To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, OLE E. KNorH, a sub ject of the King of Norway, and a resident of Fravel, in the county of Skagit and State of "Washington, have invented a new and Improved Davit, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to davits, and it has for its object to provide one which may be quickly and conveniently operated to extend outward a track on which the supporting carriage may travel, the means for extending outward the track, and for supporting the carriage on the track after it is extended, being operable by a single member under the control of one man.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the keel of the boat, which means may be quickly freed.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed. I
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse view of the plug members for holding the keel of the boat in position; Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary views showing the terminal of the supporting member for the movable track member; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a plan view of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is an end view of Fig. 5; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the carriage supported by the movable track member; and Fig. 9 is a perspective fragmentary view showing the outer end of the guideway.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that two guideways 10 are provided, which may be secured to the deck of a ship by means of the plates 11, guide members 12 being disposed for traveling in the guide ways 10, supporting arms or members 13 being secured to the said guide members 12. Plates 14 extend from the guide members 12, these plates 14 being adapted to engage the sockets 15 in the guideways 10. Frame members or standards 16 are provided, and are preferably secured to the guideways 10, these frame members or standards having secured to them horizontal members 17 having tracks 18, on which the supporting car- Specification of Letters Patent.

riages 19 may travel. Hinged at 20 to'the horizontal members 17 are additional track members 21, having tracks 22 which, when the members 21 are raised, will form a continuous surface with the tracks 18, over i which the carriages 19 may travel outwardly. The supporting members or arms 13 are pivoted to the shaft 23 which is-secured to the members 21 so that when the supporting members or arms 13' are moved outwardly they will raise the members 21 and will support them in raised position so that the carriages 19 may travel outwardly beyond the side of the ship, as has been described. The shaft 23 is made sufficiently strong to bear the weight of the boat.
Bearing members 24 are secured to the guideways 10, and in these bearing members 24 are Qurnaled pulleys 25, pulleys 26 being journaled in bearings at the ends of the members 21. Pulleys 27 are secured to a shaft 28, which is journaled in the frame member 16. This shaft 28 is shorter than the shaft 23. In the hearings in the bottom of the frame member 16 there is journaled a shaft 29,'having a head member 30, and a threaded portion 31',Jleading to the said head member. Mounted to turn on the shaft 29 there is an operating wheel 32, having a thread which meshes with the thread 31. Between the operating wheel 32 and the bearings 33 in the frame 16, in which the shaft 29 is ournaled, there is a drum 34 sleeved on said shaft 29, separated into two parts by an annular flange 35. This drum 34 has a clutch member 37 adapted to be engaged by the clutch member 36. This clutch member 36 has guideways 36 in.
which, the guide members 36 travel, these guide members 36 being connected by a ring 36 and being adapted to engage the guidcways 37 in the clutch member 37. Se cured to the shaft 29 there are two additional drums 38. Ropes 39 are secured to the drums 38, and are disposed around the pulleys 25 with terminals 41 disposed in recesses 40 in the bottom of the supportingmembers or arms 13, the said terminals 41 being secured to the said supporting members or arms 13, in the said recesses 40.
Ropes 42 are provided, terminals of which are secured to the front 43 of the carriages 19, the ropes 42 being disposed around the pulleys 26, then over the wheels 27, and
down around and secured one to the drum 34 at one slde of the flange 35 and the other longer than the to the drum 34 at one side of the flange 35. Other ropes 44 are secured to the rear 45 of thecarriages 19, the said other ropes 44 be ing disposed over the other set of pulleys 27, and thence down to the drums 34 and 34 to which they are secured at the other sides of, the flanges 35 and 35. The drum 34 is mounted to rotate on the shaft 29 at a distance from the drum 34. Blocks 46 are se cured to the ship, these blocks having recesses 47, which are spaced from the top of the plugs 46, there being additional blocks 48, which have projecting members 49, the ends of which are adapted to be disposed in the recesses 47, the projections 49 being depth of the recesses 47, so that the top of the blocks 48 will be spaced from the top of the blocks 46, when the said projections 49 are disposed in the said recesses 47. The blocks 46 and 48 are rovided for engaging the keel 50 of a boat 51. The keel 50 normally rests on the projections 49, and is disposed between the upper portions of the blocks which press against the said keel. To the blocks 48 there are secured pins 52, which are normally engaged by hooks 53, on the rods 54, journaled in the bearings 55, which are secured to the ship. An operating lever 56 is secured to the inner ends of the rods 54, by which the hooks 53 may be conveniently turned to free the pins 52 and permit the removal of the blocks 48.
. In launching a boat the blocks 48 are freed by turning the levers 56 by which movement the hooks 53 are disengaged from the pins 52 in the manner described. After this has been done the operating wheel 32 is turned until it engages the head 30, when continued rotary movement of the operating wheel 32 will rotate the shaft 29, which also causes the drums 38 to rotate, inasmuch as the drums 38 are secured to the said shaft 29. As the drums 38 are rotated, the ropes 39 will be wound on the said drums which will draw outwardly the supporting members or arms 13, thereby raising the members 21 with the tracks 22 to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings. When the members 21 have been raisedwith the tracks 22 in alinement with the tracks 18, the operating-wheel 32 may be turned in the opposite direction until it is freed fromthe head 30 and the threaded portion of the shaft 29, and the guide members 36 connect the guideways 36 and 37. By a further rotary movement of the operating wheel the drum 34 may be rotated and, at the same time, the drum, 34 is rotated to draw on the ropes 42, which pass around the pulleys 26, and as the ropes 42, are wound on the drums 34 and 34 the carriages 19 are moved outwardly to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig.
