Description
Jan. 12, 1943. J. ORTYL PORTABLE SHOWER BATH Filed April 27, 1942 Ewen-haw W W Patented Jan. 12, 1943 warren stares Wm or ies PORTABLE SHOWER BATH Joseph Ortyl, Detroit, Mich.
Application April 27, 1942, Serial No. 440,731
2 Claims.
My invention relates to portable shower baths, and its principal object is to provide a unitary structure containing all the necessary equipment and arranged to be easily transported from place to place, so that it can be used in any desired room of a house or other building.
Such an arrangement is very desirable in many old houses which are not at present equipped with a bath, and in farmhouses in remote districts where there are no adequate plumbing facilities.
Another object of my invention is to provide a shower bath which can be operated with the minimum fixed amount of water, thus avoiding the waste which is unavoidable in the present shower baths in which water is drained continuously from the house supply during the bathing operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a supporting platform for the bath which can be elevated and wheeled from place to place and then let down on the floor to form a fixed, stable structure.
In order that my invention may be readily understood, I will now describe a preferred embodiment of the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an end elevation.
Figure 3 is a plan View, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view drawn to enlarged scale showing details of the elevating castor device. Figure 5 is a detail.
Like characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing, 1 is the platform, preferably of wood, adapted to support the metal or other bathtub 2. Upon the four corners of the platform and secured thereto by flanged members 3| are vertical pipes 3, and to these are connected horizontal pipe members 4 secured to the vertical members by the usual three-way pipe sockets 32. To one pair of vertical pipes is secured a board 5, and upon this board is mounted a pump 6, preferably of the simple rotary geared type, having a pulley 61, connected by a V belt 62 in driving relation with the pulley H upon the electric motor '3. A controlling switch may be furnished for the motor, but it is preferred in general to connect it by a suitable cable, not shown, with any wall socket or receptacle in the room. The suction end of the pump is provided with a flexible hose 63 extended downwards into the tub and having a strainer 64 of any of the well known types, while the discharge end of the pump is connected by pipes 65, 65, B1 to the usual spraying member 68 located approximately over the center of the bathtub 2. Thus, when the requisite amount of water at proper temperature is placed in the tub and the motor I is started, a continuous shower of fine spray is discharged from the member 68. Surrounding the tub are removable curtains 21 which are suspended from the horizontal members 4 by the usual rings 22 and pins 23. The curtains are partly broken away.
The platform I is provided with four castor wheels 8 mounted in brackets 8| swingable about a vertical axis upon ball bearings 82, while the fixed portions 83 of the castors have upwardly extending threaded members 84, these members being mounted in threaded openings in plates ll,
the said plates being secured to the platform I as by bolts [2, spaces intermediate these bolts allowing the castor wheels to turn through a complete circle. Upon the underside of the platform are solid members or chocks I3 upon which the complete structure rests when in use. When, however, it is desired to move the bath to a different location, the member 84 of the castor is rotated by means of a key or wrench, which fits over the squared portion 85, so as to force the castors downwards and so raise the chocks I3 above the floor.
In Figure '5 of the drawing is shown a vertical section of my improved strainer, the lower part of which is formed with a chamber 69 which communicates with the hose 63, and over this chamber is a hemispherical strainer member 69A of wire mesh or other construction, the arrangement being such that when the strainer rests on the bottom of the tub the gauze portion is elevated thereabove so that it will be free from the dirt which necessarily collects on the bottom. Further, the chamber 69 being filled with water, can be raised up on the flexible hose above the level of the pump so that the latter will be automatically primed before starting.
It will be observed from the foregoing description and by reference to the drawing that I have provided a simple and effective arrangement for the purpose set forth, and while I have herein described and shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the same pertains that various changes in detail may be made to meet any particular or peculiar requirement without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination. with a portable shower bath including a spray nozzle, a container, and a pump elevated above said container and adapted to deliver water therefrom to said nozzle, of a flexible suction pipe on said pump terminating in a hollow member having solid bottom and side Walls and an open top, whereby said member may retain water and be raised above said pump so 10 as to discharge water into the same to prime it.
JOSEPH ORTYL.
