This invention relates tov umbrellas and more particularly to umbrella handles,

One object of the invention is to provide an umbrella handle in the form of a receptacle at the end of the umbrella. rod, whereby a pair of rubbers or other article capable of being disposed within a relatively small space can be conveniently carried with the umbrella for use when necessary, the combined handle and receptacle being of simple construction and formed of parts which need not be separated in order to provide access to the contents of the receptacle or to permit the insertion in or removal of the contents from the receptacle.

A further object of the invention is generally to provide an umbrella handle with a receptacle having parts which are constructed and arranged in such manner as to facilitate manipulation thereof for opening and closing the receptacle.

Another object of the invention is generally to provide an improved device of the character described.

The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully comprehended from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying illustrative drawing.

Fig. 1 is a side view of an umbrella handle embodying the present invention, the umbrella, a part of which is shown, being closed;

Fig. 2 is a view of the umbrella handle and receptacle in the open position thereof, and shows a pair of rubbers disposed within the receptacle;

Referring now to the drawing in detail, there is shown in Fig. 1 an umbrella ID of any suitable construction having a rod l2 to which the conventional umbrella frame (not shown) is secured. The umbrella handle and receptacle HI embodying the present invention is secured to rod I2. Said handle is preferably formed of metal and comprises a base I6 having a recess l8 in which the end of the rod I2 is secured. Base 16 together with two longitudinally extending tubular or cylindrical members or sleeves 2'0 and 22 and an end-closure member or a cap 24 define a chamber in which a pair of rubbers, which are I ordinarily of the sandal or heelless type, or in which any other article indicated generally by the reference letter A can be disposed whereby to be carried with the umbrella in a convenient manner ready for use when the occasion arises.

Sleeve 20 is preferably somewhat thicker than outer sleeve 22..

.Member 20 is, as here shown, in the form of a sleeve and is secured to and projects longitudinally from base I6. Said member 20 can be secured to base [6 in any suitable Way as, for example, by securing the inner end of said sleeve to the inner surface of peripheral shoulder 30 so that said member is non-movable on said base. Member 22 is also in the form of a sleeve and is mounted for rotation on member 20 in snug engagement therewith, the inner end of sleeve 22 being in rotatable engagement in a peripheral groove 32 formed in said base. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, base I6 and the adjacent parts of both sleeves have parts in overlapping relation. Cap 24 which closes the outer end of the chamber is fixedly secured to the outer end of inner sleeve 20 and prevents substantial movement of member 22 longitudinally of member 2|]. Said cap 24 has a peripheral flange 33 which is spaced from the outer periphery of sleeve 20 to provide a peripheral groove for the upper end of sleeve 22. It will be noted that cap 24 and peripheral part 32 of base 16 hold sleeve 22 against longitudinal movement. Sleeves 20 and 22 are provided with openings 21 and 28, respectively, which register with each other upon a predetermined relatively rotary movement of the two sleeves, and each of said sleeves have parts opposite the openings in the companion sleeves, respectively, for closing the chamber upon a predetermined relative movement of said two sleeves. Thus, the chamber can be opened and closed by the simple operation of turning the outer sleeve 22 upon the inner sleeve 20. The fit of sleeve 22 on sleeve 20 is sufliciently close to prevent unintentional movement of sleeve 22 on sleeve 20 but said fit is sufficiently free to facilitate intentional turning movement. Further, it will be understood that when a, pair of rubbers or other article is placed within the chamber, said rubbers or other article presses upon opposed side walls of the two sleeves, respectively, in the closed position of the latter and thereby tends to prevent accidental turning of the outer sleeve on the inner sleeve. The size of the handle l4 and accordingly of the chamber can vary, but a convenicnt size is provided when the sleeves are about five inches long and about one and one-half inches and one and five-eighths inches for the inner and outer sleeves, respectively.

While 'I have shown and described the preferred form of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise than as here illustrated or described and it will also be understood that in the illustrated embodiment certain changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts may be made. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the invention as herein specifically shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: In a handle for umbrellas, two cylindrical members mounted co-axially for relative rotary movement, one within the other, said members being hollow and having cylindrical side walls defining a receptacle for a pair of rubbers or other article, each of said side walls of said members having an opening for the insertion and removal of the article, said openings registering with each other upon predetermined relative rotary movement of said members to provide access to said receptacle, the opening in each one of said members being closed by a part of the other member upon a predetermined relative movement of said two members, a base in fixed relation to said cylindrical members axially thereof, said base comprising a member of circular cross section .secured to said cylindrical members at the adjacent ends thereof at one end of said receptacle and closing said last mentioned ends, said base being substantially thicker than the walls of said cylindrical members and having an upper peripheral flange provided with an inner peripheral shoulder, the peripheral edge portion of one end of the inner cylindrical memher being secured to the inner surface of said flange radially inwardly of said shoulder and the adjacent end of the outer sleeve abutting said shoulder, a portion of said flange overlapping a peripheral edge portion of the outer sleeve at the last mentioned end thereof, and a cap secured to the opposite end of the inner sleeve and having a flange overlapping the peripheral edge portion of the opposite end of the outer sleeve in relatively movable relation thereto.
