To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Or'ro T. HENRIKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Davits, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in davits which employ a construction which permits the release of the life boat from the deck of the vessel which carries it, and permits same after its release to automatically assume a position a considerable distance beyond the side of the vessel and which automatically releases the life boat from the connection with the davit upon its being launched in the water.
The object of the invention is the production of a construction which will permit the life boat to be positioned a considerable distance from the side of the vessel during the lowering operation, thereby preventing the possibility of a collision between the side of the vessel and the life b oat while the same is suspended and lowered by the device, also to securely hold the life boat in position upon the deck and to permit the same to be raised when desired. The construction also embodies an arrangement whereby the distance between the life boat and the vessel may be increased, thereby insuring sufiicient distance between the vessel and the life boat during the lowering of the same when the vessel has. listed to one side. The improvement readily permits the device to be at all times under the control of a single person to position the life boat at the edge of the vessel andto lower the same to safety. Further objects of the device are to accomplish these and other desira ble results in a simple and expeditious manner.
I will explain the construction and operation of the device more in detail by reference to the accompanying drawings, in

The construction of the device shown in the drawings includes an upright 15 which carries the jointed arm 16 constructed of the two members 17 and 18. These members are preferably of I beam cross section, one of the members being secured at an end to the upright 15 and provided at its opposite end with one part of a hinge 19 which forms a means by which the other member 17 is secured thereto, and permitted to swing with relation to the members 15 and 18.. The end ofthis member 17 remote from the hinge is provided with the eyelet 20 from which a stay bar 21 extends. The opposite end of this stay bar 21 is hingedly connected to the member 22 which is secured to the upper portion of the member 15. This construction forms a substantial support for the end of the arm 16. It will be noted that the point of connection between the bar 21 and the member 22 is positioned substantially in alinement with the hinge 19 of the member 16. Thus it will be evident that the stay bar 21 and the portion 17 of the member 16 may swing freely without resulting in a twisting strain beingexerted upon the member 21 and 22 when the member 17 is caused to assume any of its positions. By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the member 17 normally assumes a osition which is parallel with the side. edge of the vessel 23 and is positioned transversely thereto when the life boat 24 is desired to be lowered and launched from the said vessel. 7 A convenient means whereby this aim may be swung from one position to the other, includes the drum 25, to which one end of each of the flexible cables 26 and27 is secured, the opposite ends of said cables being securely fastened to stationary members 28 and 29 which are preferably secured tothe deck of the boat. The flexible cable 26 extends from the drum25 to and around a pulley 30 around the pulley 31 and thence back to the member 29 to which the end thereof is secured. The pulley 31 is as shown connected with the arm 17 and engages the loop 32 formed in the cable 26 between the member 29 and the pulley 30. This rrangement produces a means whereby said arm 17 is caused to assume its inner- -most or normal position. The arm 17 is side of the center line of the hinge upon the arm, thereby permitting said arm to be readily moved outwardly toward that side of the boat from which the life boat is to be lowered. As before stated one end of the cable 27 is secured to the cable drum 25, and extends therefrom around a pulley 34 to and around a pulley 35, thence to and around the pulley 36 and back to the member 28 at which point the end of said cable is permanently secured. It will be noted that a loop 37 'is also formed in said cable between the pulley 36 and the member 28, and that the pulley 36 is positioned in this loop in a manner similar to the pulley 31 ofthe cable 26. It will be understood that the ends of each of the cables 26 and 27 are secured to the drum 25 in a manner which permits one of the cables to be wound thereon and the other let off upon the rotation of the drum. \Vhen the arm 17 is desired to be positioned as indicated by the dotted lines of Fig. 3, the operator will lift the holding dog 38 away from the ratchet wheel 39 which permits the rotation of the crank arm '40 which when operated causes ratchet wheel 39 to hold said arm in its last named position. When the arm 17 is brought to this last named position the life boat which has been loaded while still resting upon the deck is permitted to travel outwardly upon the arm, butnot until the same is released from the deck to which it is lashed and held in position by the lashings generally designated 41-42, and the hinged chocks 43 and 44 provided at each end there of. The lashings and chocks may be controlled by a single lever, but as shown, are
these lashings being connected together by the shaft 47 which is provided at its opposite ends with the eccentrics 48. These eccentrics cooperate with the eccentric straps 49 from which extend a pair of connecting rods 50 which are provided intermediate their ends with the turn buckle arrangement 51. The upper end of the rod 50 is provided with an automatically releasing member 52 which engages a hooked member 53 which is hooked over the rail of the life boat. This automatic releasing hook is designed to securely lock and hold the hook 53 and the rod 50' together while a pulling strain is exerted upon it and to automatically release the same immediately upon this strain being released therefrom. This hook consists of the members 5455 and 56, which are hinged together and when operated fall away from each other and release the hook 53 upon the actuation of the eccentries 48 and its cooperating parts. When the lashing's are released they will fall downwardly and permit the life boat to pass from the deck without hindrance. Each of the eccentric shafts 47 are provided with a lever arm 57 which are connected together by the rod 58 which is in turn secured to and actuated by the lever 45, this lever being positioned in the region from which the other elements are controlled.