5 of the drawings. The outward movement of the carriages 19 carries the boat 51 out beyond the side of the ship. Since the boat is supported on the carriages 19, by the usual type of tackle 57, when the boat 51 has been moved out beyond the side of the ship with the carriages 19, it may be lowered by the tackle 57 in the customary manner.
It will be understood that. any number of these davits may be used in connection with each other for while I prefer to use two of these davits for each boat, it will be understood that a single davit may be used in some cases to launch a boat, while in cases where a boat is of very great length, three or more davits may be employed. However, in each case where two or more davits are used to launch a single boat, the complete device may be operated by a single operating wheel 32.- Pawls 58 are pivoted to the frame members 16 for engaging ratchet teeth 59 and 60 on the drums 38 and 34 respectively.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a davit a frame having a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, an operating wheel mounted for rotating on the shaft and having means adapted to engage means on the shaft to rotate the shaft, means on the shaft adapted to be engaged by the firstmentioned means, a drum secured to the shaft, a second drum mounted to rotate on the shaft, a clutch member on the secondmentioned drum, a clutch on the operating wheel for engaging the firstanentioned clutch, a track member, a second track member movable relatively to the first track member, a carriage for traveling on the track members, means for moving the second-mentioned track member relatively to the first-mentioned track member, a rope secured to the last-mentioned means and disposed around one drum, and a rope secured to the carriage and disposed around the other drum.
2. In a davit a member having a track, a second member having a track, hinged to the first-mentioned member, so that the second track may form a continuation of the first track when the second member is in a predetermined position relatively to the first member, a carriage for traveling on the tracks, means on the carriage for supporting a boat, a horizontal guideway, a supporting member articulated to the second member and having a guide for traveling in the guideway, a pulley journaled in the outer end of the guideway, and a rope secured to the rear of the supporting member, and disposed around the pulley for moving the supporting member outwardly to raise the sec ond-mentioned member.
3. In a davit a member having a track, a
second member having a track, hinged to the first-mentioned member, so that the second track may form a continuation of the first track when the second member is in a predetermined position relatively to the first member, a carriage for traveling on the tracks, means on the carriage for supporting a boat, a horizontal guideway, a supporting member articulated to the second member and having a guide for traveling in the guideway, a pulley journaled in the outer end of the guideway, a rope secured to the rear of the supporting member, and disposed around the pulley for moving the supporting member outwardly to raise the second-mentioned member, a pulley on the second-mentioned member, and a rope disposed around the second-mentioned pulley with the terminals secured to the carriage for moving the carriage on the tracks.
4. In a davit a frame having a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, a member mounted to rotate relatively to the shaft, two drums mounted on the shaft and adapted to rotate independently of each other, the member having means for rotating the drums, a member having a track, secured to the frame, a member having a track, hinged to the first member with the track, a carriage for traveling on the first member with the track, a carriage for traveling on the tracks, a pulley on the third member, a rope having a terminal secured to the carriage, and disposed around the pulley, the rope being connected with one of the drums, a supporting member articulated to the third member with the track, a second pulley, and a rope secured to the supporting member and disposed around the second pulley, and connected with the other drum.
5. In a davit a member having a track, a second member having a track, hinged to the first-mentioned member, a carriage for traveling on the tracks, a pulley on the second member, a rope having a terminal secured to the carriage, and disposed around the pulley, a supporting member articulated to the second member normally disposed horizontally and adapted'to move outwardly and upwardly, a second pulley, a rope secured to the supporting member, and disposed around the pulley, and means for drawing on the ropes at the will of the operator.
6. In a davit a member having a track, a second member having a track, hinged to the first-mentioned member, a carriage for traveling on the tracks, a pulley on the second member, a rope having a terminal secured to the carriage, and disposed around the pulley, a supporting member articulated to the second member, a second pulley, a rope secured to the supporting member, and disposed around the pulley, means for drawing on the ropes at the will of the operator,
a guide on the supporting member, and a horizontal guideway in which the guide is adapted to travel.
7. In a davit a frame having a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, and having a threaded portion, an operating wheel with a thread for rotating on the threaded portion of the shaft, a head member on the shaft adapted to be engaged by the operating wheel for turning therewith and rotating the shaft, a drum secured to the shaft, a second drum mounted to rotate on the shaft, a clutch member on the second drum, a clutch on the operating wheel for engaging the first clutch member to rotate the second mentioned drum, a track member, a second track member hinged to the first-mentioned track member, a carriage for traveling on the track members, means for moving the second-mentioned track member into operative position, a rope secured to the carriage, and connected with one of the drums, and a rope for operating the said track movingmeans connected with the other drum.
8. In a davit a frame having a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearing, and having a threaded portion, an operating wheel with a thread for rotating on the threaded portion of the shaft, a head member on the shaft adapted to be engaged by the operating wheel for turning therewith and rotating the shaft, a drum secured to the shaft, a second drum mounted to rotate on the shaft, a clutch member on the secondmentioned drum, a clutch on the operating wheel for engaging the first clutch to rotate the second-mentioned drum, a track member, a second track member hinged to the first-mentioned track member, a carriage for traveling on the track members, a supporting member for moving the second-mentioned track member into operative position, a guide on the supporting member, a guideway in which the guide is adapted to travel, a rope secured to the carriage, and connected with one of the drums, and a rope secured to the supporting member and connected with the other drum.

In a davit a block adapted to be secured to a ship, and having a recess spaced from its top, a second block having a projection greater in length than the depth of the re cess, the end of the projection being normally disposed in the recess, the top of the second block being spaced from the top of the first block, and means for holding the second block in position relatively to the first-mentioned block.
10.
