3 Claims.
The present invention relates to davits for launching boats from the deck of a ship.
An object of the invention resides in providin frame members for the davit arms which may swing inwardly from the side of the ship.
Another object of the invention includes the provision of means for limiting the inward swinging movement of frame members associated with the davit arms.
Other objects and features of the invention will be more apparent from a consideration of the annexed drawings and following description wherein an exemplary embodiment of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of one of the frame members illustrating parts of a davit arm in section, and Fig. l is taken in the direction of the arrows associated with the line I-I of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view showing one of the frame members and the davit arm supporting a boat in an intermediate position of the launching mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the launching mechanism tilted to an inner position.
Fig. 4 is an end elevational view illustrating the position of the parts of the davit mechanism during the launching of a boat from the side of the ship.
Referring a davit arm which is provided with a pulley 2 near the upper and outer end thereof and a pulley 3 which form parts of means for supporting a boat 5 on the davit. The supporting means for raising and lowering the boat 5 includes a cable or rope and pulley arrangement indicated generally at I in the drawings. The keel of the boat 5 normally rests upon a projection '6 extending laterally from the davit arm I. The lower end of the davit arm I is pivotally mounted at 8 on the deck I of the ship.
A triangular shaped frame member is associated with each davit arm and each triangular-shaped frame member includes a vertical arm 9 which may be U-shaped in vertical section and the davit arm I is mounted with the lower end thereof within the legs of the U-shaped vertical arm 9. Each triangular frame member is pivotally mounted at 8 on the deck of the ship. The triangular frame member includes a horizontal arm 20 which is adapted to lie along the deck 1 of the ship as shown in Fig. 2. The triangular-shaped frame member is completed by means of two angular brackets 2| which connect the upper end of the vertical arm 9 with the outer end of the to the drawings, there is shown at I horizontal arm 20. A pulley I0 is rotatably mounted at the upper end of the triangularshaped frame member and this pulley provides a guide for the cable I I which isemployed for raising and lowering the-boat 5.
When it is desired to swing the davit mechanism inwardly from the side I4 of the ship and inwardly from the position shown in Fig. 2 each davit arm I is first secured to the associated triangular-shaped frame member. Suitable means for locking the davit I to the frame member may include a lever I8 more clearly shown in Fig. 4 which is swingably mounted on the vertical arm 9. The locking means may also include a hook 22 carried by the davit arm I so that when the lever arm I8 is swung to a position to engage the hook 22 the davit will be locked to the vertical arm 9.
Thereafter the triangular-shaped frame members and the davits I may be swung inwardly on the pivots 8 by pulling the cable II so that the launching position then assumes the position shown in Fig. 3. The invention includes means for limiting the inwardly tilting movement of the frame members and such means may include a pin I'I which extends through the brackets 2I'. Two hooks I6 are rigidly mounted on the deck of the ship and these hooks are adapted to be engaged by the pin I1 and limit the inward swinging movement of the frame members as shown in Fig. 3.
When it is desired to launch a boat 5 with the launching mechanism in the position as shown in Fig. 3 the cable II is released so that the triangular-shaped frame members may swing outwardly until the horizontal arms 20 rest on the deck 1 of the ship. The davit I also swings outwardly during such pivoting of the triangularshaped frame members. In this position of the parts the triangular-shaped frame members may be prevented from swinging movement by inserting a pin I5 through the openings 26 in the hooks I6 and the openings 21 in the triangularshaped frame members.
Thereafter the lever [8 may be turned to release the hook 22 so that the boat 5 may be lowered. After releasing the locking mechanism formed of the lever I8 and the hook 22 the davit I will swing to a further outer position by releasing the cable II and the projection 6 will eventually limit the outward swinging movement of the davit as shown in Fig. 4. The boat 5 may be lowered to the surface of the water by further releasing the cable II so that the block and pulley means 4 may be extended to lower the boat 5.
While the invention has been described with reference to specific structural details it will be appreciated that changes may be made therein 2 by those skilled in the art.
pended claims.
I claim:
l. A davit device for launching boats from a ship comprising, two triangular shaped frame members spaced from each other along a deck of the ship, means pivotally connecting said frame members to the deck of the ship, a davit am swingably mounted on each of said pivot means adjacent each frame member, means carried 'by the davits for supporting the boat to be launched, a cable extending from said supportingmeans for raising and lowering the boat, means for locking each davit to the associated frame member, and means limiting the inward tilting movement of the frame members.
2. In a davit device for launching boats from the deck of a ship comprising, two triangularshaped frame members spaced along the deck of the ship, each frame member including a vertical arm and a horizontal arm adapted to lie along the deck of the ship, a davit pivotally connected to each frame member adjacent the lower end of the vertical arm thereof, means carried by the davits for supporting the boats to be launched, removable means for locking each davit to the vertical arm of the frame members, a removable pin for securing each horizontal arm of the frame members adjacent the deck of the ship, and means for limiting the inward tilting of the frame members.
3. A davit device for launching boats from the deck of a ship comprising, two frame members spaced along the deck of the ship, pivotally attached thereto and each having a horizontal arm and a vertical arm, said vertical arms being U- shaped in vertical section, a davit mounted within each U-shaped arm and pivotally mounted adjacen't the lower end of the respective frame members, means carried by the davits for supporting the boats to be launched, means for locking each davit in the vertical arms of the frame members, and means for limiting inward tilting movement of said frame 'members and said davits.