The chocks 43 and 44 are both designed to be moved out of the path of the life boat prior to its movement from the deck, and to permit of this, each of said chocks are hingedly secured to the deck by the hinges 59-59. These chocks preferably swing outwardly toward each end of the life boat which they support. To accomplish this each is provided with connecting rods 60 and 61 respectively, the opposite ends of said rods being connected with the pivoted link 62 which is in turn connected with and actuated by the lever 46 by the rod 63. When the lashings are released and the chocks are swung away from engagement with the life boat, the same is then in condition to be permitted to travel outwardly upon the arm 16 which at this time is positioned so that the members 17 and 18 of the arm 16 are in alinement-with each other.
It will be understood that the life boat is supported at a sufficient height from the deck of the vessel to permit the same to travel fromits position over the chocks to a position beyond the edge of the vessel withoutinterference therewith, and that the same is raised slightly therefrom when the portion 17 of the arm 16 is swung outwardly,
also that the life boat automatically starts on its outward travel from the portion 18 to the portion 17 of the arm 16 immediately upon the release of the lashings and the chocks. This automatic action is accomplished by means of the tackle arrangement which includes the pulleys 64 and 65, the member generally designated by the numeral 66 and the flexible cable 67. This cable 67 has one of its ends secured to the drum .68 and its other end secured to the eyelet 69 of the pulley 64, and extends from the drum 68 over the pulley 67 a mounted in the upright 15 around the grooved wheel 73 to and around the pulley wheel 72 provided at the outer end of the arm 17 back to the grooved wheel 71, over and around the pulley wheel 74, around the pulley 64:, up and around the pulley 65 and back to the eyelet 69, where the same is securely fastened by its end. The pulleys 71, 73 and 74 are carried by the member 66. The pulley 65 is also secured to and carriedv by the member 66 through the medium of the U-shaped yoke 75. The pulley 64 is further provided with the link and eyelet 76 which forms part of a means whereby the life boat issecured thereto. The life boat is' suitably connected with the link 76 through the medium of the rod 77 which is secured at one of its ends to the keel thereof and is provided at its opposite end with the automatically releasable hook 78 similar in construction and operation to the hook which is provided at an end of the rod which forms part of the means whereby the life boat is lashed to the deck. This rod 77 is preferably positioned substantially midway between the ends of the life boat and forms a convenient means whereby one end of each of the cables 79 and 80 which extend therefrom to the ends of the life boat may be secured. The object'of these cables 79 and 80 is to prevent the life boat from becoming unbalanced by unequal weight applied at the endds thereof, while the same is being lowere It will be evident from the foregoing explanation of the arrangement that immediately upon the release of the lashings and the chocks the life boat will start to travel outwardly and downwardly prior to its being launched. This downward travel is limited and equal to the distance between the normal position of the member 66 and the pulley 7 2 at the end of the arm 16. This preliminary actuation is due to the weight ofthe life boat acting upon the cable 67 which causes the member 66 to travel toward the end of the arm 16, it being borne in mind that the life boat is normally positioned at a suflicient height to accomplish this. It will also be noted that the member 66 is positioned between the hinge and the member 15 when the device is in its normal position, and as the arm 16 is straightened causes the life boat to be lifted slightly from the chocks, this being due to the fact that the member 66 and the pivot, of
the arm are located at different points on the arm which causes the cable 67 to lift said life boat from the chocks. To promote the ease with which this may result the member 66 is provided with the roller bearings 81 and 82, provided at upper and lower portions thereof, and engage the flanges 83 and 84 of the member 16. The
is also provided to limit the inward movementof the member 66. To permit the life boat to be lowered from its above mentioned position to the water, the cable 67 is let off from the drum 68, and immediately upon the boat being launched the automatic hook 78 operates and releases the same from the cable which permits the boat to leave the vessel in safety.
