lNvENToR ATTORNEY wITNEsSES N.PETERS. PHOTdUTI-IDGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MCKAY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
NIPPER FOR BOAT-RO PES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,072, Adated August 10, 1880.
(No model.)
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCKAY, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nippers for Boat-Ropes; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suchY as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a partl of this specification.
My invention consists in the combination of devices and appliances hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective viewfof a device embodying myinvention. Fig. II represents a variation of the invention.
The object of this invention is to provide a means, which I term a nipperj for grasping and. holding a boat-rope, and is intended more particularly for nipping and holding the-ropes whereby the fenders of the boat are lifted and held suspended.
It is frequently the case, where a rope is secured by being wrapped upon a belaying-pin, that the fastening is not secure, and when an undue strain is brought upon the fender-as, for instance, by a person leaning against itit is liable to fall and precipitate the person into the water, or do other damage.
In carrying out my invention l provide a plate, A, with an eye, B,for the passage of the rope, and a wedge-shaped notch, C, standing out, preferably, at an angle with the-plate A. This plate is fastened at the edge ofthe deck, or any other suitable position, and the rope is passed up through the eye.
When it is desired to lift the fender the rope is drawn up through the eye and through the notch, and when sufficiently raised the rope is simply pressed down into the notch, which takes a bite upon it and holds it firmly.
The eye B may be open, as shown in Fig. I, or closed, as shown in Fig. II. I prefer generally to make it open, as being the more convenient form.
What I claim is- 1. A nipper for boat-ropes, Src., consisting of a plate with an outstanding eye, in which the rope is threaded, and an upright wedgeshaped notch for engaging the rope, substantially as and for the purpose` described.
2. vA nipper for boat-ropes, Ste., consisting of a plate provided with an outstanding open eye, in which the rope is threaded, and an upright wedge-shaped notch for engaging the rope, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specifica-- tion in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MCKAY.
Witnesses S. E. TIIoMAs, WILL. M. PORTER.
