Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. F-GLIT, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lifeboat-Davits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to davits for supporting life boats and aims to provide improved davits, the supporting arms of which may be projected a desired distance over the side of the ship when lowering-the life boat and to provide improved operating means for bearing the boat.
The nature and object of the invention will more fully appear from the following specification read inl connection with the drawings forming part thereof in which Figure l is a side view partly in vertical section, the section being taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 3, showing davits made in accord ance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, the parts being shown in boat-lowering position;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing a boat suspended by the davits;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, the section being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a further enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates the deck of the ship on which, near its side edges, are secured a pair of rectangular brackets each consisting of a base 11, from which rise vertical side walls 12, joined at their front and back by transverse connecting walls 13. and 14. The Walls 14 being positioned toward the interior of the ship, are provided with hinged doors 15.
A pair of bell-crank levers, serving as davit arms, are pivoted upon spindles 16, mounted in the brackets, the short arms 17 of the bell-crank levers having secured at their outer ends pivoted link connections 18, the extremities of the links being en- Vgaged with nuts 19, internally screw-threaded to suit diagonally disposed screws 20, mounted in a foot bearing 21, secured upon the base 11, while the upper ends of the screws 20 are fixed inthe diagonally disposed sockets 22, of double brackets secured upon the walls 13.
in the other sockets 23 of the double bracket-s are journaled the outer ends of shafts 24, extending through the plates 14 and provided with crank handles 25, by which they may be rotated.
Fixed upon the shafts 24 are beveled gears 26, meshing with mating gears 27, secured upon the screws 20 so that the screws may be rotated, thereby moving the nuts 19 and the lower, shorter ends 17 of the bell-crank levers, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The longer, upper arms 28 of the levers have rotatably mounted in their outer ends, bars 29, having angularly turned terminals 30, carrying flexible supports 31, having forks 32 at their free ends, in which are rotatably mounted sheave pulleys 33, over which run cables 34, attached at the opposite ends of the boat 35.
From the foregoing it will be seen that upon actuating the crank handles 25, the davits may be rotated upon the spindles 16 so as to swing the boat 35 outwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, so that the boat is clear of the ship.
The cables 34 pass over other fixed sheave pulleys 36, mounted to rotate freely upon the upper ends of the lever arms 28 and then over similar pulleys 37, rotatably mounted on the lever arms 28, near their axial point 16, the cables then being extended outwardly toward the ends of the arms and pass over other pulleys 38, mounted in blocks 39, and then downward alongside the lever arms to pulleys 40, mounted in blocks 4 1, the ends of the cables being eventually secured. to hooks 42, fixed upon. the upper edges of the walls 14.
The blocks 39 and 41 are slidably mounted in ways 43, formed in the long lever arms 28, and are screw-threaded to engage with screws 44 threaded in opposite directions from their centers, the screws being mounted in bearings at their upper ends, while their lower ends extend downward past the pivotal point of the levers, where they are provided with actuating handles 45, by which the screws may be rotated to move the pulleys 38 and 40 toward or from each other to lower or raise the life boat, as will be readily' understood. 'It is to be understood the particular arrangement of the ropes and pulleys shown is merely illustrative as obviously variation may be made by one skilled in the art. Y
Center bearings 46 are provided4 for the right and left threaded screws 44, the same being fixed in the Ways 43, of the long arms 28 of the bell-crank levers, and in order to permit the boat to turn the pivoted bars 29, the pulleys 36 are mounted upon spindles 47 secured in the upper ends of the arms in slotted recesses 48, diverging angularly outward, the spindles being held in position by convex Washersl 49 secured on the spindles by the nuts 50.
In operation, When itis desired to lower the boat from the position shown in Fig. l, the crank handles are operated, swinging` the longer arms of the bell-crank levers outward beyond the side oi the ship and then the screws 44 are rotated by means Leaders of the handles 45 to bring the pulleys 38 and 40 toward each other, thus paying out the cables so that the boat is lowered, as shown in Fig. 2'.