A means whereby the speed with which the member 66 is permitted to travel along the arm 16 is also provided. This means includes the drum 87, the flexible cable 88, the pulley 89 carried by the member 66, and the pulley 90. The flexible cable 88 has one of its ends secured to the drum and extends therefrom around the pulley 90, thence to the pulley 89 and back to any'suitable point as 91, where it is secured. Provision is also made to further assist the operator in controlling both the speed with which the life boat is moved along the arm 16 and also the lowering of the same to the water. This means includes a. hand controlled brake provided upon each of the drums 68 and 87 placed in convenient proximitv to each other, whereby both may be handily accessible to the operator, Any convenient mechanism whereby this control may be accomplished may be utilized. The form herein shown includes the rotatable hand wheels 92 and 93, which operate in conjunction with the respective drums 87 and 68. The construction of both brakes being identical only one will be herein described. These brakes both include a brake drum 9 L which is secured to each cable drum, and a brake band 95, one end of which is secured to the trigger 96. this trigger being connected to the rod 97, which when the hand wheel is turned, permits the brake band to expand, thus permitting the drum to rotate freely as is usual in brakes of this character. From the foregoing explanation it will be evident that the outward movement of the member 66 along the member 16 may be arrested at any suitable point upon the member 16, from which the boat may be launched, Provision is also made whereby the davit may be tilted to insure suflicient distance between the side of the vessel and the life boat, when the vessel has listed to one side. To accomplish this, the lowermost end of the member 15 is provided with a hin e joint 99 which for the convenience of illustration is shown as consisting of the member 100 which is secured in any convenient manner to the deck of the vessel and the bolt 101 which passes through the lowermost end of the member 15. This provides a hinged connection whereby the member 15 and its associated parts may be tilted to any desired angular position from the vertical. The member 15 is further provided with the dog 102 which engages teeth provided upon the ratchet member 103 also cured o the deck. This arrangement produces a convenient means whereby the member 15 is prevented from inclining toward the vessel, and also produces a means which permits the member 15 to be tilted toward the edge of the vessel without the necessity of any manual assistance to operate it. The means whereby the outward tilt of the member 15 is controlled includes the flexible cable 104 which has both of its ends secured to members 105105, which are secured to the deck and preferably in the rear of the member 15. This cable 104 extends from one of the members 105 to a pulley 106 positioned near the top of the tilting member 15, thence down to the pulley 107 and back to another pulley 108, positioned adjacent the pulley 106 and down to the other member 105. A cable 109 and drum 110 are also provided. One end of this cable is made fast as indicated at 111 and the other end is secured to the drum 110. A pulley 112 engages the cable 109 between its ends. This pulley and the pulley 107 are secured together by means such as the links 113. The cable drum 110 is also provided with a hand operated brake mechanism similar to that employed in connection with the drums 68 and 87, thus permitting the drum 110 to be released and held at will. It will be seen from the foregoing explanation that as the cable is released from the drum 110 the member 15 and its associated parts will be permitted to tilt outwardly a distance corresponding to the amount of cable let off of said drum 110. Provision is also made whereby the boat may be raised from the water, and drawn back to its position upon the deck of the boat, and to cause the member 15 to assume its upright position if at any time this result is desired.-
The means whereby the'raising of the life boat from the water is accomplished includes the crank handle 114 and the gears 115 and 116 which mesh with each other and which when the crank handle is turned cause the cable to be wound upon the drum 68 and the boat raised to the end of the arm 16, from which position the same may be caused to be brought to a position upon the deck by means of the crank handle 116 removably secured to the shaft of the drum 87 The upright 15 is brought to its vertical position by winding the cable upon the drum 110 by applying the crank 117. Thus the device may be set up in position for future use.
