HOIST FOR IBOAT-LAUNGHING DEVICES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed October 20, 1915. Serial No. 56,888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnLEN E. J. LUCK- IIURST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Hoist for Boat-Launching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for launching life boats, and especially to hoists therefor, and relates more particularly to the hoist I use in raising and lowering the boats. This application describes more particularly the hoist which I use in my boat launching device, an application for patent on which I have executed this day preparatory to filing the same in the Patent Office of the United States.
The object of this invention is to provide a hoist which can be operated eiiiciently from a safe position on the ship, and one with which the life boats can be quickly raised and lowered.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a plan view of a portion of the deck of a ship and of a boat launching device with my improved hoist forming a part thereof; Fig. 2, is an elevation of one of the davits with my boat launching device applied thereto,-my hoist forming a part thereof; Fig. 3, is a plan view, on an enlarged scale, with a part broken away, of my improved hoist; and, Fig. 4, is a sectional elevation thereof, on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, like numerals of reference refer to the same parts in each of the views.
In practice I provide a boat launching device in which the davits 6, carry the falls 7 from which the operative rope 8, may be rove through an eyelet 9, on the davit, and through another eyelet 10, on the deck of the ship whereby the rope may be guided to the hoist 11, which I will now describe in detail.
A suitable base 12, is provided, which is secured to the deck of the ship within the line of the life boats so that any one operating the same will never be exposed to danger of being hurled overboard. In this base is mounted two shafts, 13, and 14, on the ends of each of which, outside the base, are
drum ends 15, whereby there are a pair of drum ends in operative relation to each other at each side of the hoist. Mounted on the shaft 13, is a worm gear. 16, and on the shaft 14, a worm gear 17 and these are so positioned relative to each other that both mesh with a worm 18, mounted on a shaft 19, which projects upwardly and backwardly from the side of the ship so that it may be operated with a crank 20, without exposing the operator to the danger of falling overboard.
By the construction of gearing just described both pair of drum ends are operated simultaneously with the single crank 20; and the hoist is so positioned that the adjacent ends of two life boats 21, may be raised simultaneously, as will be understood.
In operation both pair of drum ends 15, are rotated by the worm 18 through the shaft 19, and crank 20, so that a rope 8, from the falls on the adjacent davits may be clamped upon the respective drum ends and the falls operated thereby. It is evi dent, too, that although both pair of drum ends are operated simultaneously, a rope 8, need be brought into operative relation with only one pair whereby but a single life boat will be moved.
The hoist is so constructed that it can be operated easily and quickly; and two boats can be raised as quickly as one by operating a single crank, and that from a point of safety.
I claim:
The combination with a boat launching device having mechanical means for rotat ing eachdavit located inwardly from the sides of the ship whereby each davit may be rotated without danger of the operator being lurched, or washed overboard, of a hoist located inwardly from the davit-operating-means, said hoist having two pair of drum ends and an inclined operating shaft extending upwardly and rearwardly,
and having gearing connected with said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
