematurely deteriorate and they must therefore be replaced within relatively short periods. 'Because of the expensiveness of these requirements, the use of such caps has not be come as widespread as it might have otherwise.
An object of this invention resides in the provision of a machine which will produce caps of the type mentioned from relatively inexpensive sheet or strip material in order that the caps may be discarded when they become soiled. Caps so produced are similar in appearance to the linen caps but because of their low cost, due to their manner of production and discardability, they become more desirable.
The machine forming the present invention comprises an improvement over that disclosed in the patent to Glenn A. Shafier et al., No. 2,023,152 dated December 3, 1935, whereby the practicability, efiiciency and productivity of the machine is increased and the degree of personal attention required to maintain the machine in proper operating condition diminished.
It is an object of the invention to provide a cap-making machine having a series of sets of rollers operated by power driven means to unwind a strip of paper from a supply roll; emboss the paper to cause it to simulate fabric; print advertising or other indicia thereon; waterproof a longitudinally extending zone of reduced width on the strip; form a plurality of longitudinally extending creases in the strip; successively sever sections of predetermined length from the strip and feed these sections to mechanism provided on the machine which will operate on the strip sections to roll and fold the same into collar-like band-forming bodies, additional means cooperating with the last named mechanism to apply sheets of thin paper to the bodies to close one end of each and form the crowns of the finished caps. An object also resides in providing means ad" jacent to certain of the sets of rollers, mentioned above, to apply color and designs to the paper passing between the rollers, means being provided to mount the color and design applying means on the machine in such manner that they may be readily moved into and out of operating positions.
,Another object resides in providing the strip rolling and folding mechanism with a turret head having a plurality of mold chambers circumferentially spaced thereon, means being provided to intermittently move the turret head to successively register the mold chambers with apparatus for inserting the strip sections into the chambers, performing various operations on the strip sections while they are disposedwithin the chambers and discharging the caps from the turret, the turret moving means being so designed as to facilitate the smooth, rapid production oi'caps and reduce to a minimum the attention required to keep the mechanism in operating condition.
A further object rests in providing improved mechanism for introducing the crown forming sheets to the molds containing the partially folded strip sections, the sheet introducing mechanism having roller means for withdrawing paper from a supply roll, knife means for cutting the paper into proper size pieces; means for positioning these pieces in registration with a mold chamber while maintaining them in a flat condition; and means for moving the pieces into the mold at the proper time.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which a machine formed in accordance with the present invention has been disclosed in detail.