In Fig. 9 I show another arrangement of the device, which embodies the use of a pair of the devices to a single life boat, one of which is positioned at each end thereof. Where this arrangement is desired both of the arms 17 will project inwardly. The shaft of the drum 87 will extend over to and connect with a similar drum of the other device generally designated 118. This will permit control of the lowering of both ends of the life boat.
From the foregoing explantion of the con struction of the device it will be readily apparent that when the life boat is desired to be lowered from the deck all that will be necessary is to cause the lashings and the chocks to be operated which releases the life boat from the deck. hen this has been accomplished and the arm 16 straightened, the member 66 which is normally carried by the portion 18 of the arm 1.6 will automatically start on its outward travel upon said arm. This outward travel is, as before stated, controlled by the brake provided upon the drum 87, and when the member 66 reaches the de sired position upon the member 17 of the arm 16, the life boat may be lowered by the release of the cable from the drum 68 which is also controlled by a hand brake, and upon the life boat being placed in the water the same will automatically be released and launched by the operation of the automatic hook 78 which is of such "construction that the elements which compose it fall away from their connections with each other upon the release of the pulling strain upon it, thus releasing'the life boat and permitting the same to be disconnected from the pulley 64:
to which it is normally secured. 'The particular hook herein referred to is made the subject matter of another application filed by me November 20, 1915, Serial No. 62,505.
It will also be evident that the position of the life boat with relation to the side of the vessel may be varied during the launching of the same, by permitting the upright 15 to assume various angular positions. The invention is capable of various uses, changes and modifications all of which are contemplated by me, and having described one form of construction and use in which same is adapted to be used, what I claim and desire to cover by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a boat, a member supported by said boat, said member being constructed to be moved from a position which is parallel to a side edge of said boat to a position in which a portion thereof extends trans versely thereto beyond said boat, a life saving apparatus carried by said member, be-
' combination of a jointed member secured to tween said boat and the member, and means whereby the life saving apparatus which is carried by said member is raised from the deck of the boat when said member assumes a position beyond said boat.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a boat, a davit supported by the boat, said davit being normally constructed to be moved from a position which is inboard and parallel toa side edge of said boat to a position in which a portion thereof extends transversely thereto beyond said boat, a life saving apparatus carried by said davit between said boat and said davit, and means whereby the life saving apparatus is automatically operated along the portion of the davit which extends beyond the side edge of the boat when said portion is swung outwardly.
3. In a .device of the character described, the combination of a pair of members positioned transversely to each other and constructed to carry a life saving apparatus, one of said members being secured at an end and constructed to tilt, the other of said members having a pivoted end section ointedly connected remote from the tilting member and constructed to swing outwardly and deposit the life saving apparatus which is supported by said transversely disposed member.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a davit mounted upon a boat, a life saving apparatus releasably secured to said boat, said davit being constructed to swing outwardly in a horizontal plane beyond the edge of the boat, means operable by the swinging member whereby the life saving apparatus is lifted from the boat and deposited beyond the edge of the boat, 'and means whereby said davit may be tilted in a vertical plane with relation to the boat. I

Ina device of the'class described, the combination of a boat, a davit supported by the boat, said davit being constructed to be moved from a position which is inboard and parallel to a side edge of said boat to a position in which a portion thereof extends transversely thereto beyond said boat, a life saving apparatus carried by said davit be tween said boat and said davit, and means whereby the life saving apparatus which is carried by said davit is automatically operated along the portion of the davit which extends beyond the side edge of the boat and lowered therefrom when said portion is swung outwardly.
