FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,734, dated August 3,1880,

Application filed June 28, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. WILLIAM H. BRIGKER, a citizen of the United States, resident at Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to fences; and it consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

The figure is a view, in perspective, of a railfence embodying the improvements of my invention.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the panels of an ordinary rail-fence.

I have shown in the drawing a seven-rail fence, as by my improved construction I am enabled to dispense with from three to four of the upper rails, and yet produce a fence that will not be blown down by wind-storms and one that will not be rubbed or pushed down by stock.

To guard against either of these accidents I provide, at suitable intervals along the line of the fence, posts B, of wood, stone, or other suitable material, and from these posts B, I stretch wire lengths C over the top rails, D, of the panels, as shown, and interlock the stakes F with the wire G by placing them in pairs on opposite sides of the fence and wire and crossing them near their upper ends, as shown in the drawing.

In this way I produce a cheap. simple fence, by which I save from three to four of the upper rails usually required to constructa fence of the requisite height, and at the same time render the fence more secure against storms and stock.

Having thus fully described my invention, what claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a rail-fence, of the posts B, wire 0', and stakes F, constructed and operating substantially as and for-the purposes herein set forth.