7. In a device of the class described, in combination with a davit which is secured to a boat, saiddavit including a member which may swing outwardly, means for swinging said member outwardly, a life saving apparatus normally resting upon the boat and arranged to be carried by the member which is swinging outwardly, means extending toward the outermost portion of said swinging member, whereby the life saving apparatus may be lifted away from the boat and actuated along the swinging member when said swinging member is swinging outwardly.
8. In a davit, the combination of an upright, a life saving apparatus carried by the upright, the upright being arranged to tilt,
means for controlling the inclination of the upright, said means including a cable the opposite ends of which are made fast to a suitable portion of the boat which carries the davit, the portion of the cable between the ends thereof being connected to another ca ble, said last mentioned cable being connected to a controlling element which controls the angular position of the davit.
9. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a boat, a davit supported by the boat, said davit being constructed to be moved from a position which is inboard and parallel toa side edge of said boat, to a position in which a portion thereof extends transversely thereto beyond said boat, a life saving apparatus attached to the davit and normally positioned between the davit and the deck of the boat, and means operable upon the operation of the portion of the davit which is swung outwardly whereby said life saving apparatus is automatically operated along the portion of the davit which is swung outwardly.
-10. In a device of the class described, in combination with. a davit which is secured to a boat, said davit including a member which may swing outwardly from inboard the boat, means for swinging said member outwardly, a life saving apparatus normally resting upon the boat and arranged to be carried bya member mounted upon the member which swings outwardly, means extending toward the outermost portion of the swinging member whereby the member which is mounted upon the swinging member is actuated thereon, said swinging member forming a means whereby the member which carries the life saving apparatus is held against movement with relation thereto. 11. In a device of the character described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, a life saving apparatus releasably secured to said boat, said davit being constructed to swing in a plane which is parallel with the deck of said boat and to tilt in a plane which is transverse thereto, and means operable by the swinging member whereby the life saving apparatus is lifted from the boat and deposited beyond the edge of the boat.
12. In a device of the class described, in combination with a davit which is secured to a boat, said davit including a member which may swing outwardly from inboard the boat, means for swinging aid member outwardly, a life saving apparatus normally resting upon the boat and arranged to be carried by the member avhich is swung outwardly, means extending toward the outermost portion of the swinging member whereby the life saving apparatus may be lifted away from the boat and actuated along the swinging member when said swinging member is swung outwardly, said last-mentioned means forming a means whereby said life saving apparatus ma be lowered from the swinging member w en same is in said last-named position.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, said davit including an upright having one end of a jointed member secured thereto, a life saving apparatus carried by the jointed member between the upright and the ivot of the jointed member, that portion o the jointed member beyond the pivot being adapted to swing outwardly to permit the life saving apparatus to travel toward the end thereof beyond the edge of the boat.
14:. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, said davit including an upright having one end of a jointed member secured thereto, said upright being constructed to permit same to assume various angular positions with relation to the deck of said boat and the jointed member being constructed to swing toward the edge of said boat to deposit a life saving apparatus beyond the edge of the boat.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit, said davit including an upright having a jointed member secured thereto, the outermost end of the jointed member normally extending transversely to the other portion of the j ointed member and being adapted to swing outwardly, a life saving apparatus carried by said davit between the upright and the pivot of the ointed member, and means whereby said life saving apparatus is actuated along said jointed member, said means being operable when the swinging portion of the jointed member is swung outwardly.
16. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, a life saving apparatus releasably secured to said boat, said davit being constructed to swing in a plane which is substantially parallel with the deck of the boat and to tilt in a plane which is transverse thereto, to deposit said life saving apparatus beyond the edge of the boat, and means whereby the tilting of said davit may be controlled.
17. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit comprising a pair of hinged members, a truck arranged to travel along said hinged members, a life saving apparatus carried by the truck, means for swinging one of the hinged members out wardly and means engaging the truck whereby said truck is actuated along the hinged members.
18. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, said davit including an upright having a jointed member secured thereto, a lifesaving apparatus carried by the jointed mem ber between the upright and the pivot of the jointed member, that portion of the jointed member beyond the pivot being adapted to swing outwardly to permit the life saving apparatus to travel toward the end thereof, means supporting the life saving apparatus upon the jointed member, means for moving the last mentioned means along the jointed member, said means extending along the ointed member and to the means which support the life saving apparatus and thence to the life saving apparatus.
19. In a device of the class described, in combination with a boat, a member constructed to swing outwardly from said boat, a life saving apparatus carried by the swinging member, an arm positioned above the swinging member and extending outwardly to a point which is in alinement with the point from which the first mentioned member swings, and a member extending from the end of the arm to the end of the swinging member.
20. In a device of the class described, in combination with a boat, a member con structed to swing outwardly from said boat, means for swinging said arm outwardly, a life saving apparatus carried by the swinging member, a laterally projecting arm provided upon the swinging member to which said means is attached, said arm projecting beyond the point from which the first mentioned member swings and said meansbeing secured to the deck of the boat.
21. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of hinged members, a truck having life saving apparatus secured thereto and arranged to travel along the uplper face of said hinged members, said truck aving rollers engaging the side faces of said hinged members and having pulleys and means for actuating said truck along said hinged members, said means engaging said pulleys.
22. In a device of the class described, the combination of a boat, a davit supported by the boat, said davit having a member constructed to be moved from a position which is inboard of the boat to a position in which a portion thereof extends transversely there to beyond said boat, a truck arranged to travel upon the portion which is positioned beyond the side edge of the boat, said truck having a roller which rides upon the upper faceof said member, and a life saving apparatus secured to said truck, a cable secured to the member which is moved outwardly, said cable engaging the truck and forming the means for moving same along the member upon which it rides.
23. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, said davit including an upright and a hinged member secured to the upright, a life saving apparatus carried by a hinged member between the upright and the hinge of the member, that portion of said member beyond the pivot being adapted to swing outwardly to permit the life saving apparatus to travel toward the end. thereof beyond the edge of the boat.
24. In a device of the class described, the combination of a boat, a davit mounted upon the boat, a truck, life saving apparatus normally resting upon the boat and secured to said truck, said davit being constructed to swing outwardly, said truck being constructed to travel upon the upper face of davit and means whereby the life saving apparatus is lifted away from the boat, said means engaging said truck and forming a means whereby the truck is actuated along the davit when the same is swinging outwardly.
25. In a devic of the character described, the combination of a boat, a davit composed of a pair of hinged members, one of said hinged members being secured to the boat at an end and constructed to tilt toward the side of the boat, the other hinged member being secured to the first mentioned member and arranged to swing toward the side of the boat, a life saving apparatus normally resting upon the boat, and means operable upon the swinging of the second mentioned hinged member toward the side of the boat whereby the life saving apparatus is lifted from the boat and deposited beyond the edge of the boat.
26. In a device of the class described, the combination of a davit comprised of a pair of hinged members, a truck arranged to travel along the upper face of said hinged members, a life saving apparatus carried by the truck, means for swinging one of said hinged members outwardly, and means engaging the truck for actuating said truck along the hinged members.
27. In a device of the class described, the combination of an upright, a member arranged transversely thereto and being arranged to swing outwardly, the upright being arranged to tilt, means for swinging the transverse member, and means for controlling the inclination of the upright, both of said last mentioned means being attached to a device arranged upon the upright.
28. In a device of the class described, the combination of an upright, a member arranged to swing outwardly carried by the upright, the upright being arranged to tilt, means for moving the swinging member, and means for controlling the inclination of the upright, both of said last mentioned means being attached to a device arranged upon the upright.
29. I11 a device of the class described, the combination of a davit secured to a boat, said davit being positioned inboard of said boat, a truck carried by the davit, a life saving apparatus secured to the truck, a portion of said davit being arranged to be moved outwardly beyond the edge of the boat, means for moving the truck along the portion of the'davit which is swung outwardly, said means extending from the davit to th outermost end of the portion which is swung outwardly and to and around the truck and thence to the life saving apparatu's.
